Pretty impressive performance that - especially the 2nd half. Those second string players did perform a lot better. Lucas passed the ball really well, took a good free kick too! Babel looked good on the right (though he and Ngog gave the ball away far too often). Keane worked his socks off, very Gerrard-esque pass for Ngog's goal. Dossena looked a different player.

Very glad to see Darby et al come on too - having followed them from the Youth Cup to the Reserves, was good to see them in the first team, and not look out of place :(

Oh, and now we've finished top, we're destined to face Inter.

Just been reading Skysports.com and apparently Milan have confirmed their interest in Daniel Agger. Apparently they would be looking to pay 6.6mil for him!

Firstly, I think Liverpool would be extremely stupid to let him go as I think he is potentially our best centre back for the next 10 years and secondly he surely would be worth much more than that even if we did!

Also, what constitutes 'tapping up' these days as surely telling the media "we are interested in this player" is surely used to unsettle the player they are interested in?

Please Rafa don't let go of Agger in January. ;)

Now I know we didn't cover ourselves in glory over the whole Barry saga - but why do managers keep mentioning our players to the press, and we do nothing about it?

From recent memory: Crouch, Alonso, Agger, Gerrard (although it's all the time), Benayoun, Pennant and more have all had comments about them.

Plus £6.6m is an absolute joke. We paid £5.5m for him, and I wouldn't even let him go for £15m. He and Skrtel are going to be our central pairing for years to come.

We could confirm our interest in Kaka and say we're looking to pay £8m for him but it doesn't really mean anything does it?

True. I think we should do it. And while we're at it, say we're interested in Messi, but only looking to pay 5p and a Curly Wurly.

Alonso is Premier League's pass master

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso came very close to leaving the club in the summer but his determination to stay and fight for his place could in fact be the very reason that The Reds are sitting top of The Premier League.

Alonso was the guiding light in Liverpool's 3-1 win at Blackburn last weekend and in that game he became the first Premier League player this season to complete more than 1,000 passes.

Player Surname Team Successful Passes Accuracy Chances Created

Xabi Alonso Liverpool 1005 85.17% 26

Mikel Chelsea 957 90.88% 12

Denilson Arsenal 922 86.74% 27

Lampard Chelsea 901 85.24% 48

Fabregas Arsenal 848 81.07% 45

Greening WBA 799 89.78% 33

Terry Chelsea 792 91.03% 3

Deco Chelsea 785 81.01% 30

Bullard Fulham 784 81.50% 37

Clichy Arsenal 718 83.49% 20

As the table above shows, Alonso is the only Liverpool player in the top 10, an indication of just how important he has been to Rafa Benitez's team in 2008-09.

Chelsea's passing game under Luiz Felipe Scolari means they have four players in the top 10 while Arsenal have three.

Alonso may have created fewer goalscoring chances than many of the players on this list, including Fulham's Jimmy Bullard and West Brom's Jonathan Greening, but Liverpool have struggled in his absence this season and it's clear that if The Reds are to maintain their title challenge in the New Year then their Basque midfield general will be an integral cog in the machine.

Manchester United, who have played a game less, do not have a representative in the top 10.

I thought this was pretty impressive really. Even more so when you consider that he plays deeper than the others bar Mikel, his lack of involvement in set-pieces, as well as the frequency with which he plays those incisive long balls.

Um, I was expressing my admiration for Liverpool Football Club's midfielder Xabi Alonso. And I made a small joke about him being too good for Liverpool Football Club.

I'll make sure I write in really long sentences and explain everything very clearly in the future.

You couple of weirdos.

Or you could just fuck off, how about that?

Boy, boys, boys. A slight over-reaction perhaps. Can we move along?

In other news, Rafa has hit out at tabloid stories (from that rag) that he has conceded the title.

A tabloid newspaper this morning ran the headline 'We won't win the title - Rafa'.

The story suggested Benitez had ruled out winning the league because Chelsea, United and Arsenal would not slip up.

But the boss told his weekly press conference: "We are really pleased because we are top and I can guarantee that if we are still top of the table after Christmas we will have a clear chance of winning the title.

"It was an interview with a French journalist and we were talking about tactics. I was really surprised with the story but everyone in Liverpool knows about this newspaper.

"We are at the top of the table because we are doing things better than the others. It is up to us and that is it.

"The players have confidence. Some people say we didn't play well at Blackburn but we had plenty of possession. We had control and opportunities. Against PSV it was the same. The second half was really good with different players, so the squad has confidence and the team has confidence.

"Hull on Saturday will be difficult but if we win we'll have more confidence - and it's the same with all the games.

"We scored three against Blackburn, three against PSV - hopefully if we score goals tomorrow everyone will be happy and saying we can win the league."

Asked if Liverpool had enough experience to win the title, Benitez responded: "The staff here have a lot of experience. Mauricio Pellegrino has won a lot of titles, Sammy Lee has won a lot and me too. We have experience and some of the players do too."

Hull visit Anfield on Saturday sitting in sixth place in the Barclays Premier League having beaten the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal away.

Benitez knows it won't be a walk in the park.

"Geovanni is scoring goals and Marlon King is doing a good job up front, but the team has a good mentality and that's the key," he said.

"Hull have a very good offensive mentality, they're scoring goals. They have won against Arsenal and Tottenham. We know it will be tough, but that's the Premier League. From watching their games, I can understand why they're doing well, so we have to be careful.

"We are doing well at home. Clearly the last two games could have been better, but we can win at home."

Meanwhile, Benitez revealed Fernando Torres was nearing a comeback from his latest hamstring injury - but refused to confirm when the striker would return.

He said: "I was talking with him today and he was much better. We did not talk about how long he'd be out but he's feeling good, a little bit tired because he's been working hard, but good. It could be one or two weeks - but I don't want to put a time on it."

El Nino was today named on the five-man shortlist for FIFA World Player of the Year alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi, Lionel Messi and Kaka.

For Benitez, Torres should be the one claiming the prize on January 12.

"It's very positive for him and also for us because it means he was doing well," said the boss. "Hopefully he will have a chance because 33 goals and the winning goal in Euro 2008 is really good. I think he's done enough to win it."

He was very scathing in today's press conference too. Good on you, Rafa.

Yeah, Das, what the fuck? I have to say I like your zero tolerance policy when dealing with trolls but Nate falls nowhere near that category.

We are top of the league and have no reason to moan and whinge. Due to have nothing to bitch about we are going to gang up on opposition fans and hound them out of this thread instead. :)

Or Babel requesting a loan, even though up until the PSV game he'd hardly done himself justice when he did play.

Or Torres being out and us lacking in the goals department with the other strikers.

Or the fact the Americans are somehow *still* here, and we're no closer to a new stadium or new contracts for the likes of Kuyt and Agger.

See - there's loads to moan about! :P

The Liverpool team in full: Reina, Dossena, Hyypia, Carragher, Arbeloa, Riera, Alonso, Mascherano, Benayoun, Gerrard, Kuyt.

Subs: Cavalieri, Agger, Keane, Babel, Lucas, Ngog, El Zhar.

Bit odd there's no Keane, but oh well, I've given up predicting what Rafa will do :P

Isn't it pretty much the same team that beat Blackburn?

EDIT: Yeah its the same apart from Dossena in for Insua and Reira in for Babel. I don't think Kuyt up on his own worked very well to be honest. We got the three points though so would be happy with the same!
