While I agree that Xabi has indeed been fantastic and our best player so far this season, I'd just like to add that Mascherano's presence is a big part of what affords Xabi so much space. Opposition players haven't been able to drop in on him or double up like they used to because Masch is playing further ahead of him now, freeing Xabi up somewhat. Alonso's vision is unparalleled and takes their partnership to another level.

I'm really looking forward to, in theory, a 4-4-2 this weekend with Alonso / Mascherano / Riera and Kuyt in midfield & Torres and Keane up front. No disrespect to Gerrard of course but I'm optimistic that we can give Fulham a footballing lesson with the above all on the pitch in a 4-4-2.

So am I.

There's a problem coming up in where Gerrard plays with all of them fit and who he replaces. However, there's no need to rush him back and when he's ready he can take the place of any of Masch, Xabi or Keane. A good 'problem' to have.

That's why I think, when everyone's fit, we could go (in some matches):

----------Reina

---Carra Agger Skrtel

Kuyt Alonso Masch Riera

--------Gerrard

-----Torres Keane

It's something I've pondered for a while but it would entail Dirk and Riera playing very deep. I think it's far more likely that depending on the tactics on the day, we'll see Stevie playing in place of one of Keane, Masch or Xabi.

Not necessarily. I think whichever wing back (Kuyt or Riera) was pushing on, the back three and the other wing back shuffle round to a line of four.

I admit, I'm not mad keen on three centre backs, but it may have a place as an option for Rafa.

Which would then force us to push two central players wide or lose all balance. It can work, and has under Rafa in the past, but I doubt we'll see it with Kuyt and Riera both on the pitch. I've seen Riera play as a wing back and the thought of him being asked to do it for us doesn't fill me with confidence.

What side do you lads reckon Rafa will put out against Fulham on Saturday? For argument's sake let's say Gerrard is out but Keane will recover in time.

I'd like to see a midfield of:

Kuyt--xabi--Masch--Riera

The only problem being all four have played quite a bit already this season and all four played 90 minutes for their respective countries on Wednesday.

Kuyt can run forever. He's like a faithful hound, and has the barnet to match. I can just imagine him panting wildy after another 60 yard dash, all to retrieve a stick.

:(

Well, yeah, Kuyt's different and will rarely ever need a rest. I think they should all be OK to play but I do wonder if Rafa is considering playing Babel or Lucas in place of one of them. If Keane doesn't make it back I could see him sticking Dirk upfront and bringing in Benayoun. That or playing Babel there, I suppose.

Anyone else still cheesed off with the 'Liverpool's title challenge looks further and further away' line that keeps getting trotted out after games like this? Same thing happened on the Carling Cup night; never mind how poorly Chelsea and Man Utd. did against teams from lower divisions, Liverpool losing to a fairly decent side is an atrocity! These pundits need a case of 'fuck off'. Twats.

You're easy targets and the press love easy targets, welcome to our world.

You got Harry Redknapp now, so that cancels that out.

It is mystifying, though. Usual suspects pull out for England game (Rio and Rooney, namely), no questions from Capello and Rooney plays yesserday. Gerrard did the same and Capello got curious. Wouldn't surprise me if there was some media involvement with that </conspiracy>. :(

Welcome to your world?

We've always had it, ever since our days of domination - all of the current pundits grew up or played in a time where we won everything and they despise us for it and love it when we falter.

Michael Ballack quote

"Liverpool are very good at this moment but for me they are always a club for the Champions League, partly because they can put all their focus on one or two matches.

So Ballack has written us off as a team that will forever be only able to contend in the Champions League?! WTF is this toss pot on about?! Presumably his team are only a club for the premiership then as they've never won a European Cup?!

What a complete weirdo.

Oh and he also mentioned it was a two horse race for the title only! (Man U and Chelsea) :(

In all fairness neither of them played against stoke the weekend before while Gerrard played the full 90 running up and down the pitch as usual.
