Wonder if there'll be any Chelsea fans saying "Oh well done, thats your Cup Final"

Nah, it'll all be about the deflected goal, conveniently forgetting the many they have scored over the last few seasons.

In a way, I'm almost happier that it was deflected - makes the victory more satisfying, strangely.

You guys must be used to a really bad standard of football over the last 18 years of not winning the premiership, I thought your teams passing was average at best.

It might have looked that way because Chelsea were closing us down pretty intensively for pretty much the full 90 minutes. But we did pretty well.

And we've won a couple of other little titles in this 18 years you might have heard of, we're used to a pretty high standard thanks

Really bad standard? Oh do fuck off. We've had a very decent amount of trophies in the time, and bad teams don't win trophies. Considered we were at Chelsea (one of the strongest teams in the league), I don't think we could have done loads better.

I'm over the moon with the result today. We are finally proving we are title contenders. Thats 2 of the 6 games against the other top teams we've won and the fact it was at Stamford Bridge makes it even more of a great victory.

How fucking good was Carragher? Immense performance although we where not exactly battered at any stage.

As for earlier discussions in the week. Babel's a forward / a second striker. Today is further proof of that.

Carra was brilliant. As for Babel, to say that he is a forward/second striker would imply that he would be wasted playing wide which simply isn't the case. As I've said before, I think he'll play centrally with increasing frequency as he matures but Rafa will still play him on the left or right because he's effective out there.

Lies. We made some very nice passing moves today and over complicated it a couple of times when space opened up for a midfielder to strike the ball. Don't forget where we were playing and what that game meant for the two teams involved. Obviously they had more of the ball but I thought we used it well and were unlucky not to score another.

I had a little chuckle at Ashley Cole's miss. I'm glad we've got Alan Hansen to reveal the subtleties of Benitez' "genius" "master plan". I don't know much about football, so I hope it's not going to go over my head. Here it comes. I hope you're all taking notes. "Two lines of four". Thanks Alan.

Although let's not forget Man City were in a similar position this time last season (if I remember right?) and it didn't last long.

Would love to see Hull fighting it out in the top 5 for the rest of the season though!

He's wasted out wide in a midfield four though. In a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 he looks much happier coming in from wider positions. Anytime he's not asked to track back and do the defensive part of his game he looks a far better player. I'm still slightly baffled as to why he's never been fit enough to play full matches in his time at Liverpool FC. All that off field rapping must be exhausting?!?

The footy thread itself is full of Spurs and rightly so, so this might as well go in here.

For the first time in the Abramovich era I have absolutely no complaints about losing to Liverpool.

Yes, the goal was a lucky one, and it could so easily have been a draw like so may of the others, but you lot won pretty much every battle, won every header, were first to every loose ball, pressed better, passed better, played better.

I think our Middlesbrough win was a bit of a smokescreen for the press who took it as meaning that we could survive without so many big players; the truth being that, yes, against an abject Boro side that showed no interest in getting the ball, the likes of Malouda and Kalou can look pretty strong. Put them up against a team of greater discipline, strength and ability and they're shown up. The few times Anelka tried to back into Carragher I laughed. He's no Drogba. He's barely even a Kezman actually.

So, well done! You deserve to be taken seriously which must feel great. Long way to go yet of course and there's a niggle in the back of my mind that tells me to fear United more than you over the course of the season but who knows? You're in a far better position eight weeks into the season than you have been in yonks, you've beaten most people's favourites for the title already (both of them)....

God I hate being magnanimous. You're all cunts, etc.

We're on the same page, mostly. I'ver said the same regarding him paying in a four in the past, he needs to be allowed to play high up the pitch in order to get the best out of him. He can still do a job in a four but he's much, much better playing in support of a striker, whether that be wide on either side or centrally.

Good man. I'm not getting carried away just yet because as you say, there's still a long time to go. I'm obviously happy with our start to the season and I do feel that although it's too early to talk about winning it, we have shown that we have the quality to challenge now.
