I would rather obviously say Scholes was better than either of them in his prime, but they're different styles of players so it's hardly a valid comparison.

Its not a valid comparison but to say rather obviously is a lovely biased Man U view. For a start, people must have short memories as Scholes was playing terribly in his last few games for England before he retired. he also scored 14 goals in 66games which isn't a massive achievement in my book for an attacking midfielder (when in his prime).

Like you said though, not a valid comparison just a bloody stupid one!

ALTHOUGH.......Gerrard has only hit 13 goals in 68 appearances......but he has barely been played in his right role!

I'll shut up now!

Not sure how you can accurately appraise Scholes in an England shirt as he spent the latter part of his international career riven with neck-knack from looking up at all those long balls sailing over his head.

Fantastic player though.

And I personally welcome the Gerrard-crit because it's obviously his year, nice to see the heat taken off Frank for a bit. Sorry!

Excellent new from UEFA: with one week until the game, the Athletico Madrid game has been moved to a ground over 300KMs away from Madrid because of the trouble at Marseille. Utter fucking useless cretins, shitting on the fans who've already made travel arrangements. And they notably have only done it after a French team got shit on! Way to go, you stupid cunts.

Once again Torres goes away for international duty fit and healthy, and comes back facing a lay-off which includes a game against one of the 'Big Four'. Getting fucking sick of saying this but I despise international breaks. Babel's injured too. :)

I read that this morning too and thought, "here we fucking go again". It's always bloody the best players that get injured for us on international duty.

Hopefully it'll be just the Wigan match he misses. Robbie scored for Ireland again so hopefully he'll transfer that form over to Liverpool on saturday.

You're right, we should be beating them with or without Torres. I am wary of the threat they pose, though, as Bruce's teams always trouble us and they've been performing very well this season. The main concern for me is that Torres had just found some form after struggling for a bit due to injury and now he's out again. I was expecting Babel to feature too, certainly against Atletico.

Does anyone see the funny side regarding Heskey being the best creative target man in the prem? Im glad we got crouch, only to ship him out!

Uefa has temporarily lifted Atletico Madrid's two-match home stadium ban for the Champions League match against Liverpool on 22 October.

European football's governing body had ordered Atletico to play their next two matches away from the Vicente Calderon Stadium after crowd trouble.

That meant the Liverpool game would have been held at a neutral venue at least 200 miles from Madrid.

But the decision has been overturned after an appeal by Atletico.

What do we think about this then...

That'd actually be pretty cool I think, but then I always was a fan of what he brought to the team.

It's been rumoured for a while and I really don't want to see it happening. Torres and Keane are obviously first choice, backed up by Babel and Kuyt. Beyond that Ngog looks ok, surely Nemeth has to be given a go at some stage , not to mention that Pacheco is obviously gifted and can't sit at reserve level forever. Ecclestone also bangs them in for the U18's. It's time we started to bring players through from within.

Whilst I agree with the potential of the players outlined above; I don't think they are ready for first team responsibility. I'd love to see them in the squad and used as subs etc, but am a little concerned about the niggling injuries Torres and Babel keep on picking up. I still wouldn't be surprised to see Kuyt sold in January, whether Benitez wants it or not, and Heskey could be seen as a budget replacement considering his age and contract status. I stress, Heskey isn't really needed if our squad remains fit, and isn't tinkered with to pay off debts, but I remain suspicious as to whether that will be the case. Having said that, nobody would be happier than me if Ngog, Babel or Nemeth came in and started scoring or linking with Torres/Keane.

I remember seeing stories about it back in the summer. I think he'd be a good squad player and also give us a different tactical option to try when Rafa wants it. He's been performing well of late and wouldn't be bad to have on the bench as an option for most games. Especially now that we have 7 subs. He would be handy to have around for times like these as well where the likes of Torres and Babel are out injured. He's professional and wouldn't moan about only playing a squad role, and I think he'd improve the squad. Obviously he's not a prolific scorer but he does offer a different kind of threat and his strike partners always flourish. I think he'd be a good signing, personally.

Although, and this isn't to go against my opinion above, or yours dogsout, is it true that he would be happy as a squad player? Thinking about it, considering his increased prominence in the England team as a regular starter for Wigan, he probably wouldn't want to move to the bench, especially with the way Owen has been shunned for not playing/scoring regularly enough. I think the Kuyt sale side is more in keeping with the way the club is being run, and if he were to be shifted, then I would be pretty pleased with cash in the bank and Heskey. Having said that, though, the silly money slapped on England players could scupper any potential move, even with the end of contract next season.

Torres could forever be hampered by this problem. Seems to be a not uncommon problem in players with rapid acceleration. As for Babel, Gamst Pedersen's 'challenge' was ridiculous and it seemed fairly malicious from watching the replays. I don't see this Heskey story having any mileage in it whatsoever. We just don't need anymore forwards and I would think the continued links with Dortmund's Polish right winger are a bit more credible.

Could this be like the time I said "ROBBIE FOWLER IS COMING BACK"...and he did. :D

That turned out well! :D

I think he would be. He's coming toward the final stage of his career and would surely like to win some trophies before he retires.

I would hate to see Kuyt sold now. He's fixed a problem position for us this season and has been one of our best performers so far this season. It would be crazy to sell him in January and although I wouldn't put it past the yanks, I don't think Rafa would consider it.

Ummm, Pennant starts today for some reason. It's no secret Benitez wanted to sell him and Jermaine wanted to stay. Now is surely the time to do something with his game. Floaty crosses and cutting back behind himself all the time doesn't count.

This (from the Echo) is worrying:

Meanwhile, Liverpool are not about to launch a bid for Emile Heskey, despite speculation that the Wigan man is a target for Rafa Benitez.

The Reds boss is a long-time admirer of the 30-year-old striker but the signing of Albert Riera took Liverpool's transfer budget into the red and outgoing transfers are much more likely than incomings in the current financial climate.

Benitez had tried to balance the books by selling Jermaine Pennant to Blackburn but that was scuppered when the winger declined the move.

So unless there is a cash injection from club owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett the chances of Liverpool signing players – even on free transfers – are remote.

As does this:

The Reds XI in full is: Reina, Arbeloa, Dossena, Agger, Carragher, Riera, Pennant, Alonso, Gerrard, Kuyt, Keane. Subs: Cavalieri, Hyypia, Insua, Benayoun, Ngog, Lucas, El Zhar.

:)

You can see the injuries taking their toll on the bench. Hope El Zhar gets on though, he's looked good so far.
