was weird as a utd fan who grew up in the 70s/80s with liverpool dominant to see the players and fans of that once mighty club celebrating so much like they had won the league after beating utd!!

Made you guys look like the west hams, blackburns, newcastles etc who, as has been pointed out above, only usually have the odd victory over utd as the highlight of their season

They, along with Everton, have been our greatest rivals. They are league champions and European Cup champions too. We started without our two best players and comfortably beat them, completely dominating the second half. Despite beating them regularly (five times on the trot) during the Houllier era, we had not beat them in the league under Benitez despite dominating games, so I think we're entitled to celebrate.

And it was the highlight of our season... so far.

I was referring to the fact that beating United is the highlight of your season, your cup final, if you will.

You are talking about a team that has won the Champions League, been in a Champions League final, won the FA Cup, lost in a League Cup Final, all in the past four years! You are trolling.

You are trolling.

You're hurting the kettle's feelings with that, Vezna.

Anyway I love it when United fans trot out the 'your cup final' line, you really don't hear it from any other fans and it's such a weak insurance against losing any game. It hits home when Boro and Citeh get the DVD up in the Megastore by Monday lunchtime but against your most hated rivals, who haven't beaten you under their current manager, who crave the Premier League and just beat the champions convincingly...it's laughable.

Not the whole game. Only 87minutes of it.

As for the claimed overzealous celebrations - come on, we haven't beaten you in years. Years!

It was one of the first bitter comments I heard at the final whistle on Saturday (after not being able to contain my delight when the winning goal was scored in a pub full of Man United fans): "Acting like they've won the league".

No, none of that. And, no, there won't be a DVD released today (like Everton do when they beat us).

Even though a lot of the excitement stemmed from the fact that people just forgot what it felt like to beat you in the league it was also a release of pent-up frustration from our last few encounters.

Come back when you've got a few more Champions League trophies.

I had to respond to some of the crap spouted previously in the Chelsea thread. If that constitutes trolling then yes, I'm guilty.

Chelsea have my full support for Sunday though. Obviously a draw would be ideal but barring that I'll cheer on Chelsea. Lesser of two evils I suppose! :(

I don't like the subtitle though Disciple, it has to be said. Having that is only going to incite idiots like poppalarge and is a bit pathetic. Unless you're gonna keep it up and update our latest result every week!

What the thread subtitle on this thread? I didn't create this thread you'll note, I can't change it?

The Daily Post are saying we might experiment with 3-5-2 tonight. Which I'm guessing would mean:

--------------Reina

-------Carra Agger Skrtel

Arbeloa-----------------Dossena

----------Masch Alonso

-------------Gerrard

----------Keane Torres

As much as I'd love to see Riera and Babel replace Dossena and Arbeloa in that formation (and playing slightly higher up the pitch), I can't see it happening.

40-1, stuck down £10. Do you want to know my secret?

That's right! The last game of FMLive I played, I lost 4-0. So I thought that would be the result tonight.

I know, I know, I'm genius.

Thing is I did it as a last minute thing. I had no idea why. Guessed my William Hill account password, put in a new card, whacked in £10, and got the bet on seconds before kick off.

Then I went off to Sportingbet, whacked down £10 on a goal between 41-50...and happy days!!

Remember this?! Do I put a bet on tonight? :)

Babel is an absolute legend, has been one of my favourite players since he arrived. He's doing a lot of damage as supersub at the moment. I wonder if Rafa should start to move him away from that role. He can really burn defenders.

When he stuck in that 4th last year I was jumping about the living room like a nutface.

Then Gerrard almost scored and I was screaming at him to miss it. He duly obliged. Phew!

I see Rafa has been getting a bit of stick from some of our fans where Babel is concerned. I think his handling of Ryan has been brilliant and can't understand why some people are getting on his back about it. Anyone that saw anything of him before he came to England knew he was talented but still very raw, I made several posts in here to that effect before we signed him. In particular, it was clear that he had displayed problems with his fitness and consistency. I'm pleased with the way Rafa has gently eased him into life in the Premier League without putting too much pressure on him, but still managing to get important goals out of him in the process, whilst also improving his fitness and hopefully, in time, consistency levels.

We have great competition for places in most of the positions now. Our left side looks very, very strong now and thanks to Babel's versatility, so does our right side. I'm sure Babel will feature more as the season progresses but in the mean time I have confidence in Rafa's ability to keep him improving and contributing, even if it's predominantly from the bench for the first few months.

In a similar way Wenger seems to have handled Walcott very well has he not? Although WC is clearly younger and needed to be protected a lot more.

Yes and I made a very similar post regarding Walcott in the Arsenal thread ages back when loads of them were saying he was a flop.

We Arsenal fans never thought he was a flop, we had complete faith in Wenger and Walcott all along. We knew Theo would come good.

I know you're joking but IIRC there was a time when it was basically only hercules sticking up for him and calling for patience.

I found that post I was talking about:

To be honest I think the majority of people that are saying that hadn't seen much of him before we signed him and expected big things from him this season. He has spent most of his career playing as one of a front three. He's playing deeper for us than he ever has in the past, he's settling into a notoriously difficult league to adapt to and as I said in this very thread when you were first linked with him: He's full of potential but still quite raw. He's never been the most consistent performer either. He's only young and I fully expect Rafa to iron out most of his flaws and to see him terrorising defences and taking the piss out of players on a regular basis in a couple of seasons.

I think too many football fans are guilty of a 'I want it all and I want it now' attitude and I do wonder just what it is that people base their opinions on sometimes because all too often it seems like assumption, rather than considered opinion. Anybody that had watched Ryan Babel play a decent amount of games before he came to England would have known what to expect from him this year. For what it's worth: I'm quite pleased with the way he's settling in and I'm happy with his contribution so far.

I also think that some of that can be applied to Walcott. He is talented enough to succeed at Arsenal, of that I'm sure. Whether he will or not will depend on his character and the patience of the people that matter; Wenger, his team mates and to a lesser extent, the fans. If they're constantly on his back and groaning every time he does something daft or tries something that doesn't come off it'll make things so much more difficult for him. While I don't think playing him on the wing has done anything for his confidence in the short term, it will be teaching him things he maybe wouldn't appreciate while playing upfront. How to make space for himself against top defenders and the importance of doing his part defensively. It is likely to improve his game in the end, you all just have to be patient and wait for him to mature into the player Wenger thinks he can become; it won't happen overnight.
