Great performance, fantastic play from alonso, controlled the whole game. I think Riera could be a big player for us, I've gotten so used to seeing our wide players running inside as soon as they can, refreshing to see someone who stays out there.

Riera turned a few of the Utd players inside out. The fact we've actually got a winger is a plus point. Benitez has so many options now beyond not having an out and out right winger (no, Pennant doesn't count).

The main negative for me was Kuyt. The guy gets into good positions and works his heart out but isnt good enough to be in our team imo. Had a few very good chances, lost the ball and even the pass to Babel for the goal was scuffed, he seems to make the ball bobble for a lot of his passes.

Kuyt is a mystery.

He sets up the second goal superbly and yet other times he does waste possession. Or has an awful touch. Towards the end of the game today Alonso played a wonderful ball out to him and he misses his touch which leads to us losing out on a chance to get in.

Sure it turned out alright because we kept possession - but Kuyt does seem to do a lot wrong and then pop up with a goal or a great moment.

If he could be consistent he'd be a storming player...although I guess it might be difficult for him now playing as a Winger of sorts?

Andy Gray

A fight nearly kicked off in our local pub between two middle aged locals over him! All the Liverpool fans misheard him say 'Liverpool don't deserve to be in the lead' when *I think* he said something along the lines of "Even the most staunch Manchester United fan can't say Liverpool don't deserve to be in the lead".

To be fair its always between the same two every time we play, but if they actually stepped back and saw they were defending/arguing over Andy Gray (no matter how right he was), they may have calmed down a bit!

Still though, great win - it's taken us long enough! Lets just hope we don't get ahead of ourselves, this result at Anfield should be par for the course every season IMO. As much as United were poor, we looked really good though - positive and good, attacking football played at times. The fact there was no/very little Gerrard or Torres is a great icing on this football shaped cake.

Yes, I'm pretty sure he said the latter

Looks like I picked the wrong week to have Wes Brown as my Fantasy Football captain *and* have my Footy Predictions banker on Newcastle beating Hull. Still with those results, it's win-win.

Thought Riera was superb. Lots of neat passing and good control. Him and Aurelio linked up very well, I thought. Here's hoping Fabio can stay fit.

Aurelio's a funny chap. Just seems to get on with it, no fuss. Usually puts in the effort, but often unremarkable. Today he was great, and agreed re: Riera - maybe they'll spark each other off.

Aurelio's a top class leftback when fit. Pity that's once every 3 months at most.

Andy Gray's commentary today was spot on. He just did his job properly for a change. Setanta's Craig Burley seems to have got his shit together this season as well.

I like Aurelio, he's a fantastic ball player. But, as you say, his fitness is the problem. If the guy had a bit more pace he'd be a monster.

Ahhhh, that was so, so sweet. After traipsing out of Anfield for the past few seasons having seen us sucker-punched by that shower, today the ground was absolute buzzing post-match.

After the wobbly start, when I'm sure I wasn't alone in wondering if it was going to be another case of same old, same old, Xabi got his foot on the ball and we were largely superb. Not sure how much his influence came across on the tele, but thought he was immense today, along with the Monster, who looked like he had his Weetabix then carried on and ate the factory. The man is fearsome in that kind of form, so glad he's our's because he must be a right bastard to play against. Riera was also a very nice surprise. He looked like a veteran of the fixture adding effective flair, with a swagger in his step. Very early days in his Liverpool career of course but all his debut was missing was a goal.

So pleasing to see the lads looking hungry and determined and getting their rewards. Yeah there are still a few creases to iron out but even Slur recognised we were brilliant today, and it's about fecking time.

The summer long pursuit of Barry and the length of time it took to sign Riera is even more puzzling now looking at yesterdays match. No disrespect to Barry of course as he's a fine footballer but why Rafa wanted him is still confusing.

Yeah, as tbb says you were by far the better team, congrats. United nearly always lose when teams put constant pressure on us like you guys did, not sure about Riera though, Babel looked a lot better for the short time he was on. I think Riera was primarily helped by Aurelio getting forward which he hasn't really done so far this season.

I still reckon you need a Barry-esque player to win the league, especially if you go a long way in the CL. Obviously on current form I could well be wrong!

I think he would have still preferred Barry as he is more versatile but had to settle for the second option. But, Alonso has been one of our better peformers so far and if Riera can give us the width he did yesterday (although Phresh is right in that Aurelio was a big help with that) then it's not too bad a plan b to be going on with.

0-0 Vs Stoke next week?

Missed most of the game yesterday (golf:( ) but managed to see about 10mins while having a beer before my tee time was up. From what I saw we were harrassing and chasing and not given united anytime on the ball. Its the first time United have lost to us in ages so perhaps I should miss the game and play golf when we meet them at Old Trafford! :)

Fantastic result and I think although we still aren't playing amazingly this type of result coupled with more of the hard fought wins we had against Boro and Sunderland this could be a very interesting year indeed :)

We haven't played well this season until about 13.01 yesterday afternoon, but we were really good for most of the game yesterday. Not getting carried away because I know we won't play with that hunger and drive week in, week out (and we've turned so many corners over the years our path resembles the work of Escher), but certainly going to enjoy what turned out to be a fantastic team performance.

There was something in the air yesterday, to a man Anfield willed the side on, even after the early setback, and maybe that something that's been missing recently too. Wasn't quite a classic European noise but definitely much better than the drowsy atmospheres lunchtime kick-offs often seem to prompt.

And please play golf again for all our games this season :)
