Well that was... just like the other night. Need to be a lot better in the second half.

Our lack of a left footer on the left is telling - Benayoun keeps needing to cut inside.

Would've been a lovely goal by Keane just near the end.

Why is Hyypia playing instead of Agger and Plessis instead of Alonso? :lol:

Alonso not starting probably confirms the story he wants to leave :D and apparently Agger isn't quite there yet in terms of fitness.

It has been a pretty poor half really with us creating absolutely nothing of note although we should have had a penalty probably.

Lets hope we see more next half.

Not just Agger but why no Skrtel? :D

Alonso's carrying a slight knock - should figure 2nd half though (EDIT: Yep, he's on now).

Surprised no one's mentioned the penalty we should've had, then the blatant encroachment from the freekick directly after.

He's only just come back from injury too, so just protecting him.

Well after that performance from Alonso, there's no way we can sell him now surely? He'd get my man of the match. And Benitez did just confirm Alonso had a dead leg, which is why he didn't start - so maybe a glimmer of hope there.

Kuyt and Benayoun showed today exactly why I've been banging on all summer about needing more quality in their positions. I can't believe he kept Kuyt on and took Keane off, he really wasn't having the best of games. I mean he was working hard as usual, but there were no crosses into the box. They're both good squad players, but I really hope we're not relying on them too much this season.

Yep, only 45 minutes played and Alonso did actually win man of the match. Nearly scoring from his own half again as well.

Benayoun and Kuyt are still offering little despite seeing plenty of the ball. Kuyt not taking on that shot and passing to Alonso was bizarre. It's as if he's not allowed to shoot. :lol:

He's obviously completely lost his confidence for shooting now.

Thank god Holland got knocked out the Olympics - Babel should be back for the next game. Having said that, he's not exactly left footed either.

Ideally, before August is up we'll have signed Barry to appease Benitez and got in someone else to play on the left. I can't see either happening now though.

Thought it was a good win for the boys on saturday. We may not have played particularly well, we may not have looked like title contenders but getting a win from an away game in any situation is exactly what we have been missing for the last few years. Torres scoring away from home (apparently some opposition fans think its worth commenting he didn't do enough of that last year to be known as world class) and winning with a depleted side signs is good signs for the season ahead. Good to see Xabi played a blinder and i really wish he sticks with us for the season. Bring on disposing of Leige next week I say :(

Lucas just shown a straight Red for a tackle on Masch at the Olympics!

EDIT: And now Neves sent off for a tackle on Masch. He's up and running about OK though.

On the good side of things - Lucas is banned from the 3rd/4th place play-off and can come straight back.

Apparently we've turned down a 2.5m bid for Hyppia from Stoke, as much as I like the guy that strikes me as good business considering his age

I think we'll need to use Carragher at rightback more than a few times and with Hyppia's departure this would leave no back up for Agger & Skrtel in the middle.
