And as I read elsewhere on the intertubes, if preseason were a good indicator of the actual season then Spurs would have won the lot by now.

Looking at supposed experts pre season previews Spurs are going to storm the top four. I await this revelation with baited breath.

I think spurs have 5th sewn up. While I think they have the potential to be top four it depends on their ability to defend.

Unless Spurs make a couple of more signings I'm sure Villa have fifth nailed. Arsenal are still an unknown quantity though due to apparent glaring lack of squad depth.

Hard to say really - how can you reasonably expect consistency without consistent selection? I like him as a player though.

Hehe. Intertubes.

Personally I believe no team has 5th nailed just as no team has 4th 3rd, 2nd or 1st nailed. You can take an educated guess at the teams in the top 5 but I don't believe Villa will be anymore likely than Spurs, Portsmouth or anyone else. I don't think Villa are even that good!

Frustrating performance with hardly any creativity - which is what I could see happening when I saw the line up.

How much have we actually improved on last season? Dossena instead of Riise will hopefully be a slight improvement, Keane instead of Crouch, improvement there. But the Kuyt and Benayoun positions - where's the creative improvement there? That's where we're losing out right now, both players can do a job (as can Babel) but we need that extra one to really push on this season. Someone like Joe Cole (though that's never going to happen) would probably help. I just couldn't see tonight where a goal was going to come from, with Torres and Keane hardly having a sniff.

I think we'll do ok this season, but I really can't see us challenging without at least one more attacking player.

Interesting that Voronin and Pennant were on the bench but he brought El Zhar on - obviously he's still looking to sell them.

We won't be playing 4-4-2 much this season anyway. Once we get Masch, Lucas and Babel back from the Olympics I'd expect to see us reverting back to the system we were using so well from last February onwards.

Even so, there were times from February where we just didn't have that spark. Ok so we might not be playing 4-4-2 a lot (which is why I was careful not to say wingers :)) but we still need that one player who will be able to score and create goals from the Kuyt/Babel positions.

We were a lot more creative once Gerrard was on. It's the typical problem of not having an outlet for the defenders or someone that collects the ball and brings it forward. When that happens we get into the long ball bombardment rutt. You can see how Barry/Cole would help solve that problem.

That'll be Keane or Gerrard depending on which one goes wide and which one plays behind Torres, surely.

Yeah on one side, and then on the left we'd probably have Babel, but if he (or any of the others) were to get injured for any long periods, I just don't think we've got enough creativity in reserve, especially on the left. As was shown last night with Babel and Gerrard not playing. Basically we just need to replace Pennant (as in, his place in the squad) with a better left sided player.

I agree but a solution appears unlikely. Of course if we managed to get Barry that would go a long way to solving that problem. I also feel that Yossi can add creativity from the wide positions when playing in a three.

We were awful last night. Boring football, stupid mistakes... Eugh. It was depressing to watch. Maybe it will act as a kick up the arse, but I doubt it. We can only hope Sunderland are in bad form this weekend if we are going to play like that.
