Aren't midfielders pretty much at their peak around the 27/28yr old mark though? I assume he has 5 or 6 seasons left and if his partnership with Gerrard works wonders then you can't really put a price on it.

That's it, he's at his peak now. It's all down hill from here.

I just think this is all being blown up by the media as some sections seem to love putting us down.

There is talk over at RAWK that Spurs have effectively priced us out of any move for Keane claiming that he appreciates the situation and is happy to stay at Spurs. Great news for you but a shame for us if things do pan out that way (which seems increasingly likely given how quiet it's gone).

Benitez likes Villa... old news. I just hate being teased by these rumours all summer! I was well excited last summer leading up to the Torres transfer, thank god that was pulled off. Don't think I can go through that again.

Just seen that page, this is absolutely amazing news if it happens, have always wanted this. As Diz says though, no new suggestions, most of that article is irrelevant facts from the journalist.

Rafa has said he rates Villa and has had a good look at him but at the moment he isn't a target. No surprises there, then. He also said that he is interested in Keane and will have to wait and see what happens there. Elisha Scott still seems confident that this deal can be pulled off so I'm hopeful that this could actually happen. Perhaps the alleged signing of Luis Garcia by Spurs will work in our favour.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has ruled out an immediate move for Spain striker David Villa, but has admitted he is interested in signing Robbie Keane.

Peter Crouch's imminent move to Portsmouth means Liverpool are in the market for a new striker and on Tuesday Benitez admitted Villa was an option.

"I said the other day that he is one of the names we had on our list," the Spaniard said of the Valencia forward.

"But I can say at this moment that it is not an option for us."

He added: "We know Villa is a very good player, we know the price and we know the players we have, so when you consider everything we decided he was one of the names, but at this moment, not our target."

Tottenham striker Keane has also been linked with a move to Anfield this summer and Benitez admitted he is one of several options the club are currently looking at.

"Keane is one of the other names and OK, we are still working with other names. We were in contact and we will see now."

However, Liverpool could be priced out of a move for the 28-year-old Irishman as Benitez continues his search for a partner for Fernando Torres.

The 23-year-old Spaniard scored 33 goals in a spectacular first season at Anfield, but the club's other strikers only managed a combined total of 17 goals to undermine any hopes of launching a sustained Premier League title challenge.

Villa, 26, scored 18 league goals for Valencia last season and was the top scorer at Euro 2008, notably scoring a hat-trick against Russia in a Group D match.

And he also proved he could form an effective partnership with Torres, despite pre-tournament concerns that Spanish coach Luis Aragones would be forced to leave one out in order to select a balanced team.

It's so annoying not being able to throw around 20mil+ like Man Utd and Chelsea have recently. Let's be honest, we're not going to challenge for the title until we can.

The arse is going to fall out of the Premier League eventually and the less debt we are saddled with the better.

But it has become increasingly obvious that Benitez is working with a much smaller budget than was expected at the end of last season when figures of £25-30million were being suggested as a potential kitty.

He admitted: 'We know the situation regarding what we can spend, and we are trying to find solutions if we do not have enough money.

'And we will still try to sign players that will make us better. But if you do not have too much money, and that is clear, we will have to have a little bit of imagination to progress in the market.

'Everyone knows what our ideas are and what players we want. We are working hard with different names now, and at the moment that is not (David) Villa.

'We will have another main striker before the season starts, maybe two.'

He added: 'We had our ideas at the end of the season. We have tried to use players to raise money for business in the past, sometimes selling players who have not settled down.

'This summer it is very much the same idea. We know we will have to sell some players if we want some cash. So we have to do that.

'The fans must trust us, we are working hard during the summer with a lot of people in different countries working for us.

'We have a new keeper. And we are looking for a lot of players for the right price. Now if we want to spend we can do it. But we have to be careful what we do spend.'

There have been rumours for weeks that Benitez is working with very little money, although sources insist that he can complete the deal for Barry without selling Xabi Alonso.

That deal - with Juventus - has also gone cold and Benitez revealed: 'The situation with Alonso has not changed.

'Juventus made an offer that was not good enough and now we are just waiting. I do not know, really, whether that will go through.

'Xabi wants to stay because he is happy here but he also knows that Juventus is a top side. I have talked to him, he knows my ideas and he knows why. So we will try to find a solution for him, for us, and the best for the club.'

Liverpool have been linked continually with Irish striker Keane. Benitez said: "David Villa is one of the players on our list, but at this moment I do not see it being an option for us.

'Keane is also one of the names we are interested in, and we are still working on other possible situations.

'There has been some contact (over Keane) but we will have to see how things progress.'

On Villa, he added: 'We know he is a very good player, we know the price, and we know the players we have. At this moment he is not our target.

So - we have no money, yet we'll have 1, maybe 2, new strikers at the start of the season. How many players will we have to sell to do that exactly? And Xabi wants to stay, but the no doubt the solution that's best for the club is to sell him.

I don't like that article :)

I don't understand why Benitez wants Barry over Alonso. Let alone Alonso AND Finnan. If I was him I'd be trying to piece together:

........Torres

Babel..........Keane

........Gerrard

.....Alonso

........Mascherano

Dream team. Almost.

Alonso is a great player, but in the position he is being asked to play where he has to muck in with defensive duties I reckon Barry would do a lot better. i think Keane's a brilliant player and would be perfect in the wide attacking position. Aggressive and a good eye for goal.

I tend to agree with you. I'm thinking that Barry might offer a bit more of something we don't have. I still think he is expensive at 18mil though.

Keane is a weird one for me. I would never ever had thought we would be in for him and I never thought he would leave Spurs. The thought of him playing off Torres though is extremely exciting I reckon. He'll have to be less selfish in our team though.

:) No doubt the other 4 will be shown too.

"We will continue looking for good players but not necessarily a 'proper' winger. We'll look for good players and maybe adjust the system. Don't forget, we have some very good players here already, players we have signed over the last 12 months.

"We knew we were creating a lot of chances last season but everybody was talking about the wide areas. If you go to the market and want to sign a top-class right-winger, they will be in the top sides and the price will be crazy. To sign two full-backs with an offensive mentality can give us more quality out wide."

So no wingers again this summer then. I reckon he's talking about getting Keane and someone else instead. Please let it be Silva (though that's never going to happen now that it looks like we'll struggle to even afford Barry and Keane - I mean for god's sake, we got to the Champions League semi final last season, plus all that extra TV money from the Premier League, yet Benitez isn't going to get any cash, instead relying on player sales - argh!!!)

Degen looked pretty decent today going forward. Always looked for the ball as well. Voronin's reduced ponytail also meets with my approval.

Yeah Degen looked pretty good. Voronin didn't play that well at all - so the hair didn't change anything there then.

What like Fabregas?

Fabregas was a complete unknown when he went to Arsenal. Dos Santos played numerous times for Barca last season and it was easy enough to form an opinion of him. 28 appearances, 3 goals, all 3 scored in his final ever appearance. Touted as the new Ronaldinho. Didn't look as good as the current overweight, unmotivated Ronaldinho nevermind the one in his prime. Dos Santos was also rarely unable to get a start ahead of Henry. That sounds ok but when you realise that Henry was quite simply dire last season then it tells a different story.
