Speaking of Villa, any news regarding bringing David Villa to Anfield?

Benitez tried to sign David Villa years ago for Liverpool when he was moving from Real Zaragoza. Obviously this means he rates him. But, it was apparent in the Euro 2008 qualifiers and now in the tournament that there's little indication that Villa and Torres have any sort of partnership. I really don't see this move ever happening and all the signs are that it was never even a starter. We should really attempt to sign David Silva though. He plays really well cutting in from the right and Euro 2008 has dispelled the myth he can't cope with the physical side of things.

Eduardo Macia is said to rate him very highly. He apparently recommends him to Rafa every time they speak. As usual I'm in agreement with you, Vezna. We really should be looking to keep the 4-2-3-1 and build on it by adding quality players suited to the system, rather than start from scratch with the 4-4-2 for the third time.

Talking of strikers, i wouldn't mind us signing that dutch fella, De Noteboom. He looks quality from what i've seen and would add a touch of class to the team IMO.

Too fucking right! He's a wee bit bald though.

I'm fucking getting the new away kit, it's proper nang!

I'm hoping he's a priority.

We've been linked with Keane today, which is an interesting one. Would he be able to play in the Kuyt position? The report also said he's valued at £20m

There's no doubt Keane is quality but I fail to see where he would fit into our system. I would also think he's at Spurs for the rest of his career. It took him a long time to find the right club and he's there now.

I'd love to see Robbie Keane signed. That's obviously not going to happen but I'd love to see a productive, quick, skillful and hardworking second striker playing behind Torres.
He's also a criminally underrated player. If he was English and/or playing for one of the 'big four' he'd be a massive star and it's a shame he isn't because he deserves to be. I mean no disrespect to Spurs whatsoever when I say that. You lot play very exciting, expansive football and I think he is the one player that makes it work over any other. The way he links the play as well as grafting off the ball and carrying a significant goal threat of his own is a rarity in the modern game. I'd have him at Anfield in a heartbeat, even over Berbatov.

Needless to say I'd be very happy if we were to sign Keane this summer.

I love Torres's comment (if i've got it right) after the game:

Reporter: "Was it a foul, on Lahm?"

Torres: "No"

Reporter: "Muscle?"

Torres: *agrees* "Muscle... English Football" *smiles*

:( Legend.

Haha! Awesome! Got a link?

Who? Only thing I can see about that name is something about the EA FIFA games, which I'd hope on-one here would play.

Mauricio Pellegrino is set to return to the club as first-team coach, Rafa Benitez today confirmed.

The Argentine defender, who played 12 games for the Reds under Benitez in 2005, will become the second high-profile addition to the backroom team following the arrival of Sammy Lee earlier in the summer.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv the 36-year-old had much to offer.

"His role will be first-team coach, and he'll also carry out specialist training sessions," said the boss.

"He can also work specifically with the defence, and also the reserves.

"Pellegrino has a winning mentality. He won the Intercontinental Cup before going to Spain with Barcelona and Valencia.

"He has a lot of passion. When I asked him to come he was very pleased, but first he wanted to find out if there was a school where his three children could play good football. He is a football man."

Pellegrino had been coaching Valencia's youth team.

Shrewd signing methinks - he was attributed with helping our defence learn the zonal marking system, and he's obviously highly thought of by Benitez (I seem to remember he was offered a coaching position in summer '05, but decided to carry on playing).

Hopefully the next couple of weeks will be good for player signings too. Looks like we'll be going after Antti Niemi (and if not him, definitely another back up for Reina) as well as wrapping up the Dossena signing after his honeymoon, and probably re-confirming Degen (at a press conference) - so that's the defence sorted.

With Barry speaking out yesterday to say how much he wants to come, and now this:

Robbie Keane stunned Tottenham by telling them he wants to leave.

Sportsmail can reveal that Republic of Ireland striker Keane delivered his shock transfer demand after learning Liverpool had lodged a player-plus-cash bid for him on Friday.

The 28-year-old came out of a meeting at White Hart Lane having left club officials in little doubt about his eagerness to play for his boyhood idols.

Anfield manager Rafa Benitez sees Keane as the ideal strike partner for Euro 2008 match-winner Fernando Torres and is prepared to part with Peter Crouch and around £5million to make it happen.

As with his pursuit of Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry, though, Benitez is going to have to dig deeper after Tottenham rejected his initial offer and placed a £20m valuation on Keane.

Keane's desire to get away from Spurs is a bigger shock. Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and long-serving centre back Jamie Carragher are both friends of the Irishman, who could be one of three strikers to leave Tottenham should the deal go through.

Spurs manager Juande Ramos knows Dimitar Berbatov is unsettled and he is also exploring ways of offloading Darren Bent. Apart from having to increase the cash adjustment, Benitez may also struggle to talk Crouch into being part of the package as the England striker still wishes to join Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth.

Villa confirmed that Barry can move to Anfield, provided Liverpool match their £18m price.

Those 2 could be next. The sales of Alonso, Crouch, Riise, Carson and probably one other (Pennant?) will pay for them and Dossena. Which would leave us breaking even - and it was suggested the Americans would give us a minimal transfer budget of £20m on top of those player sales.

And that just so happens to be the price quoted for Silva.

If we could pull all that off, I'd be pretty happy.

I think Keane would be great as a second striker as well, but would also be a fine first striker when Torres is injured or subbed. At the moment we just have Kuyt and Voronin as cover.

And Babel. And technically Crouch still

If Keane can play where Kuyt was playing at the end of the season, we'd have a fair few options.

4-2-3-1 (for Europe, top half matches etc):

Reina

Degen Agger Skrtel Dossena

Mascherano Barry

Keane/Kuyt Gerrard Silva/Babel

Torres

4-4-2 (for bottom half matches etc):

Reina

Degen Agger Skrtel Dossena

Silva/Babel Gerrard Mascherano Barry

Keane/Kuyt Torres

If (god forbid) Torres and Gerrard were injured:

Reina

Degen Agger Skrtel Dossena

Mascherano Barry

Kuyt Babel Silva

Keane

Reina

Degen Agger Skrtel Dossena

Silva Mascherano Barry Babel

Kuyt Keane

Subs: Niemi, Arbeloa, Carra, Aurelio, Lucas, Benayoun, Voronin

Of course no doubt replace Silva with someone cheaper :D
