I would love to see both at the pool, but that doesn't seem likely.

That's the problem really - we're having to sell a good player to be able to afford to bring another in. We've not had to do that in recent times. In Rafa's time at the club I've only been disappointed to see Owen and Garcia leave.

Liverpool: No Riera bid yet

There has been mention – and a lot of you guys have been asking about - a possible £9 million bid from Liverpool for Riera of Espanyol. I can certainly guarantee that no such a thing has happened.

Espanyol have not received an offer and Liverpool have not made one. Riera is, no doubt, a player that can easily adapt to Liverpool. For those of you who remember him at Manchester city, you’ll recall that the manager was Stuart Pierce: someone who didn’t have much time for creative players who did not track back.

Riera needs someone to be on top of him constantly, but he is good enough to play for any top four team in the Premier League, provided he can be relieved of his defensive duties.

The problem, at least at the moment, is that Espanyol are not selling anybody (having said that, they can’t stop Kameni form going because his buy out clause is just 6 million euros) and I have the impression that Liverpool are leaking stories about Riera, to hide other targets. As well as Gareth Barry (and the selling of Peter Crouch, Riise, Xabi Alonso and Scott Carson), Rafa is preparing a nice surprise for the fans.

As far as I can see nobody has signed Van Der Vaart from Hamburg yet so if Rafa is reading surprise me with him. If not I'll take a tin of red bull and a twix please.

Day after day we see 'Liverpool don't sign player'. Hurf! Just, erm, two players needed, I guess. Probably more, but that'd make me happy and not worry about chances next season, whatever they may be.

On a positive, Dirk's been great for the Dutchies - fantastic team player and simultaneously sending out a massive 'FUCK YOU' to all the haters from earlier on in the season. Go Kuyt! :P

Kuyt was absolute shit earlier in the season. He was a very shit striker for us. Absolutely terrible. So I don't see how he's sending out any sort of 'fuck you'.

It would be like me being a terrible stock broker and then becoming an excellent bus driver. Because it turned out I was an excellent bus driver it wouldn't really send out any sort of message about the quality of my stock broking.

Barry's a bit old, if he was 24 then fair enough. He seems pretty expensive for a 27 year old. Sportsman generally reach their peak at 27 and so it could be downhill from here.

We need pace more than anything. Our team is too slow.

And he's called Gary Barry. That's not on.

Those are old quotes and the source is shite. He'd be a great buy for any team and I'd obviously love to see him brought in. However, I do think we'd have to reshuffle a bit to accommodate him and after the way he handled playing out wide earlier in the season I'm not convinced it would be the best move. Also, there's the small matter of Rafa trying to bring in another CM which possibly hints at his intent to stick to the 4-2-3-1. Oh and the fact that he'll cost £20m or more.

No more Grand Slam Sunday for Liverpool.

Next season it's Arsenal v Chelsea and Man Utd v Man City.

Well that's a weird thing to say.

What about 13th Sept and 25th Oct, where it's Arsenal who are replaced by Man City and Everton respectively?

EDIT: Or 20th Dec, where it's Man Utd who miss out. I mean, what exactly do you mean?

I'm referring to Sky Sports 'Grand Slam Sunday', which for the past 3 or 4 seasons has been the day Man Utd played Liverpool and Arsenal played Cheslea. Next season Man City play Man Utd on the days that Arsenal face Chelsea.

Not sure what the logic is behind changing Liverpool for Man City, but there you go.

Yeah and my point is that it's not necessarily Liverpool that have been dropped, it is, for example, Arsenal that have been dropped for Man City on the day that Liverpool play Man Utd. See what I'm saying? It's nonsense, it just means the fixtures list has unsurprisingly not thrown out any convenient Super Sundays and Sky will get things changed as usual to suit.

Yes, I do see what you are saying but don't agree.

It's no coincidence to me that the line-up 'Man Utd v Man City and Arsenal v Chelsea' occur on the same dates home and away.

That's no coincidence either. The same is true of any pair of fixtures you care to choose, just like it is every season.

Ok. We shall see. I personally feel the 'Man Utd v Man City/Arsenal v Chelsea' will have the ridiculous Grand Slam title.

Not so sure personally that Chelsea v Man City would qualify.

Wait and see what Sky change it to (like they normally do).

Whatever you think about our status or whatever, we still pull in a lot of viewers.

Well as a born and bred Liverpool supporter for the last 37 years, I do find it a little strange.

There is absolutely no doubt that Liverpool and Man Utd pull in the biggest viewing figures worldwide.

Apologies, the first one was spillage from the iPhone thread and the 2nd one is just how Rafa pronounces David Villa. In short I really want us to get him!

No need to apologise, mate; I was just intrigued. I couldn't work out what the first one was about but I knew you had a bit of a hard on for Villa already so the last one was easy. ;)

AS Roma sign Riise from Liverpool

Italian Serie A club AS Roma have signed Norway defender John Arne Riise from Liverpool for £4m. According to Roma's website, the 27-year-old has signed a four-year deal after Liverpool had given them permission to discuss personal terms.

Left-back Riise signed for Liverpool in 2001 and helped them to the FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League titles.

Roma, who will play in the Champions League next season, have been targeting the versatile Norwegian for some time.

Good bit of business if you ask me

Did anyone else watch Alonso today? He looked like a different player for spain with the number of great shots he had. I wish he would do that for us more.

He can't because Benitez sapped all his confidence away like he's done with so many players. All the players who aren't guaranteed to start evey week.

Alonso's not guaranteed to start for them either you know. In fact he barely features for them. Babel, Skrtel, Benayoun, Arbeloa and Lucas seemed to do OK despite not being guaranteed a starting place every week for us last season. That's missing the point somewhat anyway as had Xabi been fit last season he'd have started most games alongside Masch in our 4-2-3-1.

I think it's more a case of him having a different role in the team and it being an international match. The Premiership is played at a much faster pace so he's closed down a lot quicker. He also plays deeper for us than he does for Spain and Spain's midfielders play closer to each other so they can push up as a solid unit. When he plays for us he's got Stevie ahead of him making all kinds of runs and leaving gaps for him to cover and he can't afford to push up as much as Premiership sides don't tend to play it through the middle as much.

As for Riise, I agree that it's good business. It's hard not to when you consider that he had become of little use to us in the end and only had a year on his contract. ramone called it first in here and many of us argued it was just a slump and he'd come through it but that never happened. I'm grateful for his contribution for the first couple of seasons under both Rafa and Ged, but he went horribly off the boil and couldn't find his way back so I'm pleased to see him moved on in the end.
