I'm not sure about that, I think a lot of fans do recognise how well he's played in his new position. The problem is always going to be that he doesn't get enough goals, which is a shame as he seems a genuinely decent player in his current position.

Nope. You only have to look back over this thread and see some of the things people say about him to see I'm right. He was called a 'lumbering joke' on this very page!

As hard working as Dirk is he still has an appalling first touch more often than he should. He's certainly got a long term future at Liverpool FC and I appreciate his contribution but his limitations are still apparent.

I've been saying I'd like us to buy someone with a bit more flair, skill and pace to rotate with him and Babel. Kuyt is well worth his place in the squad, though, and would be one of the first names on the team sheet for me against the better sides.

I think he'll get a few games next season as an out and out forward as well as his current right sided position. Unless by some sort of miracle Benitez is given the money to team up Torres and Villa.

Are you kidding? Downing is the most average player out there. I've never seen him do anything that impressed me whilst watching him on MOTD or in England matches. Maybe i've missed something but he is not the kind of player that will improve Liverpool, whilst not being particularly bad he's not gonna win us the Premiership.

Also, he clearly hasn't impressed Capello enough to get him a starting place!

Out of all the dodgy wingers we have been linked with recently Downing is probably the pick of the bad bunch but surely he would cost a lot of money?

I hear Benitez is going to offer an N reg Escort (nice little runner), two tickets to Legoland Windsor and a bag of gobstoppers for him.

Latest bid for Barry is rejected.

I say leave it to Barry to put in a transfer request now if he wants to join.

He effectively already has put in a transfer request by telling O'Neill that he wants to go, as was reported yesterday. But doing this doesn't necessarily mean that he becomes any cheaper, nor that Villa are any more likely to want any of Liverpool's cast-offs.

What on earth are we doing?! Who are we - Everton?

Rafa's obviously getting desperate - looks like we have little to no money to spend at all. And why offer Insua? Grr :(

I can't see that being true, I wouldn't straight swap Insua for Milner!

I agree. That's one of the reasons why I don't think we need to worry about signing another striker if/when Crouch is sold. Unless Rafa decides to change back to 4-4-2 of course; which isn't likely at all.

That Polish striker looks pretty good, kind of Torres-esque, you deffinately need some kind of understudy for Torres.

9 goals and 6 assists playing in a quite poor Middlesborough side, surrounded by mostly average players? Personally I think he's got what it takes to perform at a higher level, and he has superb dead ball delivery too.

er Darren Bent scored how many goals for a shit Charlton, has he justified his transfer price at Spurs? I think not. Downing is shit!

Right then, stuff Villa there's no way Barry is worth more than £12m let alone £18-20m. So stuff them, Martin O'Neill is living in some sort of dreamland.

We may as well keep Alonso, he had a bad year last season but I would say he's better than Barry, but his move to Juventus is pretty much done and dusted so it's highly unlikely he'll stay.

Seriously though folks, Villa want £18-20million for Gareth Barry :( x100000000

Any more than 15mil for Barry is ridiculous and I think we would be better of looking abroad if it comes to that sort of money. I really still hope Alonso doesn't go but how likely that is i do not know

We could probably get Villa for 20mil so lets go for him instead! :(

Wow, you're right, that must mean everyone who plays well at a smaller club MUST be shit.

A lot of current world class players were merely 'good' at previous clubs, and I can only see Downing getting better.

It's all about the partnership though. Barry and Gerrard together would seem to be greater than the sum of the parts, certainly given Rafa's relentless (but so far pathetic) pursuit of Barry and $tevie G's unwelcome musings. Given their performances together for England, Barry is a more effective foil for Gerrard than Lampard/Hargreaves/Carrick (and Alonso, for that matter) - all of whom moved recently for serious money and/or would come with an eye-watering price-tag in today's market. Why should Barry be any different?

Barry would also allow Liverpool to effectively use the 4-5-1 formation which seems so much in favour at the minute, giving Gerrard even more licence to support Torres. He's a perfect fit for the team.

The problem that Liverpool have now is that they've played their hand, they've tried to do the deal through the press and through Gerrard's contact with Barry in the England squad, and they've offered players that O'Neill clearly thinks aren't up to the mark. Villa don't need the money, and I think they know that Barry is at least loyal enough to honour his contract for another season without it affecting his game - and *if* Villa can further close the gap on the current 'big four', then *maybe* all bets about Barry still wanting to move next year might be off. Fuck knows really.

I'm quite enjoying this transfer saga actually - intrigued to see how it all pans out.

If we bought Villa we wouldn't be able to accommodate him. We would either have to put Gerrard on the right of the three or revert back to 4-4-2 and buy a new right winger. Do either of those scenarios sound likely to happen? I rate David Villa, I've been saying for years and years how good he is. Rafa's tried to sign him twice since he's been here but I think we've moved on. I just don't see the point in fucking with a good thing, and disturbing the partnership Gerrard and Torres have developed would be doing just that. We've not been linked with him by any credible sources and judging by the players we are actually after I doubt we're looking at a change in formation.

That Polish striker looks pretty good, kind of Torres-esque, you deffinately need some kind of understudy for Torres.

We don't. We play with one upfront and even after Crouch leaves we'll still have Babel, Kuyt, Nemeth and Voronin that can play there. Three strikers are enough to compete for one place, we're already pretty overkill in that regard, and if our funds are as limited as they seem we can't afford to strengthen our strike force.

Downing is a funny one. He's looked pretty handy at times this season and I've been impressed with him in quite a few Middlesbrough games I've seen. However, he's looked pretty ordinary with more regularity. I don't think he's good enough to hold down a first team place in our side, particularly in the system we play, and I definitely don't think he'd equate to good value at £12m.

You're a cock.

Using the quality of your posts in the last 10 pages as a benchmark, I'll take that as a huge compliment. The nature of the debate here means that most people aren't going to like what I'm saying, but at least the rest of them manage to rise above monosyllabic grunts and insults.
