No. I can't see what more he has to offer than Scholes, Carrick or Anderson.

then u need to look at stats Gabz because they don't lie. Schole is quality, but on the slope down from his peak, also a different player to Xabi. the closest player to Alonso here is Carrick, and right now Alonso is better. none of the Alternatives cover more ground or have a higher passing accuracy. I'm not playing Gerrard as a right midfielder or Ronaldo as a left or Rooney as an out and out striker. the future of football is interchangability trust me, it makes it almost impossible for defenders to mark, all 3 would have free reign as i said, swapping and covering eachothers positions

I'd put Vidic in any team I played so he'd start in front of Carragher. It's a toss up between Agger and Ferdinand. Before his injury I'd have taken agger but he's been out for ages now.

Xabi is as good as the Man U contingent, but he lacks a bit as a defender. He definitely looks at this best with Mascherano.

Reina and VDS are good shot stoppers but both are flakey at crosses. Neither can touch Cech's ability to command his area.

No but it isn't played across the board as of yet, it won't be long before it is though

Is there enough talent in the world?

I can't see it working at Watford...wait they already do it. HIT IT LONG!!!

Not really, no. We play with one up front. We have Torres, Kuyt, Babel, Voronin and Crouch. Crouch and possibly Voronin will be moved on this summer. Nemeth will likely feature on our bench quite heavily next season, too.

Seriously? Are you honestly happy to go into a gruelling season with only a single (albeit brilliant) consistent goalscorer? People go on about all Ronaldo's goals for United but Tevez and Rooney have scored a combined total of around 40 in all competitions. How many goals do you see the rest of your front 3 getting?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Alonso stay. Rafa has said he wants Barry to complement what we already have rather than replace anybody. Also, Xabi is a fantastic player. He had some bad injury problems this year and struggled for form after his reason. But towards the end of the season he wa showing why Rafa persists with him. He works very hard and is a great creative outlet for the side.

I think Barry will replace him in midfield before too long if he is asked to play at the back of the midfield. Alonso is an excellent passer but I don't think he is good enough defensively. It's not even like he's got a lot of pace either. I just think Barry is better in the position that I imagine they will both be asked to play. Alonso would be better in Gerrard's role distributing to the front 3.

Any Man U fans here? Would you pick Alonso over your other midfielders?

If I could have only one of either Alonso or Anderson playing for my team for the next decade I would take Anderson without a doubt. The potential he has is breathtaking. Signed as an attacking midfielder the way he's slotted in more as a defensive midfielder is stunning. He did run out of steam before the end of the league season but once again Utd have something potentially very special.

Sell Gerrard, buy Deco. What do you think?

Deco is a waste of space. Classy player but the mentality is all wrong.

i see a lot more to come from Arbeloa and who have utd got to offer thats any better at right back? with gerrard rooney and ronaldo given free reign to swap round with eachother this team would be untouchable. Ferdinand has to be for me one of the most over-rated players of all time! he is good, but somehow the countless mistakes he makes in games never seem to get picked up by the media!? trust me insua is going to be quality, i can see him cementing that 1st team place by mid season

Ferdinand has been brilliant this season, he seems to have actually ironed out a lot of the mistakes he was making in previous seasons.

I dought Gerrard is going to play RM again. I think he'll leave for Chelsea if that happens (and probably if they win the UCL).

Maybe over O'Shea, but his scoring record is better against Liverpool than vice versa  1 more season in 4th place and I think Gerrard will leave.

Except Carrick who's just a big sack of useless. :(

If that £18 million sack helped you to two titles you wouldn't be complaining :P

I think Ronaldo has had more impact than Carrick

You can throw "passes completed" at me all you want but I bet Didi Hamman had loads. Cos they were square. And on paper a few years ago Danny Murphy was the best % crosser (above Beckham), had loads of assists, and was hitting 10-15 a season in all competitions. What happened to him?

Hargreaves is far superior to Carrick in every department, except he's not as tall and is possibly German.

Well thats a kind of obvious statement seeing as Anderson is still a kid and Alonso is in his prime!?

What's wrong with Deco's mentality exactly!!?? he wanted to stay at Barca, they said they didn't need him, he thanked them for their honesty, but said i'll go where i want then, not where u tell me, what's wrong with that!?

1 more season in 4th place and I think Gerrard will leave.

He's recently publically stated that he's at Anfield for life. Barring some sort of club ownership bullshit the chance of him leaving and / or Liverpool cashing in on him is nearly gone. Besides, for whatever reason we're signing his mate Gareth Barry. Room mates at a junior level apparently.

hahaha yeah canadian german remember!

don't agree with u about Carrick though. he is a very good player who is not far off becoming one of real quality. u need to watch him properly to see what he does in a game, he knows where he will release the ball before it gets to him, and the vast majority of the time puts it there, he isn't as good as Alonso YET, but may well be within the next two years

Carrick is a considerably better passer. For me Carrick brings a far better vision and ability to play through the centre than we had previously where it was always about the wide men. Either way he can't be doing too bad at the job.

Wasn't it Deco and someone else who said they should be allowed to go out partying etc. when they feel like it because it is there life and they can do what they want? If that isn't a bad attitude I don't know what is. Plus he can't defend for shit which is pretty useless in the premier league (see: Veron).

Alonso is only 24. Four years potentially to go until he hits his prime.

Deco has spent a chunk of the current season (with Ronaldinho) suspended by the club. He's more interested in nightclubs than football matches. Barcelona have dressing room problems, hence why three supremely talented players - Deco, Ronaldinho and Eto'o are being kicked out.

i very much doubt that. he became disillusioned with things a couple of years ago, then they won the Champions league, he will never leave liverpool now, and i wouldn't want him to unless he fancys a stint at QPR!

I don't think he'd move to another English club, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him go abroad. Loyalty or not he isn't there to nearly win titles.

yeah there is, it just depends on whether coaches in this country keep sucking it out of kids instead of nurturing it. trust me i train U13's and have seen that there is so much skill and technical ability in the youth of this country. it just gets bred out of em before they mature into young adults, at least Cappelo agrees, he knows what he's talkin about.

in Portugal and Spain they spend 4/5ths of their designated training hours with the ball at their feet in this country 2/5ths is high! too much talk of tactics, fitness drills and strength building is killing our kids flair and talent. let a kid run around with a ball at his feet doing drills builds skill technique AND fitness, the more skillfull players are the better the defenders that train with them become, it's not rocket science, but it doesn't seem to be seen like that by a lot of coaches in this country, which is probably why we don't have any top rate coaches either!

Carrick is quality and its arse to suggest that all of his passes are sideways. He has been completely consistent this season and has threaded quality balls through the eyes of needles during some of the matches I've watched. So I wouldnt have Alonso over him no.

Has Xavi even played that much this season? I dont recall seeing him as much as last season.

What good is another great goalscorer if he's just sitting on the bench for 90% of games like Crouch did this year? Babel and Kuyt are capable enough of deputising as and when they're required to. Babel and Kuyt were both into double figures this season. I expect Babel to score more than that once he's properly settled and firing. Benayoun also managed double figures playing predominantly from the bench. If we add another player that can play wide and bring creativity and goals to the squad then we'll do OK. As I said before, the fullback positions are important because they are key to the way this system is played.

I think Barry will replace him in midfield before too long if he is asked to play at the back of the midfield. Alonso is an excellent passer but I don't think he is good enough defensively. Alonso is consistently in and around the top of 'most successful tackles' stat tables for a reason. His contribution to games goes much further than the odd eye catching pass. A lot of his defensive work goes unnoticed. He struggled with injury this season but he's a valuable member of the squad and I don't see Rafa selling him unless money is really tight or he wants to move back to Spain.

really, well the first one i posted about rafa i was being sarcastic and the second one to create a discussion, i never said this will happen merely what if it did. what else have i spoke bollocks about? u have ur opinions, i have mine, thats what i thought a forum was about, i didn't say anything personal about u or anyone else, so why did u feel it was ok to try and mug me off!? because we're typing words on a computer? i doubt u'd have tried to act a flash cunt if we were face to face.
