He does do it all the time though Wong. In the first leg last week he could have been drunk the amount he was falling over.

Yes, it was frustrating to watch believe me. A lot of it seems to depend on his mood. If he's up for it he'll take a foul (or contact if you prefer) stay on his feet and try and play on. If not he'll wait to be fouled and go down like he's been shot. That's just playing the game though. It's not the same as pretending there was contact and going sprawling ala Ronaldo, Torres, Pirez, Joe Cole, or countless others.

This thread just provided something I thought I'd never see, someone claiming that Drogba isn't a dirty diving cheat. Even my Chelsea supporting friends admit he loves to find the floor.

As I say he can be incredibly frustrating (but also fantastic obviously) and his theatrics are pretty embarrassing, but on the whole I think he gets fouled a lot more than he dives.

I thought he was fouled by Carragher in that instance (as you say it probably was outside the box), but he obviously didn't get that one. I'm not saying Drogba never simulates, he's no saint, I'm just saying that people seem to accuse him of constantly diving when in fact the truth of it is that he is fouled an awful lot.

Would you say Drogba leaning into Carragher before Carragher's challenge was a foul or not?

I'll have to confess I haven't seen it since so it may well have been. My initial thought was that Drogba had muscled Carragher out of the way and Carragher had gone to ground and taken Drogba's legs. Might have been wrong though.

You know I should have saved all this for tomorrow. Drogba will probably blatently dive in the are to win a penalty tonight and I will be forced to issue a public retraction.

That's the point though - Drogba can muscle Carragher out of the way and that's all it is, but the moment someone tries to 'muscle' Drogba it's CONTACT and thus Drogba can justifiably leap to the ground and claim a foul? This is what pisses everyone off.

That's football isn't it? Pushing someone in the back is a foul, barging somebody off the ball shoulder to shoulder isn't. Backing into somebody when you've got the ball isn't a foul but do it when you haven't got the ball and the whistle blows. It's a funny old game and all that.

EDIT: Anyway, I apologise for dragging this topic away from the discussion of what is for both teams a massive game.

That is exactly why I asked the question.

None of that applies to what Drogba does. If Carragher had been the one leaning into Drogba he'd have just gone down and probably won a freekick.

No need to apologise. This little debate has taken my mind off the current horror which is this season's Champions League as well as the Criminal Law exam I'll be taking tomorrow (and should be revising for).

Didn't someone recently say that Benitez was obsessed with details? So it might be natural he'd "know his enemy".

here or playerwise? Torres said a few days ago that Benitez was obsessed with details, and I don't think he;s the first player to mention it this season

Ooh bad time to have an exam. Jolly bad luck.

You know, I was thinking to myself, I remember Drogba giving away as many fouls as he won in that game, so I tried to find some stats to support this hypothesis. I couldn't find any for that specific game but I did find some for the whole competition.

On average Drogba commits more fouls than he wins! Which doesn't surprise me to be honest as he's a very physical player. You could read many things into this I suppose, but if he is diving he's obviously not doing it very well.

The team in full is:

Reina

Arbeloa

Carragher

Skrtel

Riise

Mascherano

Alonso

Benayoun

Kuyt

Gerrard

Torres

Subs:

Itandje

Finnan

Hyypia

Crouch

Pennant

Babel

Lucas

I thought he may play Finnan instead of Riise, and Pennant instead of Benayoun - but otherwise as expected.

Come on Liverpool!

It has been a pretty poor half really, and a big blow losing Skrtel. It is frustrating their goal was offside but it doesnt change the fact we have to score.

We need Gerrard to step up I think, he has looked lost.

Really doesn't look good does it?

Chelsea are sitting back, and Torres prefers space...

I'm still thinking it was a mistake to drop Torres and Gerrard at the weekend. Both do not look sharp. Last week Torres also looked off the pace - tonight again his touch is not quite right, he's just not been on it. Thus far.

Chelsea could have had 2 or 3. That Ballack freekick was mighty close.

At the moment it's not looking good. But that night in istanbul. Thing is this reminds me a little of Benfica at home. We might be on the wrong end of a bit of a battering unless things improve dramatically.
