Regarding the penalty shout I think I would have been annoyed if we hadnt got a penalty for something similar but it was hardly the stone wall decision the commentators etc. made out at the time.

You mean Andy Gray of course...

So, after Dirk's triumph, it seems a safe time to ask. Just how did he score 71 goals in 101 appearances for Feyenoord? Is the Dutch league just really poor? What sort of player was he in Holland?

He mostly played in the role Torres does for us now. I don't think Rafa believed he had the physical attributes necessary to lead the line over here and tried to compensate for the loss of a second defensive midfielder by making the second striker do some of the leg work. The Dutch league is very weak compared to ours as well. He's done very well for himself since we've been playing this 4-2-3-1 and I'd be very surprised to see him sold in the summer, which wasn't the view I took on the matter a few short months ago.

Might be worth taking a look at Arshavin after tonights performance, that guy is quick/skillful and full of confidence.

Sporting Lisbon's Miguel Veloso would be a brilliant buy as well if Alonso departs. He's been tracked by Man Utd for a long time but I really don't see him joining them as they are well covered in his position. Once again against Rangers last night he was a cut above every other player on the field.

The same way Mateja Kezman and Afonso Alves had stupidly high goal ratios - the league is shite and makes good players look like outstanding ones.

I know i'm late but great result on wednesday, really sets us up nicely for the Anfield return which I think we will win 2-1. All this shouts of stone wall penalties are a bit much though. I think it could have been a penalty but no way definite. Its hard to even tell how much Kuyt touched him to be fair. Also, as other people were saying, Torres looked like he was pulled down in the 83rd minute but we didn't even get a replay of that! Infact, all night some seriously contentious decisions were absent from the replay camera!

Tomorrow I think we will lose -_- I very rarely say that but I think Rafa will rest a few players and Arsenal will be keen to keep up with Man U. IF we do win however and he has played Crouch, Benayoun and Lucas how then does he decide on the team for Tuesday? It could be argued that those same players should be playing as they helped us win at the Emirates. Obviously a 'What if' scenario.

No  Veloso is amazing. You can take Hargreaves if you want -_-

Nope, too late. I've emailed Rafa and he's agreed to sign Veloso. Alonso is off to Real Madrid and we are signing Sporting Lisbon's latest superstar.

How do they do it anyway? Ronaldo, Nani and now Veloso. Sportings striker bloke is off to Sevilla as well. They are like a conveyor belt of talent.

They have the oldest and best football school in the country. They grab them young and produce wonderful talents. As a Porto supporter I can only watch in envy. But the good thing is as as soon as they get really good someone else snatches them up (Man Utd)

What do Sporting spend all the money on?

Mascherano ban appealed:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ool/7314834.stm

He'll still miss tomorrow, but it's being appealed, obviously on a point of principle rather than to quash the ban completely. An extra two match ban for a relatively minor offence is a preposterous punishment, and I suspect that the FA will be forced to squirm whilst watching videos of the intimidating, moaning, preening likes of Cole, Ronaldo, Terry, Rooney & Ferdinand & even a minor offender like Adebayour (who received an additional one match for behaving worse than Mascherano after last year's Carling Cup final).

I'm not so sure, you still aren't safe in 4th yet. If you lose tomorrow and go through to the semi's on tuesday then Rafa will no doubt rest players in the premiership games prior to the semis. Everton aren't looking quite as good of late but if Liverpool do drop points in a few more games then it could get close. I fancy a dull draw at the weekend with neither team trying to give anything away.

Maybe, but this is after what was seen as a clamp down on dissent. Comparing it to an incident almost a year ago isn't necessarily a fair comparison. Not saying I agree with the extra ban mind. Also, do you have the string "Cole, Ronaldo, Terry, Rooney & Ferdinand" saved to a single key or something as it appears in quite a few of your posts! :)

Everton have plenty more dropped points ahead of them. Check out their remaining fixtures.

The problem being its a MEDIA driven clamp down. I fucking hate the way the FA work in this country! Didn't notice any yellow cards for dissent last weekend. You telling me every football player has suddenly stopped shouting and screaming at the referee?! :)

I wonder if they'll look at videos of Gerrard asking refs for free kicks and cards too.....

Ferdinand, Rooney and Ronaldo could have been booked / sent off for cheating and dissent in numberous matches recently. Ferdinand at OT on Easter Sunday told the ref to fuck off and moaned on other occasions....there were at least three or four bookable offences in there, and that's not even mentioning the kicking he gave Torres. Rooney told the ref to fuck off without punishment. Ronaldo moaned and dived all over the place. Gerrard should have been booked for telling the ref to fuck off too.

It's consistency I ask for - I accept that referees make MISTAKES but most of these things aren't mistakes, they're certain players being allowed to get away with more than eithers, time and time again. Even after this imaginary "crackdown". As with all FA "crackdowns" it involves making an example of a solitary player and fading into the ether. Furthermore, the FA and indeed Fabio Capello made a complete mockery of it and showed just how much of a "crackdown" it was when they allowed Rio Ferdinand to assume the mantle of England captain the week after.

If you weren't so blatantly anti-united I would bother to reply to this :)

Gerrard is the worst offender in the Liverpool squad. Though he doesn't contest decisionsin nearly the same way as Rooney, Ferdinand and their snarling ilk, his weakness is that he dives too much....Torres, for instance, gets caught a lot and goes down because of his pace and acceleration, but Gerrard falls over too often for next to no reason. Okay, he's not as regular an offender as Ronaldo but he's spoken out against 'foreign' players who dive which makes it worse.
