An excellent point by dizogg. If goals are shared more suddenly "you don't have a top striker" etc.

Liverpool currently have the best Striker in the prem by miles. Something we always needed, our "20 goals a season man" to deliver us the title.

Like the rubbish that was spouted when it was said "Paul Ince is the missing piece", this is simply wide of the mark.

Where are we now, and where were we then?

There's been some amazing nonsense posted in this thread since Sunday.

It reminds me of the football thread in the days following England crashing out of a major tournament.

Anyways, Mascherano being punished further would be silly. He's had a fair punishment already.

Quite simply we are still behind the 3 teams above us and its debatable whether that is down to them improving or us staying the same. Personally I think we have improved but we are constantly chasing a moving shadow.

I think we just need to get more world class players. We have a decent base of a team now, but we need more players who can really change a game. Be interesting to see what happens this summer. I think we must keep Rafa.

No more signings of £6 million squad players. If we have a budget of £30 million then we might as well blow it on one top class player. Keep our system and spend big to sign Sergio 'Kun' Aguero please Mr. Benitez.

Playing him where? We'd be crazy to move him into a wide position and Gerrard has been great playing off Torres (he'd also never accept playing on the right). Looking at the market I think we're going to have to gamble on somebody. There are no world class attacking midfielders to play from the right currently available. I think our best bet is to take a punt on somebody like Palacio. He isn't proven at the highest level, he has no experience of European football and he is pretty much an unknown over here. However, he is quick, skillful, scores plenty of goals and operates perfectly on the right side of a very similar system to our own. Pandev would be another I'd be interested in.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Aguero brought in. I just don't think we could accomodate his talent without upsetting the balance we've already found. Ideally the player we are looking for has:

Experience playing as an attacking midfielder, preferably from the right.

Pace.

Versatility on the ball (some trickery and guile as well as the ability to deliver the early ball).

Goal threat.

Set piece expertise.

I think Ashley Young is the only English player that may be available this summer and also ticks all the boxes. The only problem is the transfer fee as I can see him costing big money.

Every big club will also be looking for that player this summer. The likes of Quaresma and Mancini are going to be sought after once more. I think a player like Pandev or Palacio would be ideal; they're likely to slip under the radar as they would represent a risk to a Premiership side, but have the quality to deliver once/if they adapt.

Yep, Pandev would be ideal as well. Aguero can play from a wider starting position and come inside. Who is to say if he starts on the right of the three behind Torres he has to stay there. He would be like Babel, looking to always come inside instead of being shackled to a wing. He could rotate with Gerrard or Babel or both even in a system to totally confuse the opposition. Aguero is a superb talent and is likely to be world class sooner rather than later. We need this caliber of player and we need it quickly. With Chelsea alledgedly signing Modric and with Man Utd having the rather superb Anderson blossoming very, very quickly we need to compete on a level playing field. Aguero is one of few truely superb players that could feasibly be purchased. As much as I would like Kaka or Messi they are literally unbuyable.

I think playing him on the right of the three would be taking too much away from his game, though. The space he finds between the lines, the way he dictates the tempo and plays into the space he makes would be all but lost. Whoever plays on the right needs to be able to stretch defences with pace and look to hit the box often. As we've seen with Babel, they'll see most of the ball in advanced positions, often behind the defence. Rafa likes the formation to be defensively stable and solid. Three players interchanging at will would be difficult for our opponents but also difficult for us as it would leave holes everywhere. I don't see Rafa setting us up in that way. I really doubt that Atletico would let us take their prized asset away for the second summer running as well. For what it's worth: I think Aguero is a phenomenal talent but we missed the boat by not signing him when he was leaving Argentina and calling the club by name as his preferred destination.

You are 100% right but even so I would still like us to try and shoehorn him in to our formation even if he needs to modify his game. He's young enough to be adaptable to a new system and I would take the chance on him rather than spend big on the totally inconsistant although quite spectacular when he wants to be Quaresma or Mancini, who I think is just a few years too old. I just gave the three interchanging players as something that could be done but it's not something I would want to see personally. We are just crying out for another Torres this summer, a player that can take us up a notch. I can't think of too many examples that we could buy apart from the ones you've shown. Van Der Vaart? Huntelaar (back to 4-4-2 for his arrival though)?

Apparently Benitez is already building for next season:

"We have agreements with two young players and one senior player who will be a starting XI player. That deal is already done," said a bullish Benitez. "We are also making plans for our preseason tour and talking to players here about new contracts."

Benitez has been strongly linked in Germany with Schalke's Brazilian full-back Rafinha, who is known as 'Little Rafa'. The two younger players are believed to be from South America.

Anyway, onto tomorrow. I reckon Benitez will spring a surprise:

--------------Reina

Arbeloa Carra Skrtel Aurelio

Gerrard Lucas Alonso Babel

---------Torres Crouch

Crouch will actually play!

I've heard great things about Rafinha. With Riise's imminent departure I wonder if Arbeloa will get a few games at left back next season when Aurelio is injured.

I always think we'll destroy Everton. Always. Yet we seem to do a bit shit. The league match earlier this season - how lucky were we?

Carragher going MAD, us getting a pen, etc, etc.

We were lucky to win.

So, for once, I'm not going to call it. In fact I fancy Everton considering how crap we are against them.
