You haven't been watching the match and you can say with absolute certainty that Mascherano wasn't mouthing off? Good to see some humility from the other guys here, United were the better team and deserved the three points.

Well form what's been posted it seems that Man Utd players have been mouthing off but haven't been booked. Consider Mascherano didn't actually mouth off I'd call that inconsistent.

Meh, it was coming. Alonso tried to hold him back and he just barged through yelling away. None of the United players were even nearly as aggressive today. Torres wasn't either, so unless he just said too much that one was harsh.

No but I've been listening to it on 5Live and they just said that the ref was a cock, wasn't consistent and ruined what should have been a great game. They said Liverpool played great for 20 minutes and then imploded. Sounds like typical Liverpool.

That's just not true.

Mascherano was an utter lunatic today. Why he was hyped up to the levels he was is beyond me.

Utd where worthy winners and our only hope of getting anything was shot down by Mascherano's loss of self control.

He was booked because he had persistently been in the referees face since his first booking and had been getting increasingly aggressive. It wasn't for the one incident, it was an accumulative booking, much in the way that a ref might book a player for 3 or 4 tackles that are a bit poor but wouldn't merit a yellow card on their own.

What did Masch do?

After his first booking he decided to start giving the ref grief after every foul that didn't result in a booking for a United player. It was clear that he was going to get sent off eventually. Gerrard could have spotted it and calmed him down but he seemed like he was on a mission to get a red.

The ref finally cracked when Torres had a go, seemingly about the United players not being booked for fouling him and booked him. Enter Mascherano from 30 yards away to ask for his booking aswell. It was moronic to go running at the ref when he's just booked your team mate for dissent but he'd had it coming all game anyway.

Can't blame someone for getting extremely pissed at a completely biased ref though can you?

I'll have to download the match to check it out for myself. Sounded rather boring apart from the controversy which is all anyone is talking about.

The better team won, sure, but Torres' booking and Mascherano's second yellow were absolute joke decisions.

As an isolated incident I'd agree. The ref was probably harsh on Torres but Mascherano deserved to go for constant dissent. His reaction to the first booking could easily have seen him go. Though maybe a better referee has a word, brings in the captain and calms him down. Bennett does like to stride off ignoring the players.

He was hyped from the start, his first booking was early and he went loko at that.

I'm just disappointed he (Masch) gifted United the game so early and 90% of people watching could see it coming a mile off.

Not really, the ref did a decent job until then and Mascherano mouthing off whenever a decision went against Liverpool. If Torres just got on with the free-kick, instead of telling the ref to book the United player then I doubt Mascherano would have been sent off.

I think Masch was just fucked off at getting booked for his first foul, which was not remotely cynical...

They need to get these refs to use some common sense, that's the problem.

First dodgy foul - pull them up and say 'that's your lot'.

Second dodgy foul = yellow card.

The players respect that type of approach.

The refs strolling around with their high and mighty attitude is where the problems start.

People talk about the referees in rugby and the rules of conduct but they always fail to miss the point that Rugby refs have a tendency to talk to the players and explain their actions..

Ferdinand was moaning and committing fouls all day. One yellow. Kicked Torres to pieces. Rooney should be sent off constantly if complaining to the ref is taboo. Why wasn't Ronaldo booked for *another* of his fairy like dives today? Was it misinterpreted as him scouting for the man love his appearance and outrageously camp demeanour suggests that he seeks?

We just want some fucking consistency. You know what? At least Mascherano showed some fucking passion, which our "captains" Gerrard & Carragher were sorely lacking today. In fact, the only thing he did wrong was naively believe that the referee would treat him the same as he did the Man Utd players. Torres was guilty of that moments before, too. They'll now know that referees are expressly told by Premier League head honcho Sir Alex Ferguson to protect his team, and are paid accordingly.

I don't think anyone respects the opinions of David Pleat.

:) Quoted for truth

I enjoyed that too

I think this is the thing - players should not be telling the ref how to do his job.

Too much of it going on and Ferdinand was just as bad.

Totally agree here. The thing which really annoyed me about Masch was that he's going to be missing against Everton now and, after his spectacle after getting the red, he could quite easily miss Arsenal too.

I can't fault his passion (Gerrard was missing again today), but we've got 3 big league games coming up, as much as I'd love to beat Utd it's probably the least important of the 3, especially now that Arsenal lost. Masch has been such a good player this season - we'll miss him in next game(s).

I really don't understand how anyone can think Masch's yellow for dissent was undeserved. He was snapping at the ref like a deranged hyena from the first yellow, and that was in the opening minutes. Every free kick he was dancing around the ref ranting shit. So fucking dumb. Especially when most of the decisions were not in anyway controversial or even that important. No player out for a season. No penalty that never was. Just run of the mill tackles. The man is a plum.

If Masch had just walked over to the ref and spoke to him from a proper distance it would have been fine, but instead he runs over and gets in his face, which after doing the same at least 2 times previously is bloody stupid. Benitez should bollock his entire for team for not one of them dragging him away from the ref.
