So....

If Man Utd fail to win today (0-1 at home vs Portsmouth right now) they're potentially 8 or 9 in front of us come the end of the weekend. If we both keep on winning but ambush them at Old Trafford, the gap would be 6 points.

Now, we won't win the league this season but I think we're seeing right now that the gap is not unbridgable. If they don't equalise today, they've lost two more games than us - A dodgy run of draws has essentially done us in, but with a team, when at full-strength, which is as young as Arsenal's (but hasn't had the same amount of time to blend together from the teenage years), with our young reserve team topping their league things don't look all that bad for the future, do they?

You may want to see what competition they're currently playing in...

Er...

?

Were it not for a dodgy run under the most trying circumstances our club has faced in a decade, things would be different. We might be a lot closer to the top.

We're undeniably harder to *beat* than Man Utd, but our problem has been drawing silly games. I don't think our base for a promising future looks bad at all.

And I do think they'll still likely pip Arsenal this season.

Anyone thinking that this formation might just be our natural calling - in the league at least - given the players we have?

Looks like it - since we don't really have great wingers, and 4 quality central midfielders - this plays to our strengths.

Doesn't sound like it's been the best of games though, Benayoun has hardly been mentioned.

Newcastle are playing with 9 men constantly in their own half, so it's always going to be a bit crowded, but I think the key is that we've broken down a team with no ambition within the first half. They'll have to come at us after the break now, so hopefully a routine 5 or 6-0 victory will be the result.

True - would be nice to see Crouch come on and get a goal - though only replacing Torres after he's scored his hat trick

I'd take Torres off within the next 5 or 10 minutes. His job is done. Roll on Inter.

From the BBC Live Updates

1559: "Keegan has completely turned Newcastle around. Under Allardyce they were mid-table fodder, now they look relegation certainties."

Harsh but I really am starting to fear for Newcastle. You just can't see where their next win, or even point is going to come from.

Fuck up not withstanding that's the exact reason this season has been so annoying. Man U aren't going great guns, they're not playing like they were last year and I think they're a fair few points behind where they were last season but we're still miles behind them. This is why I don't understand you lot going "Oh, we didn't think we'd win the league this season." Why not? If we'd won the games we should have won we'd be right up there. I'd admire your positivity and you certainly are a glass half full kinda guy but this season might have been our chance for a long time, who knows. If next year Man U are as good as they were last year then we'll have to improve a lot, you know? We could definitely have been right up there had Rafa used his noodle from teh start of the season.

As for this beiung a traumatic season, the only difference of the last few weeks is that we're winning. If we were losing we'd still be using that behind the scenes stuff as an excuse.

Another good win today! What kind of reception did Owen get?

Torres' goal was another brilliant one today, without touching the ball and without losing his stride he completely fucked over the keeper, best striker in the league imho.

He's unstoppable right now and I fail to see how even putting a man on him to mark him constantly would work. The acceleration, pace and outrageous body swerve must make the man a nightmare to deal with. Teams will try and nullify him though and if defenders are all watching Torres then this will give Babel and Gerrard more room to maneouvre.

If it wasn't for Harper yesterday then Newcastle could have been much worse off.
