He made no attempt to put a stop to these rumours, which is the most annoying element to all of this.

It really is - by not coming out and fully supporting the manager, everyone just thinks that he's bound to be sacked. Which, considering that they're not saying 'Rafa's not going to be sacked', leads me to believe they're thinking of sacking him ;)

I think the fact that Liverpool fit into the bracket of a 'big four' club, but don't actually have anything like the money of Man U or Chelsea (Arsenal are exceptional case of succeeding without spending under Wenger) just means that any average to poor signings by Benitez get highlighted more, while Fergie can make up for his by splashing the cash on whoever seems to fit the bill in the next transfer window.

He spent I don't even know how much trying to find the 'next Roy Keane' on Alan Smith, Kleberson and Djemba-Djemba(?!), before eventually spending a ridiculous sum on the best defensive midfielder outside the big four at the time, then when even that didn't work quite perfectly enough for him, he bought England's best performer at the World Cup for a further £17m to see if he might be a slight improvement. Alex Ferguson and United's Quest For a New Roy Keane is simply a story of trying to be clever, failing at every turn, before biting the bullet and simply splurging the cash on whoever happened to be in vogue at that particular moment. Even Roy Keane himself was hardly plucked from obscurity, being the British transfer record fee at the time. And people complain about Benitez signing Sissoko...

As for Morientes, if he's proof that Benitez doesn't understand the Premiership (or didn't in his very first season), then presumably Diego Forlan is proof that Ferguson still hadn't got to grips with the demands of English football 16 years into his tenure? But not to worry, because Fergie could once again bail himself with all the foresight required of a work experience making up the latest transfer news for the sun out by spending £30m on Wayne Rooney.

The same story crops up again with Rio Ferdinad. "Who was England's best young player at the World Cup? Will £30 million do?"

Ronaldo was another signing in the same mould of obviousness. Having already been scouted Liverpool and been the player to play against United that pre-season, his own players were begging Ferguson to sign him up before he took the plunge. By stupidly bidding three times Sporting's asking price.

In fact you can go through United's entire starting XI and with the exception of Giggs (one of the Golden Generation Ferguson was lucky enough to inherit) and the possible exception of Vidic (I say possible because hadn't Benitez actually scouted him first?) they are almost all, to be blunt, extremely obvious signings. Even Cantona basically through himself at United at the time.

While their transfer history is littered with examples of times Ferguson has tried to be clever, and as I say simply got it wrong. Tim and time again. As Liverpool fans, think about that next time you have a go at Rafa for the fact that his third choice signings aren't up to scratch.

I don't really know much about Parry but he seems to be pretty hated. What's the deal with him, then?

That's pretty much why I think. We've missed out on a lot of first choice signings the past few years. Alves being a good example - for £2m more we could've signed him (for about £12m). Now he's worth £20m ;)

Plus he seems to drag his feet over everything. Especially Gerrard's contract.

He just takes forever to sort anything out. He's constantly dragging his heels in the transfer market and did the same in sorting investment out. A lot of this fall out between Rafa and G+H is down to Rafa using his connections and scouts to negotiate deals with clubs for targets without waiting for Parry. This happened with Torres and Mascherano. Rafa sought permission to speak with the players from their clubs (enslavers in Masch's case) then proceeded to sort out most of the details with the players and their agents. All that was left for Parry to do was rubber stamp the moves. He went and had a moan to the owners about Rafa going over his head and when Rafa did it again with Kaladze all hell broke loose.

It's clear he and Rafa don't get on. Apparently he had Rafa waiting around to sign his first contract with us while he was off playing golf. Rafa's been quoted as saying in the past with Parry all that gets done is "talk, talk, talk", there's never any action. Rafa's had deals agreed for Simao, Alves, Vidic, Evra and Malouda. On each occasion Parry has dragged his feet or tried to negotiate the fee down and we've lost out as a result. The Alves one was particularly bad because a fee of £12m had been agreed, £8m up front and £4m paid over two years and Parry tried negotiating it down to £8m. We ended up with Pennant.

Balague and Bascombe have both written articles about the problems between them. Balague gave a couple of really good interviews on Spanish radio talking about the Alves fuck up in particular.

All of the above only applies to the transfer market. I've not touched on his complete ineptitude at handling the club as a brand after Istanbul. We could have secured investment back then, probably even financed the stadium through a sponsorship deal or something. But we were only interested in 30% investment and releasing a Champions of Europe DVD. ;)

Obviously us fans aren't made privy to all of the ins and outs of how the club is run, but from seeing so many deals collapse, reading articles and watching/listening to interviews from those in the know, such as Balague and Bascombe, the conclusion many Liverpool fans have come to is: Parry is a clown.

He's known as a bit of a cunt as well. I've posted before that one of my Uni mate's Dad is Liverpool team doctor. Well, according to the whole family he's a slimy only has time for the people above him sort, and won't even acknowledge the likes of them. How is he still at the club?

How Parry has managed to hold on to his position for all these years is slightly baffling. As we both said many moons ago, where the hell is Foster Gillet?

Blimey. I didn't know that.

Vidic is a monster, Evra I have a lot of time for and Malouda is class imo. I think injury has curtailed him this season? Ashame as he had an awesome start.

And Pennat over Alves...oh deary deary me.

In his office next door to Rafa's. What he actually does is lost on me, though. Because it's clearly not what we thought he'd be doing, which was taking Parry's place. ;)

Jurgen Klinsmann will take over as coach of Bayern Munich next season, the club have announced.

Bayern have turned to Klinsmann after Ottmar Hitzfeld revealed he would be stepping down as the club's manager at the end of the season.

Klinsmann spent two successful years at Bayern during his illustrious playing career, helping them win the Uefa Cup and Bundesliga.

The former Tottenham striker has been out of work since quitting as Germany coach at the end of the 2006 World Cup.

"Former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann will take over on 1st July, 2008," said a statement on the club's official website.

The news ends speculation linking Klinsmann with a possible move to Liverpool as a replacement for Rafa Benitez.

He needs it, so good for him. He was never going to develop further whilst Mascherano was here, and I actually think he can get better, regardless of what others think. I hope he does well and I don't think it will be detrimental for us with him leaving, so it's good for all involved. Except Everton. :P

Told you Mourinho wouldn't go there. :P

At least we can rule out seeing Klinsmann here next season.

As for Momo: It's a real shame because he could have been great here. Masch is just too good and his development has been severely stunted as a result. Injuries didn't exactly help his cause either. I think he'll grow into a fine player and in years to come Juventus will consider the fee they paid us to be a bargain.

I still maintain his performance against Barca at the Nou Camp was probably the standout performance from a Liverpool player last season.

Unfortunate for us as Jose will be linked more heavily with Rafa's job now. I'm still not convinced Mourinho is destined for AC Milan.

i agree mate. He was immense in that game! :P

I think he will turn out to be a great midfield battler I just don't see the point of us keeping him when we have Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard and now Lucas in the centre of midfield. Yes he brings something different than all of those players but he appears to need to play week in week out to actually show his worth. It aint' gonna happen and it would be to the detriment of the team to put him ahead of at least 3 of the players I have mentioned.

Good luck to him but don't go to Aston Villa, Man U or Everton!

What do guys think about Sissoko leaving?

Hopefully we'll agree a fee for Mascherano when he's sold, which would allow me to breathe a sign of relief. Sissoko was good for us, but unfortunately for him he's been replaced by a better player.

Also:

Former Germany boss and World Cup winner Jurgen Klinsmann will take over as coach of Bayern Munich next season.

Thank god for that! Now that stupid speculation can just go away.

Liverpool have today confirmed the signing of Slovakian international defender Martin Skrtel from Zenit St Petersberg on a four and a half year contract.

The established centre half has 15 international caps for his country and Reds boss Rafael Benitez is predicting a bright Anfield future for the 23-year-old.

"I think he is a player maybe not many people know about but he played against Everton for Zenit St Petersberg, and he is a centre half that knows the English style," said Benitez.

"He is aggressive, quick, is good in the air and I think he's a very good player for the future and also for the present.

"He is very competitive, but his mentality for me is very good. Watching him in some games his mentality is similar to Carra so I think it's very positive for the team."

The Reds boss also believes Skrtel is a player who will settle quickly into life at Anfield and put pressure on the likes of Jamie Carragher, Sami Hyypia and Daniel Agger for a starting role in the first team.

"He has quality and he can be a problem for them and a good problem for me if I need to decide who to play in the future," added Benitez.

"He has experience and enough quality for playing as soon as possible."

Skrtel will wear squad number 37 at Anfield.

Leaving squad number 2 free for a new left back :P

Today's team:

I'd be so so pleased with a no-nonsense 2-0 win today, so pleased. Come on boys!

As a side note, I beat that exact team with my Athletico side on Football Manager last night 5-0 in the return leg of the UEFA Cup Semi-Final :)

Also didn't someone mention Van der Vaart a while back? I really think we should take a gamble on him if he is available, imagine a front 3 on VdV, Torres and Babel a few years down the line, frightening :)

Only to return in a even more ridiculous form. I never thought for one minute that he was a legitimate contender, his name just seems to being out about to incite speculation (to sell papers) or push him for jobs he'd never be considered for (it's pretty lol to be up for england, then liverpool within a 2 week gap).
