The old Man Utd Thread

Presumably any contract he signs will have a clear release clause... buuuuut he won't leave on a free at least. His position as our number 1 this season would've been undisputed either way, but it would've been a bit awkward if he was definitely going at the end of the season and everyone knew it. Obviously my hope is that he will quite like his new salary, and decides that he wants to stick around for a while longer.

It's pretty funny seeing the reactions to this. It seems the only thing people like more than us getting egg in our face is Real Madrid getting egg in their face.

I can only see the De Gea contract situation being another embarrassing step for the club. Woodward will probably offer him less than his current deal and he'll laugh it off and we'll be seen as fucking idiots again. He should be up there on Rooney's pay scale, ok give Rooney £5k more if you must, but he has been our most important player over the past 2 years and should be compensated accordingly. If we offer anything close to this level I'd be staggered, if he actually signed I'd be ecstatic and possibly have a heart attack.

The rumoured amount is £200k though, more than enough. It was never about the money.

I fully expect him to sign the contract and then leave for Real at a later date. The good thing is we'll be getting some money if/when he does go.

Yep was just about to post that he will definitely sign because he would lose millions sitting in his old contract.

£11.75m according to Samuel Luckhurst, that's a chunk of change to be missing out on AND it tests Real's resolve whether they really want him or not next season.

I thought he was banking on Real giving him a big (at least comparable) signing on bonus for lack of needing a big transfer fee? Oh well. Interesting times, I wonder if the deal will still happen, lots can change in most of a season.

This is an excellent result for us. I'm not at all convinced he wants to stay for more than a year but at least Madrid will have to shell out some serious cash to get him. Easily world record numbers for a goalkeeper. And we get to keep him more in a more settled state for another year. It's win-win really.

I'm sure I said somewhere, but I still don't think Real will actually want him after the mess of this summer. He'll be a constant reminder of it whilst he's there and if he starts badly they'll be a laughing stock in Spain.

I'd put a reasonably sized bet on them bidding for Courtois in January.

EDIT: Pending injury status in other thread.

Not sure the transfer fee will be any more than it was this year. It's pretty obvious he'll have a Real Madrid release clause in there at a reasonable price. He wouldn't have signed otherwise. It happened with us and Suarez for example. In the meantime, he boosts his wages and his situation within the team is settled. It's good for United he stays another year, but any thoughts of bigger fees or him staying beyond that doesn't really make sense.

Define reasonable? United were trying to hold out for a world record GK fee when he only had one year left. They're definitely going to use this to bolster their position, they're not going to pass up the chance to squeeze more out of RM and just accept the same fee for a player on a 4 year contract than one with a year left.

It's going to be at least a world record for a GK (which is still 'only' 32 million).

Don't really get that it doesn't make sense.

I can see him having more than 1 season or its s world record fee or part ex next season.

Armed with a 4 year contract there's no chance Man U will lose out next summer. It will be world record.

I don't really understand the reason for De Gea signing a new contract, unless it is, in fact, about the money OR because he does intend to stay there for a few more years. Because all he's done is made his transfer harder to push through; release clause or not, he could have gone for free and been promised megabucks by Madrid. I know loyalty in footballers only really exists for the fans these days, but the turnaround from him is a little odd.

It's a great result for you guys though, because you'll get good money for him when he does go and, more importantly, you have your best player back in the side.

As long as we don't constantly go long just because Fellaini is on the pitch. If he is the focal point, I doubt he will get as much space as he usually does when pushed up behind the striker anyway. Depay will have to be playing very high up, and given license to make runs beyond big Felli for this XI to make any sense.
