The old Man Utd Thread

The defence is much more solid than last season, so losing De Gea now will not be such a blow. Arguably we would miss his distribution more than his shot stopping. Happy to have Romero as the number one, Lindegaard as the backup (he seems happy to stay and has performed well previously when given a chance). We can long for an option for the long term next summer. It would be a strange decision to turn down £16m or whatever it will be just to keep a goalkeeper, no matter how good they happen to be, for one season.

He slipped for the penalty, can happen to anyone. I can't forgive the 2yd miss, no matter how much Captain Charisma (Owen) tried to defend the chance.

But I have been impressed with his general play this season (in the short time he's been given), making good runs, getting into free space and his first touch has looked good. I'm not going to judge him on a penalty slip and a tap in when the game was long done and dusted.

Can't see Januzaj hanging onto his starting place for much longer. Not really doing much with his opportunities, he's starting to look like a one season wonder to me.

I'll be honest, I don't rate Januzaj much. He's still young granted, but I really do think he would benefit going out on loan somewhere (not Sunderland) to develop. Other than a few flourishes of his ability here and there and a few games in his debut season that he's been dining off, he doesn't contribute an awful lot. Herrera moved further forward in the second half did more in 20 minutes by scoring and getting an assist.

Decent draw for the group stages, can't be too unhappy with that. Swansea at the weekend who are pretty handy and took 6 points off us last season. Montero will give Darmian or Shaw a game with his pace, Gomis as well up against Smalling and Blind. The latter I felt has been doing a great job of marshalling the back-line. Obviously sterner tests to come, but I think we'll see the team we saw in the second half on Sunday, maybe with Schneiderlin in for Carrick and Herrera for Januzaj.

I was watching a Canadian stream of the match the other night and they highlighted a moment where Januzaj received the ball in acres of space which Rooney running ahead of him, and he immediately turned back and dallied on the ball. A number 10 needs attacking instincts and vision. He needs more development and game time. To continue with him at 10 when we have Mata and even Rooney who excel there is madness.

Well, I certainly agree he should be on the wing, with Mata playing at 10, but I suspect there are defensive reasons why that isn't happening. Januzaj needs to improve in his decision-making, but he certainly has the skills to be a good player. We have to remember he's still a very young and inexperienced, and things like decision-making ability will only come with experience. If we stick with him, he might or might not end up as a world-class attacking midfielder. If we abandon him into the reserves, he definitely won't.

You can doubt Januzaj, but the fact is he's our joint top-scorer in the league this season, along with Kyle Walker.

Well that doesn't mean much at the moment does it.

What it's worth, I do like him as a player. I watched a lot of him in the u18's and reserves so I've seen what he's capable of. The problem is, he's most suited to the #10 role. I just don't think he's ready for it in the first team on a regular basis yet.

Yeah. The money gained from both the fee and wages recouped over the length of the contract left will be £10m or more. A great deal of dead wood has been cleared from the squad over the last few windows, and as many of these players had no place in Van Gaal's plans, the main thing is to just get them off our books. Besides, I don't really think it's a bad fee given he's only got one year left on his contract, plus he's had ongoing issues with form and fitness for a while now. It strikes me as a fair valuation.

Watching Sunday Supplement and one of the journalists on says he's been told we're happy with what we've got. Unless we have a Falcao-style surprise up our sleeves, I don't see us bringing anyone else in between now and Tuesday.

Yeah, that seems increasingly likely to be the case. All we're hearing is pie-in-the-sky stuff like Bale and Neymar, plus the will-he-won't he over De Gea.

I agree we need defensive cover, and possibly a striker, although that might cause problems as Rooney at 10 can unhinge the team.

I think De Gea will go, and I think that has been the plan all along, and the reason he hasn't been playing. I think we've dropped him and are blaming the player being "unfocused" so the fans aren't as angry when he is sold. The rhetoric will be about how we played it tough with Madrid but the player forced the move.
