The old Man Utd Thread

Yeah, it was decent to watch. But, I don't think it'd be that easy against even a half decent opposition.

Still, glad we got that third goal. Should make next week's game a bit easier.

Great result in the end, but we were a bit lucky as well. That goal Bruges scored when Romero was fannying around should have stood. I don't reckon the striker who came in to challenge Romero fouled him.

We gave away a lot of chances by making mistakes, there was a lot of self-inflicted damage. We did look a lot better going forward, though. We need to start putting together both the attacking and defensive sides of the game.

Come on, yes Romero was fannying about, I can't even come close to condoning why he took so long and then didn't clean house, but he WAS fouled, you can't stand on someone's foot and get away with it. Plus, he and the defence had stopped, leading to the ball trickling through them. We weren't lucky, we fully deserved a 2 goal margin.

There wasn't that many mistakes, but the ones that were there were stark in comparison to the fluidity of the rest of the play. We can always do better, it was only an injury-depleted Brugges after all, but I didn't see anything to worry us for future games...Maybe Romero's composure would be the only issue.

Well, then there's Rooney. Van Gaal defending him saying that everyone was calling for him to play as striker and now they don't want him. I don't think it's as simple as that. Naming Rooney as the sole striker is one thing, getting him to play there is another. He comes too deep and too wide to get involved in the play, but then leaves no one up top. A good number 9 would be good a foil for Rooney, but if Rooney doesn't play as the sole striker, I don't think he'll displace anyone else from that team.

In saying that I thought Chico did well when he came on, lots of pace and energy and finding good channels to run into. His first touch looked improved as well. He didn't even get flagged offside once! :o I hope he gets a good few games this season.

It looks pretty certain he will, considering we don't have anyone else who can play there other than Rooney and Wilson.

Rooney did okay at times. That flick to Memphis to create the chance he blazed over was lovely.

I'm just not sure he can play that role anymore. When was it he did so well there, and scored all those goals? 2011-12? I just don't think he's got the athleticism to do that now. I said last week I reckon he's been given a weird, oddly negative role to play, where he occupies the centre-backs and lets the midfielders do the attacking. Presumably LVG is hoping he'll supplement that with his own bits of magic, Like that'll happen on it's own without the team adapting to Rooney's game at all.

So the Pedro deal is dead in the water now with LVG apparently pulling the plug on the deal.

Personally think we've arsed around with this one, Chelsea stepped in offered what Barcelona wanted. Player prefers London to Manchester so we brief the media with the news that we've 'dropped interest'. Poor on our part.

Doubt we'll see anyone else come in now, so we are still lacking the type of player LVG wants who is quick and creative. Muller keeps cropping up but that won't happen.

Jesus, it's all willy-waving with Woodward, isn't it? If he's not paying huge fees for big names who aren't right for the club, or making massive offers for players he knows we're never going to get, he's haggling over payment structures for a player who wanted to join us, in a misguided attempt to play hardball with the Spanish big two. This is a right cock-up. FFS it's not as if Muller fits the bill as a quick, creative player. He's top quality, but he's not quick, or particularly skillful.

The silver lining is that presumably this might mean that Januzaj gets more of a chance. I'd rather that than we bring in new signings anyway.

I'm annoyed about the Otamendi situation, though.

I don't think we didn't get him because we wanted to pay €5m in instalments. I can only assume that either the manager changed his mind and wants to leave a way for some of the younger/fringe players. Or he's got someone else in mind.

Pedro will do well at Chelsea I'm sure although it's not an area that I thought they'd be buying to improve.
