The old Man Utd Thread

Rooney is being nullified by his specific role in the side. He wasn't great, but the role he's being asked to play is what he did against Man City last season, just occupying the centre backs and take up specific positions between them. It's a weird role for a player like him.

I dunno about that interview by LVG. He was very harsh on Januzaj and Memphis for giving the ball away cheaply. Do we want players who are going to make things happen or not? You need your flair players to have some license to take risks otherwise there's not much point playing them. If we could clone Carrick and Schweinsteiger and play them in every position we wouldn't give the ball away, but we wouldn't win many games either. LVG is a conservative coach, and we might have to get used to those players with a bit of magic about them getting sidelined.

I did hope for more from LvG in terms of style I guess. I know it's only two games into the new season and there's still gelling to be done but he seems constantly suspicious of flair players, and it's not like the majority of last season led us to believe much different. I feel like his end game is to build a solid, workmanlike side with lots of possession and little risk. Which is fine if it gets us places in the short term I guess, but it's hard to get too excited about it all. The days of blistering counter attacks and exciting games seems a long time ago.

He's just doing what most seasoned managers would do, mitigating all the risk to ensure he gets a result. Mourinho does the same, unattractive but effective.

It's not going to be flair football until he has a string of results and points behind him. He has a very specific job to do and will have made it clear to the players that they have to conform. Whilst the players themselves will need some familiarity and continuity with one another before they open up their game.

It's no bad thing if we grind out the results for a few months, it will build the confidence and start attracting talent again.

Think this is probably our best team as of now

Depay Rooney Januzaj Herrera Schneiderlin CarrickShaw Darmian Blind Smalling Romero

Could drop Depay or Rooney and bring Mata in, and possibly not really play a recognised striker. I hope the 4-2-3-1 goes away soon, it has so many bad knock on effects all over the pitch. Principally, it makes the wingers and fullbacks do more defending. The likes of Depay, Januzaj and Mata would all benefit from having a bit more positional freedom, safe in the knowledge that if they roam inside the fullback will move up to stretch the play. I can't see Herrera and Fellaini particularly being as useful in this new system either, it just doesn't seem to be playing to the strengths of our squad.

probably this on form + captain perogative

Rooney Januzaj Mata Schweinsteiger Herrera Schneiderlin Shaw Darmian Blind Smalling Romero

then switch herrera and mata around. Rooney needs to sort his shit out and quickly.

Aside from his goal, I didn't think Adnan had a good game, so easily knocked off the ball. Needs to build up a bit of muscle.

We were solid defensively, especially considering most were expecting Gestade to target Blind, which didn't happen at all. Schneiderlin was good again, sniffing out any danger. Memphis was okay, should've scored that opportunity in the second half though. Mata was decent. Rooney was anonymous and pretty sure if we had a better alternative on the bench, that's where he'd be.

More than ever it's a point's driven business. Same thing happened at Chelsea last season (or season before, I forget). Once Moaninho figured out he didn't want to get beat rather than lose every week he changed the style to suit. Point's first, entertainment second I'm afraid.

Yeah but we used to have both. For many years under Fergie we were both the most entertaining team to watch and the best. I do accept that we were fantastically privileged to be able to witness that and that it isn't the norm though. I feel very lucky to have grown up through that era of the club.

Januzaj seems to have impressed a few but I thought he was disappointing other than his goal. Depay missing his 'easy chance' aside really is the only real threat I feel, with Mata the only one seemingly capable of a penetrating pass. Going forward its not much to shout about but its nice to look solid in midfield and at the back for a change. Ideally I'd like Mata centrally but then we don't really have anyone else for the right. Pedro or someone else is needed I feel.

Schneiderlin has impressed me massively. Looks to be a quality signing and should get better as he settles.

I thought you needed BT TV to watch champions league stuff? I've BT broadband but not BT TV and can view this match just fine :)

Caveat: we do tend to lose when I watch us though.

You can watch it, the question is whether you've found yourself paying an additional £5/month..

Channel 414 on Sky. Now I'm making us lose.

I wish they'd release an app for the Xbox. I have Infinity, but no way of watching it on my TV.

Yes, yes, but I checked my bill at the weekend and they're charging me an extra £5 for it from this month onwards. I was unaware of this fee being introduced.

Pissed off at first but the app is pretty good and they have put my money towards killing ITV...
