The old Man Utd Thread

The Guardian are reporting that PSG have bid £28.5m for Di Maria. :hmm:

Apparently, due to the strength of the pound against the Euro, if PSG paid the 65m euros (£46.05m) that has been widely quoted, United's overall loss on the deal would actually be less that £10m. This offer, however, is taking the piss.

Haha! Is if we're going to accept that. I mean, why would we take such a huge loss when we don't even want to sell him. Surely we should be in the driving seat. Personally I wouldn't sell him at any loss and just let PSG keep pong their offer if they really want him.

It's pretty much a given Di Maria is off. LVG doesn't know where he is. Blanc says a deal is close.

A 2-0 loss to PSG in the early hours, Darmian and Shaw impressing, our CBs less so. I can't believe we are going into a new season with a soft centre again.

Didn't City offer £25m for Sterling before buying him for £49m?

That's what I mean. It's a seller's market. If he's off then so be it, but we should definitely make PSG squirm over the price.

I can't believe he still hasn't met up with the squad. Such unprofessional behaviour. I hope LvG shows him up to be the dick he obviously is.

He could easily be saying it to placate fans who might otherwise be wondering why the club are about to sell one of their few potential match winners at a hefty loss after just 12 months. Make Di Maria seem deeply unprofessional so that any anger is directed at the player and not the club.

Not saying that's the case, but it would hardly be the first time a club has turned a bit nasty in the PR war with a disgruntled player.

I think it would be very naive to believe that Van Gaal has literally no idea where Di Maria is just because he says that. There's not necessarily "mind games" but he 100% knows what's going on and for whatever reason he doesn't want to give the press the story.

We were clearly a stop-gap till PSG were able to buy him. It was quite often a known situation that Real didn't want him anymore and PSG couldn't afford him due to FFP, so we were the only team able to afford him at the time.

I think LVG's "don't know where he is" is simply saving face for the club, since it looks massively embarrassing having our record signing leave after one season and taking a £15m hit on it as well (£44m is the rumoured fee). PSG must be laughing their bollocks off. As for Di Maria, it was obvious in the Hull game last season he really did not give a single fuck, so I as much as I admire his ability, his attitude fucking stinks.

Take the Sterling / Liverpool scenario, at least he came out and said that he didn't want to be at the club and Liverpool ensured City paid top whack for a player with potential. Us on the other hand, we're being taken for mugs again.

For all of the Woody / Wolf of Wall Street memes, it'll mean fuck all losing Di Maria and De Gea in the same window and not replacing either. We've addressed the midfield, full back and wide position, but we desperately need a quality centre-back.

A £15m loss isn't that bad. It won't be that much as that for starters as some of the fee we payed was with add-ons that won't have been met. And he's a year older and been shit for a year.

Plus who even cares about the money. £15m is nothing to the club in the grand scheme.

While both necessary, it does hurt to see two (our only two?) genuinely world class players leave at the same time.

I think our squad is, on balance, stronger than last season but it's definitely distinctly less glitzy. Might be a good thing in the end.

Supposing that the report (and photos showing him in Doha) are true, I'm glad that the situation with Di Maria is reaching a conclusion. Still a tad disappointed that we are letting him go after one season, I have the feeling that he'll do a Fellaini and come good if he'd stayed...

Towards the end of Fergie's reign he was definitely one of the best right backs in the league. He had some fitness issues but that can't fully explain why he was frozen out in favour of Valencia by Van Gaal, he just never rated him it seems. Lyon have got an absolute bargain, he's only 25 and his best years are ahead of him. Darmian looking quality lessens the blow, but it's still disappointing to see someone leave who's been at the club for so long, and has an obvious love for the place. It's like Anderson leaving except we're actually losing a good player.

Fabio is now a regular starter for Cardiff and I think there's every chance he'll be back in the premier league eventually. I hope Rafael does as well at his new club.
