The old Man Utd Thread

But Valdes is more than capable of being our next long term No. 1. Look at his pedigree! We've an excellent keeper on the books that we didn't pay a penny for, doesn't make sense to go looking elsewhere to me.

It's not me you have to convince! Judging by all the rumours, it looks like a new keeper would come in if De Gea was to leave for Madrid.

Cavani is not better than Rooney. What a ludicrous statement. On his day Cavani can be unstoppable but mostly he looks like he's got 2 left feet. He was dreadful at the world cup.

You seen Rooney in the last two seasons? Fits and spurts of form and then bang average the rest. I think Cavani is a better striker, personally.

id rather spunk a load more money on Lawandowski

Me too! Papers saying €50m, bargain.

Are Bayern really getting rid so soon? He had a decent-ish first season didn't he?

I'm not sure if they're getting rid or not. He bagged 25 goals in all competitions last season so didn't do too bad!

When they're talking about Benteke at £32.5m (who I like as a player too) then a bit more for Lawandowski (if hes available) sounds like a good deal.

It has to be paper talk, doesn't it? The 50m quote comes from his agent, but I'm not sure if that makes it more or less plausible. If we could get him for that, we should definitely do it.

Imagine, Lewandowski for less money than Sterling. Bargain.

Liverpool have done a proper number on City there.

Press Conference in session at the moment. If it were an episode of Game of Thrones, it'd be the Red Wedding. LVG dropping journos left and right.

On Valdes:

"LVG says he is now selling him (Valdes) and is disappointed after helping him with his rehab and giving him a new contract."

On Di Maria:

Are you confident he (Di Maria) will be here next season? "We shall see". It's a process for Di Maria and United. I count with him as he is still a member of United and he'll come 25th July.

On Rafael:

Van Gaal damning on Rafael when discussing Darmian: 'at right-back you have to defend'. He wanted to sell Rafael last year. #mufc

Yeah, he pretty much ordered taxis for Valdes and Rafael. Told Percy he was being sold at the end of last season. He wants Di Maria to stay, but it's up to the player and whether a deal could be done.

The Sergio Romero rumours look like they are carrying some weight. He was with LVG at AZ.

Under the assumption ADM stays and we sign Otamendi and Romero, we would have an Argentine presence to rival the Spanish lads.

Valdes has hit back. This is getting ugly, I don't like us washing our dirty laundry in public. I've always thought very highly of Valdes and surely everyone has a soft spot for Rafael. I know I shouldn't be this bothered about a reserve GK and RB being shoved out the back door, but it really doesn't sit well with me at all.

I like Rafael, regardless of his impetuous tendencies he always gave his all even at times when no-one around him looked arsed (e.g latter Moyes months) and he was a better attacking RB than Valencia imo. Bit sad to see him being treated badly. Van Gaal can be a bit of a twat at times to be honest.

Rafael is a loveable character and a good player but the one thing that's let him down is his fitness. We just haven't been able to rely on him for any length of time throughout his time here. I'd still prefer to keep him, he's a better player than Valencia who I think is weaker when it comes to positioning in the full back area.

I don't think LvG has treated him badly though, that quote when above Bleeders reads bad but on hearing it seems he's just saying that's Darmian does and that what he expects. Thats how I took it anyway!

1-0 win over Club America earlier this morning, Schneiderlin with the goal after 5 minutes. The new guys acquitted themselves well, particularly Schneiderlin who had a decent first half.

We definitely need a new CB and a Striker though. Speaking of which, LVG noted we could spring a "surprise" on that front.

Pedro would be wonderful but only remotely necessary if Di Maria is off. He can't be seen as cover for Rooney, even though he has played well centrally for Barca when Suarez has been injured, because of the obvious difference in the physical requirements for the role in England. We're stacked on the wings, and there's no point signing a player who's moving to get games if we can't give them to him.

They seem to be just gathering momentum in Paris though. I think this all depends on the player wanting to go or not and Utd recouping some of that large, record fee. Pedro as a replacement and then another striker joining would be a nice consolation though.

We have to be at least looking for one. I guess there's not many good ones out there that are available. And getting a top tier striker means either captain Rooney or new super signing would miss out in the preferred system. Or even worse, seeing Rooney shoehorned into midfield.

Going into the season with Rooney and Wilson wouldn't really fill me with confidence for the season ahead though. I suppose there's still a possibility that Hernandez will stick around and provide another option.

There is no way Rooney is going to play in midfield with Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Depay coming in is there?

I bloody hope not!

I was just thinking out loud. If we do sign a top quality striker, he's going to want to be first choice and in LvG preferred system/philosophy that means probably only one striker. So either Rooney or the new striker misses out. Or,the new striker goes up top with Rooney in midfield which was what I was saying.

But yeah, no Rooney in midfield please.

There has apparently been a surge in betting on Gareth Bale making a £95m move to United.

It's probably people reading too much into that mention of a surprise. The more I think about LVG saying that, the more I think it's a dig at Ed Woodward. I reckon the Falcao signing last season came as a surprise to LVG and he's making a veiled reference to that. Of course us excitable fans have interpreted it as meaning we're signing some big name or other. Why sign someone who plays in the same position as your biggest signing of the summer, before they've even made their debut?

Still, it would be brilliant. :)
