The old Man Utd Thread

That was very quick indeed. Four in and ready to fly out. Great stuff!

Again, yes.

That's fair enough, optimism is great and obviously you'd know a great deal more about the state of United than I do. All I can say is that from the outside looking in, United seem to be very strong and have great depth in midfield (and a strong keeper if you hang on to De Gea), but everywhere else are as weak (or weaker) than they were last season. You have 17 points to make up on Chelsea and you're strengthening in all the wrong places. It looks ace on paper, but I'm not sure how much it improves your results on the pitch beyond what you had. It's like watching Arsenal's transfer windows for the last ten years. We needed defenders and a goalkeeper and Wenger bought attacking midfielders. Signing Ozil was exciting as hell but we continued to ship a fuckload of goals and so we were never going to challenge for the league.

Again though, you'd know better than me so prove me wrong at your leisure!

Um, what. We badly needed to strengthen in central midfield and right back, and we have done. The only potential luxury signing is Depay, but he has really been signed for his potential as much as anything. We probably also need to sign a central defender and a keeper (or two) but I'm not worried about that. Can't do everything in one day.

Where is everyone going to fit?!

Our depth at central midfield was still very weak before today. Plenty of games for everyone.

A top quality CB and that's our shopping done I reckon. Will be quite the line up on paper. I don't think we'll move for a forward, there's Rooney, Depay, Di Maria and Fellaini to play up top.

It wasn't a coincidence that our form tailed off after Carrick went off injured against City last season. We've addressed that with Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin now.

We're well stocked on the wings with Depay, Di Maria, Mata, Young, Valencia and Januzaj. The latter I could see being sent out on loan.

We need a CB and a Striker though. Possibly a GK as well if Dave moves.

I think we'll sign a striker but I am not convinced we need one. I'd certainly rather see a quality CB come in which is desperately needed. Now we actually have a midfield, Rooney won't have to play there and LVG clearly rates Wilson. As ckny says we have other options in Depay and Fellaini as well. Can't believe LVG sorted in one afternoon what Fergie and Moyes have tried to sort for about the last five or six years.

Well yeah, like I said, you guys'd know better than me. To me as an outsider it appeared that you had a good midfield which was being very badly managed. The players weren't the issue, it was how those players were being used, and so adding new players doesn't feel like the way the problem needed to be solved. Maybe it'll work, it'll probably work, but your need for competent defenders seemed more pressing.

I'm really looking forward to the coming season now we've done some good business. Ideally I'd like to see another striker, who's more in the RvP mould than Rooney as we all know his form has peaks and troughs throughout the season. Somebody who can poach some goals if things aren't going our way would be the perfect foil to Rooney's more methodical approach. It's all pretty exciting though and if things click, I can see us challenging for the title this year.

I'm excited to see how the lads do on the current tour, just to see how the newcomers fit and how LVG will further evolve the team tactically. Nonetheless, if last summer's visit to the US was anything to go by, a good tour wouldn't be an accurate reflection of how the season will pan out.

Next step on LVG's to-do list is probably to sort out the Academy and youth development, I'd say.

Don't know what to make of the GK situation. Valdes not going to America tells us he's going. So is Dave staying? If he's staying just for the year then leaving on a free wouldn't it make sense to Valdes around?

Valdes isn't a long term replacement as the number 1 I don't think, so regardless of what happens with De Gea I think Valdes would be the backup. Madrid papers are now talking about De Gea joining on a free next year so looks like we're sticking to our guns in terms of the fee we're asking for.

I'd hate to lose Di Maria after just one season, even if it's in-exchange for Cavani as rumoured.

Yeah, be a bit a shit to lose him after such a good transfer window thus far. He's still got something to prove to I'd be surprised if he'd jump ship after 1 season, not to mention our record fee signing. I wouldn't mind Cavani though, I like him and he's better than Rooney but not at the expense of Di Maria.

But Valdes is more than capable of being our next long term No. 1. Look at his pedigree! We've an excellent keeper on the books that we didn't pay a penny for, doesn't make sense to go looking elsewhere to me.
