The old Man Utd Thread

According to the Guardian, Real offered just 18 million Euros for De Gea - about 12 million quid. If we sell him for anywhere near that I'll be fucking furious, last year of his contract or not. I'd rather keep him for another year than sell him for that.

Assuming you're losing him either way, and it's a near-certainty at this point that you are, wouldn't it make sense to do it now? No matter which outfield players you sign this summer, the chances of you winning the league next season are very slim. Surely in that case you'd want to get a new keeper in now, get them a season of Premier League football under their belt when it doesn't matter as much, and then be ready to challenge the season after? Hanging on to De Gea out of spite will potentially cost you £12m and an experienced keeper the season after when the rest of your team has come together properly.

Word is we want to swap DDG + £££ for Ramos?! We're getting shafted if that's true. Ramos would get 5 red cards a season in England and is 29. Fuck that.

Still a much better CB than we have at the moment. Would still prefer Otamendi tbh.

So when is the season going to matter? Crazy logic - we finished fourth and need to be aiming for the title now. De Gea can stay for another season or he can go for a high price. If Cech is worth £11 then De Gea is worth three times as much.

You finished fourth in a very, very weak league with a weak side. I guess you're right that everyone should always be aiming for the title but do you realistically think you could win it next season?

De Gea was the difference between finishing 4th and not finishing 4th. That's worth more to the club than a paltry 12 million quid. Hell, look at how much Liverpool fans want to extort for bloody Sterling in the last year of his contract when his net contribution is nowhere near what De Gea's has been.

It's not about keeping him out of spite, it's about whether the money we're being offered outweighs the many points De Gea will probably be worth again next year. 12 million for one of the best goalkeepers in the world with years ahead of him is a joke, last season on his contract or not.

Definitely. Schweinsteiger, Depay and perhaps a defensive signing and that's it.

I agree with Mr Do and AlwaysBeClosing, all United need are world-class (or close) new players at striker, centre-mid, right back, goalkeeper, centre back x2 and right wing - all settled - and they'll definitely have a shot at the title.

Seemingly credible rumours that Schneiderlin will be joining us soon, which would be an excellent signing. He'll offer some competition for Herrera in the box-to-box role, while providing something different as he's much more capable at winning the ball back and screening the defence. He'd also do fine as a makeshift defensive midfielder. I think it would be odd if he joined us and not Arsenal though, I think they need him more than we do, I've been surprised two summers running now that they haven't picked him up.

Hope we don't sign Ramos, though he's a great defender and gets goals at set pieces, his discipline is so poor. If the rumours are coming from his camp then he's probably just trying to get a better contract anyway, same with Schweinsteiger. Would rather we were trying to sign younger, hungry players who actually want to sign for us, rather than trying for established players at big clubs who clearly aren't going anywhere.

Wierd that the Gundogan rumours seem to have gone away completely after looking like a done deal. Some talk of him maybe going to Barca, and he'd fit in wonderfully there (especially with their slightly more direct style of play now) but they can't actually sign anyone this summer, and I doubt Dortmund would want him to go on a free.

I think the moment I stopped caring about the transfer window was when Man United bought Zaha and Kagawa and then proceeded to appear to not want them there at all. I think I don't like big squads with players coming in and out of the team for particular games, my attitude to a player under performing is not to replace them but improve the collective. I'm always frustrated by the last of trust and faith and patience shown to players, that someone as brilliant as Di Maria in his final Real Madrid season can go from most expensive Premier League signing ever to on the bench after a good start filled with assists and goals and a clear obvious class if anyone saw his debut against Burnley can attest to. I know, house burgled, confidence lost, etc. But no player (other than captain Rooney and De Gea) seems guaranteed a start and i'd prefer if there was at least a midfield core that could develop an understanding. Paul Sarahs on football phone in thinks Depay is as talented as people hope and his arrival will mean a move to 4-3-3 and less experimentation with wing backs.

I hate the turnover, mad dash for new players to fix some kind of problem that apparently will change everything. Like 'yeah, what United need is some pace! Di Maria is fast!' Now he's rubbish. Or 'Yeah what we need is a strong leader of a defender! Hummels!' Smalling has been alright. It's an exhausting approach to constantly pick at players that are so susceptible to losses of form and the understanding of those he's playing alongside. I hadn't given up on Cleverley and finally he improved, and I think he will excel at Everton, and they will be the most improved side from last season.

I guess injuries force the stockpiling of players, and I know, top sides need two good players for every position etc etc and a strong squad to cope with the games, but I'd rather the players coming in were youth players given a chance, like McNair, who was actually fantastic when he came in. The amount of injuries some players get makes me think maybe they weren't born to be an athlete.

I don't think I like anything about Mourinho except that his Chelsea team especially last season had a first 11 where every player offered something different, complimented each other, were balanced, made sense. I was amazed to learn that Terry had played every minute of every game. Mourinho still wastes talent like Cuadrado being ignored and Oscar too to an extent, so somewhere in between having a first strong 11 and subs that can change a game.

tldr I don't want Scheiderlein because Man United have Blind, and he doesn't need to play left back because there is Shaw, and i don't care if Rafael is hot headed and reckless, so is Ramos x10.

I might be alone in this but i don't want players who are so integrated at the club they're currently at, like Harry Kane is a Spurs player and I like watching him play for Spurs, there can be another player who plays for another team who is very effective in the league who doesn't need to be stolen. I didn't want Van Persie for the same reason, he was Arsenal to me and it felt wrong. Like I enjoyed the association, the loyalty, and despite getting a talent when players move too much it undermines that. It's a shame watching Fabregas at Chelea, because you know he doesn't care about the club and is only there to win. I like one club players, i don't want Schweinsteiger because he is Bayern, he's said in the past he only wants to play for one club, and Ramos is similar in representing their club, being the one constant amid all the change.

I'd rather United tried to develop players who go on to have the same prestige rather than desperately trying to grab others from top teams. Welbeck has hardly showed Van Gaal up after his dismissive comments, but neither has Falcao been worth it. I think homegrown players who represent the soul of a club are important and show a passion and commitment that others don't, you could see it in Ramos' last minute header in the Champions league final, you could see it in Welbeck, you can see it in Wilshere, and I don't think it's worth losing for any amount of money.

If United do play 4-3-3, I'd be happy with

...........valdes

rafael smalling, jones, shaw

herrera blind mata,

januzaj, wilson di maria

I'm not convinced by Blind in midfield. He worked well at left back and is fine as a utility player but do I want him playing Carrick's role on a permanent basis? Nah, Carrick's on a whole different level in that role. Passing, positioning, vision, screening the back 4. The difference in points between Carrick in midfield and Blind in midfield last season is startling. We need someone better to replace Carrick on a full time basis.

aaaand Gundogan is staying at Dortmund. Who saw that coming? Think Hummels will stay put too, and Reus has already signed. They're doing a great job of keeping their best players, considering that they had such an awful season and lost an inspirational manager.

Some of you lot are mental. You don't want Ramos because he's a bit mental? That's what we need, someone physical and dirty just like Vidic was. He's also amazing from set-pieces. Put this way, he's on another planet when compared to Jones, Smalling and Tyler fucking Blackett. I think he'd be a great signing and just what we need at the back.

He's protected at Madrid because a lot of decisions go their way, particularly at home. We used to have that when we had Vidic at his peak, but I doubt if we had a player of a similar vein now that they would fare as well. He's a better player than any of the defenders we have right now, true, but I don't see why we can't get someone who's younger, cheaper and will have less issues staying on a pitch for 90 minutes.

Otamendi is still a good shout, but I'd still take Ramos and his shit housery. He'd be our shit house. In anycase, I won't believe it till he's signed for us.

Schneiderlin is looking a possibility now and would be a good acquisition at that. Schweinsteiger I don't think will happen, although again, a player of his calibre would only benefit us I feel.

We seem to have been linked with pretty much everyone now. Anyone want to have some fun and predict where we'll be at the close of the transfer window? You can name three players you'll think will have joined, a wildcard and whether you think De Gea will still be at the club. Assume Darmian is a done deal:

My three: Otamendi, Schneiderlin and Cavani

Wildcard: Ronaldo

Dea Gea: No
