The old Man Utd Thread

We're very strong on the wings now. Got some nice variety too, with Young and Depay being relatively traditional wingers (pacey, with a goal threat), and Mata / Di Maria offering something different as they prefer to go looking for the ball and play others in. You expect that spells the end of Nani as a United player though, and Januzaj might see his chances reduced also... but I would prefer if he stuck around. As we will actually be in Europe next season there should be plenty of games to go around. If he does need to leave to get some playing time, I would like to see him at Everton perhaps.

I still think Nani is our best winger, I 'd love to see him given the chance in the current team to see if he can get back to those heights of 4 years or so ago. If Ashley Young can have a resurgence then I don't see why Nani can't.

 I think he has a bit more about him than that. Yes his decision making apparently needs some work, but he's 21 so that's not exactly surprising.

Hope we mix up the midfield a little today, I think if we play Fellaini behind the striker again Pardew will have a plan for that and we'll be frustrated. I know Di Maria has been poor but I would like to see him start centrally instead, with Herrera a little deeper. I think that will help mitigate Carrick being out a bit too, he can help Blind out there who's not as good at starting off moves, they can take turns attacking and cover for each other.

Louis van Gaal has talked a lot about his football ‘philosophy’ this season, but during Crystal Palace v Manchester United he apparently revealed that it’s just heavily based around wine.

The Dutchman revealed the contents of his all-important tactics folder during the match, which appeared to consisted of a wine brochure from merchants Farr Vintners.

To be fair, with managers known to share a glass after a match, LVG probably felt he had to come prepared given that he was taking on the connoisseur that is Alan Pardew.

And with United all but sealing Champions League qualification with a 2-1 victory, he’s got every right to get the drinks in early…

Farr Vintners is owned by one of the Palace owners (Steve Browett), he posts on a thread on our forum with wine recommendations etc.

We probably threw in a couple of free cases of wine when we wrote off the rest of the Zaha money to take him back ;)

Looking forward to quoting all those who scoffed at me in the Football Thread when I said we'd qualify for the Champions League at the start of the year.

Don't jinx it man. If, and it's a big if, Liverpool win today and next week, they'll only be a point behind us before we play. Our game against Arsenal will be a tough one, that we could quite easily lose if we play the way we have been for the last month. Leaving it to go down to the last game of the season.

6 points ahead of 5th, 2 games to go, but with a massive GD swing needed by Liverpool. I think we can rest easy now. Not a vintage season by any means, and I think 3rd is probably beyond us now, but I'd have taken 4th place after the disaster that was last season. Hopefully we can get the bulk of our business done early enough to get a proper pre-season under everyones belts and push for the total next year.

Januzaj scored in a 4-0 win for the under 21s against City last night. Still think he'll go out on loan next season. Lots of talk about a deal for Dani Alves being close.

Good game it was too, and Wilson scored a nice goal as well.

I've seen reports of that in a few places. Strikes me as an odd call if true, Alves in his pomp was a magnificent full back but I'm not sure that, aged 32, he's got the legs to handle LVG's wing back role - on the assumption he persists with trying to implement that formation next season.

Anyway you look at it, a 32 year old Dani Alves is still a better RB than anyone we have right now.

Also, lots of media reports that David De Gea has agreed personal terms with Real Madrid. That can fuck right off!

It's been inevitable for a while that De Gea will go, I just hope Real spunk a ton of cash to make it worthwhile. A quick Google says the current GK transfer record is only 32 million. I'd hope for at least a good 10-15 million more than that for a world class keeper with years ahead of him to be honest.
