The old Man Utd Thread

Was about to post that. Sources fairly reliable too, woop woop. I believe he doesn't have any fitness worries currently, but hasn't really hit his pre-injury form (but that could just be because Dortmund have collapsed this season). I think he would be an ideal signing, he's still only 24 and I've no doubt he's got his best years ahead of him. May have a hard time muscling out Fellaini for the number 10 position though.

I'm reading that we're quite fair along with Depay also. I'd be happy leaving it there as far as attacking transfers go, we probably need another defensive or box-to-box midfielder (only for cover though), as well as a centre back (assuming one leaves) and a right back (only because Rafael played so few games this season).

If you actually sign Gündoğan, Depay and Hummels and they all deliver, you'll be a real handful next season.

(And yeah I know I normally slate Hummels and I stand by my view that he's slow and error prone, but he's good in the air and a very good passer from the back which it seems you could do with).

We're in the nice position where we actually look like we only need a tweak or two, but seem to be bringing in a truckload of new signings anyway. Van Gaal obviously has the owners' trust, and we have money to spend, so this might be the first coherent post-Ferguson transfer window we have.

ABC I think De Gea leaving is more likely than any of us would really like to admit. Madrid clearly want him, and they usually get what they want. No-one is reporting anything except the fact that both clubs are throwing a great deal of money at him to choose them though. It'll just be down to come the end of the season, what he thinks is best for his career and his life, and that's relatively hard to predict. He looks like he's very happy at the club and in Manchester, but I would've said the same of Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was always expected to depart, what with him coming out and regularly stating that he'd be going there. David is so young and has friends at the club from what we can tell. There's a nice Spanish contingent also so it's not like he's left out - definitely would like to see him with the captain's armband in the future, as little as that matters nowadays.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if DDG to Real is already a done deal. As Liamness says, Real rarely miss out on a player they are publicly pursuing. He's Spanish, so Real hold a huge attraction for him, and playing for them would help him secure the first choice keeper spot in the Spain squad. Also, doesn't his girlfriend keep moaning about how crap Manchester is?

There might even have been a deal in place for months, hence the signing of Valdes.

I agree, LVG said in his press conference that there is a deal on the table for Dave. Allegedly £200k per week, but it's down to him.

I think he'll go personally. Valdez is a good replacement, not to mention Cech and Lloris being available too if we need another quality goalie.

Gundogan has come out of the blue, would be a good signing for the money if he can stay fit. Some rags suggesting we're to sign up to 6 players.

Only if we sign another attacking midfielder of his class like Reus or Bale. Which seems unlikely. I think Di Maria has shown his quality in flashes, and that he can do things very few other player can do. It's true we could have an excellent attack without him:

Rooney Young Mata Gundogan Herrera Carrick

But my thinking is that as our midfield grows in confidence and can really control games, we will be better placed to accommodate him. Part of the reason Young and Mata have been picked ahead of him is circumstance: Di Maria was banned against Tottenham when everything clicked, and it was hard to drop them after that. They also a less anarchic influence, as they tend to keep the ball and pass in tidy triangles where the Argentine might try something outrageous (which I feel has been exacerbated by him trying to prove himself). So Van Gaal sees them as a safer choice, while the team is still learning his methods, but he is ultimately a better player than either.

I think it's all about being able to get him on the ball and allow him to create. When we've been able to do that regularly in games he's looked great. He also gives us a degree of flexibility, he can play where Young, Mata or Gundogan are in that system and give us something different. Squad would be much weaker without him.

A backwards step for United, if true.

Do we need Gündoğan ? I'd rather we sign Memphis Depay, so as we can have a winger / attacker down the right hand side, also hope we sign a decent RB, seeing as Rafael seems not to be able to get fit / or get into the first team anymore

Well, this has gone pretty badly so far. I doubt Everton can keep us out all game, our passing moves have been slick and they look pretty open. So do we though, especially on the break. Fellaini looks like he's been a bit put off by the crowd / the occasion.

Midfield is still the weakest area for us imo. Only Herrera can connect the play with his running, and only Carrick / Blind can play at the base of midfield. We also need another player who is top-class when it comes to creating opportunities from deep, especially against packed defences. Gundogan would fill that particular hole. We also just generally need more cover, top teams will have 5-6 players who can do well for them in central areas, we have four players who are great, but it only takes a couple of injuries for us to be really struggling.

It's good that we're dominating games in terms of possession but it does feel a bit like we're lacking a proper cutting edge. Soaking up the pressure and hitting us on the break seems like it could be a fruitful tactic for opposition teams.

Looking a bum fight for 4th between us and Liverpool at the moment.

Lots of the ball, no penetration and we find ourselves two down against Everton. Poor defending on both goals.

We did it to Arsenal all the time.

2-0 down at half time. That was surprising. Everton got a little bit lucky with their first goal, but Fellaini should've equalised. There's no movement up front, no runners behind, and the build up play is too pedestrian. Cue an LVG rollicking at half time and maybe ADM coming on. But I can't see us winning this game now

Bit disappointing that Everton were so clearly trying to get Fellaini booked from the off, particularly given so many niggling fouls against us were ignored by the referee (that can happen away from home though), and that it was a dive which eventually drew the foul. A Fellaini that can't get physical isn't very much use, and it seems teams have figured out if you take him out of the game, then we're not actually very good. We did eventually try a different way of attacking when Falcao and then Di Maria came on, and we were getting it down the wings with pace, but it all came a bit late.

McNair was really quite poor, and Blind also didn't have the best game. Smalling was just putting out fires all over the place. Every single goal was really disappointing and completely avoidable, has to be up there as one of the worst performances at the back all season.

Everton definitely deserved it; you'd think the incentive of going 2nd would spur them on but anaemic possession without the cutting edge up front.

Need a younger version of Carrick in there to play in front of the central defence; as he seems to read the game so well from there....

Livepool must be ruing that draw yesterday as a win might have put some pressure on. As it is, I can't see them catching you.
