The old Man Utd Thread

City next. I feel a lot more confident after the last few performances and City seem to be struggling for form at the moment. I'm not counting my chickens yet, but it should be entertaining.

Herrera really has been something in the last few games; 5 shots on target and 5 goals. Plenty of revisionism in the media about if he'd been trusted earlier in the season, but I read LVG kept him out until he learned to stop chasing the ball down. He's been more of a box-to-box player in the last few weeks. Almost Scholes-esque the way he arrives late into the box.

City game will be interesting, they've had our number over the last few meetings, hopefully we can turn the corner against them like we did Liverpool and get a win. Next 3 games are crucial to our top four aspirations with City, Chelsea and Everton next up.

Excellent stuff, Liverpool down and out, City put back in their place and it's all up to us to retain our spot and avoid the CL playoff games. Barring an unforeseen spectacular implosion by Chelsea, second is entirely realistic now, regardless of how fragile we can see at times. Sticking with this formation has helped, not to mention Rooney getting his game back thanks to being put up front again. The only downside is our line-up is going to be so predictable that it may work against us. Two strikers hasn't worked with Rooney and Falcao yet, can't see it being risked against City.

City are playing much better than us as well. Although they are being pretty dirty, their urgency is much greater and they're forcing us into a lot of unnecessary errors. I can't see this staying at 2-1.

I reckon they'll finish with 10 players, way they're going. We're doing well but Jones and Smalling scare me every time the ball goes near them. Thanfully Super Valencia is there to offer a hand!

Where's all those 'same points at the same stage as moyes' numpties now?

Doesn't make it any less true that that was the case a few weeks ago, so you can't blame people for worrying after the Moyes debacle. Van Gaal has so much more about him than Moyes though, that it was inevitable it'd start to click at some point. It took a bit longer than expected, but we actually look like a cohesive team again.

Chelsea next then. Can't wait now.

Favourite bit of the match was this. Clattenburg's face is an absolute picture. He was definitely about to card Fellaini as well.

It's crazy to think that Young's United career was supposedly revived by learning a new position, and now we've changed systems he's in his original favoured role and winning MOTM. My assumption was that he was too limited to play as a forward for us, and teams had worked him out; as Fletch will tell you, he sometimes likes to cut inside on his right and / or dive. But he looks a much more complete player now, and seems to be playing the best football of his career. Credit to Van Gaal for getting the best out of a player, indeed one who pretty much everyone thought we should sell last summer, but also to Young for showing an incredible amount of drive to keep his place in the side, particularly considering who he's keeping on the bench.

Amazing few weeks. I feared the worse after losing to Swansea but I have to give LVG some credit, he's turned it around now that he realises we can't play that stupid formation we played earlier in the season. I do think Van Persie getting injured has helped us somewhat, this led to Rooney going back up-top and allowing us to play Fellaini, Carrick and Herrera all at the same time and they've all been brilliant to the extent that we're dominating the middle of the park for once!

Bring on Chelsea.

I think Herrera has been outstanding in the middle over the last 5/6 games. I'm a little concerned with Carrick coming off injured at the end, hope he's ok for the Chelsea game. If Chelsea don't pick up some form, I could see them losing to us and Arsenal over the next few weeks which could see Utd and Arsenal catch them. What an end to the season that might be?!!

Herrera again stood out for me. He's been fantastic over the past month or two, he also never stopped running yesterday. Box to box too, not just in the final third like some players. That kind of work rate along with his technical ability is just fantastic, fantastic player.

Also, Carrick too. No surprise we've played much better since he came back into the game.

What a great performance yesterday, we're starting to see the fruits of the 'philosophy' now. I feared the worst when City got the early goal, but to our credit, we got back in it and they couldn't get near us from then on. Laines and Ashley Young, who would've thought they'd have been our stand out performers as of late? Certainly not me, just goes to show how little I know, along with Mata and Anders we've got a great balance in the middle of the park at the moment.
