The old Man Utd Thread

Well that went pretty well. Fair gap between 4th and 5th now, we should definitely be looking up more than we're looking down. There's three teams that will probably finish in 2nd-4th place, but I have no idea what the order will be.

First half the lads just carried on from where they left off against Spurs, we controlled the game and there were some excellent individual performances. We had most of the possession, and the game was being played at a moderate pace, which suited us. Van Gaal deserves credit for that, can't remember the last time we went to Anfield and were able to set the tempo. Eventually things returned to type though, which made for a nervous last half hour. We should've tried to keep the ball and frustrate Liverpool, instead it was very frenetic and they could've easily nicked one. Di Maria's introduction added another element of chaos; even though his assist for Mata's second was magnificent, he was always playing very direct and often gave the ball away. On the other hand, Mata's use of the ball showed tremendous tactical intelligence.

Fellaini was awesome. I lost count of the number of crucial interceptions he made. He is showing how much more he is than just a target man, playing a big part in our midfield dominance in the first half and contributing well to attacking moves. We have a really great balance in midfield right now, with his strength, Herrera's mobility and Carrick unselfishly playing the numbers game.

Very odd, though obviously appreciated, that Mata's primary contribution to the team in his time here has been his goals. It's not like his finishing was particularly celebrated before joining us, but he is proving to be absolutely deadly in the box now. He can clearly work very well in a 4-3-3 on the right, and I expect he'd be just as happy on the left, though perhaps less of a goal threat. He still needs to put in work defensively, but not to the same degree as he did in Chelsea's 4-2-3-1, or when we were bizarrely playing him as a central midfielder earlier in the season. It's probably his best position besides playing behind a striker, which I don't see him getting the opportunity to do. Happy to see him finally getting time in a position where he can show us how good he is, anyway.

Hope Shaw and Rafael can get fit soon, it would be great to see us play this system with natural fullbacks, though Blind and Valencia are proving about as good stand-ins as you could hope for. Also wondering what's happened to Wilson, someone needs to share the load with Rooney, because Falcao and Van Persie don't look particularly up to it.

The only worrying thing from the game was Di Maria. He was useless when he came on despite assisting the 2nd goal. He must have given the ball away at least 7 or 8 times in the space of 20 minutes. I'd actually put him behind Januzaj in the pecking order right now. He has no confidence at all.

Ah yes, the Guardian, notorious for its anti-Manchester bias.

Quite a leap of logic from 'Papers make a big deal about former England captain getting sent off after 30 seconds in his final game against arch rivals' to 'Papers hate Man Utd'. You're really surprised that the red card is what they're focusing on? Seriously?
