The old Man Utd Thread

Why are we that keen to shed Darren Fletcher that he's going on a free? Would West Ham really not cough up, say, £0.5m for him?!

It makes sense as a gesture of goodwill. If no transfer fee is required, that probably means more clubs will be interested, and he will have less pressure on him to immediately perform. He has got over his illness and is only thirty, what he needs is a lower pressure environment where he will get games; he's looked fit but mentally off the pace so far this season. Hope he does well wherever he goes.

There's a significant number of players who are either on loan or out of favour who I expect to leave in either this window or the next. Even if we spend a stupid amount of money on transfers in the summer (and it looks quite likely that we will) I'd be surprised if our wage bill climbs all that much. Especially if we decline to sign Falcao permanently, and unless he has a dramatic turnaround of form, I don't see why we would. No need to have three strikers on our books who are all past their peak.

As long as Blind stays fit I'm not too worried about that.

What does Herrera have to do to get a game? Nope, let's just play three strikers. I think Van Gaal is the best man to take us forward, but his selections are becoming increasingly frustrating.

First half was great. Januzaj looked more like himself, and Di Maria was much more threatening from a deep position, where he could take the ball on the run and drive at opponents. Blind was great too and pretty much ran the show, he showed a wonderful passing range, and also covered the defence well. I don't understand why we didn't try and turn it into a tonking in the second half given we were three up though. The subs seemed strangely conservative, and the fact that we backed off a bit seemed to invite Leicester City back into the game.

Jones has to work on his composure with the ball at his feet. There was one moment where he went on a run for about half the pitch's length, but then spent ages trying to pick an option and eventually passed it sideways, at which point Leicester City had reorganised. Later he was pressured into a mistake which almost gave a goal away. It feels like currently the opposition are happy to let him have possession, and can rely on him to give them opportunities. He's still only 22 so there's no reason he can't improve in this regard, but still concerning. Also

It's like Kagawa all over again, man. :(

Apparently West Ham won't be signing Fletcher after all, apparently they were only interested in a loan whereas Darren wanted a contract. I have read before that if an issue is discovered in a medical, and therefore the transfer is no longer possible, it is generally considered good form to make up some excuse so the player's career isn't ruined. Maybe I'm reading to much into this though, but tbh I don't see why they would see a huge difference between a 5 month loan deal and (for instance) an 18 month contract, if there wasn't any transfer fee to be paid.

So, who is Marnick Vermijl and is he any good?

Got decent enough reviews for the reserves but was never given a chance by successive managers despite the club not having a fit right back. Only game I remember seeinhg him in was the MK Dons tie this season, he was as good as the rest that night.

Man Utd XI: De Gea, McNair, Smalling, Evans, Rojo, Blind, Fellaini, Mata, Rooney, Di Maria, Van Persie

He really doesn't trust Herrera. Don't understand it, not one bit.

No idea how we line up. 5 at the back, or a diamond with Rooney in midfield and Di Maria upfront? Or two holding players in Fellaini and Blind with 4 cb's across the back 4?

I just wish he'd stop being so clever and pick the best players in their best positions and run with it.

McNair was quite tidy at right back. Hard to tell what he's like positionally as he didn't really have to defend, but he was confident with the ball at his feet, and created far more opportunities than I can imagine some of our other makeshift fullbacks (Smalling, Jones) would've been able to. Seemed to relish having a lot of the ball and being asked to do something with it.
