The old Man Utd Thread

All hail James Wilson. Doesn't quite have the physical presence of Welbeck and probably never will, but he does have his pace and intelligent movement. Perhaps more importantly, he seems to have an end product. He did have quite a bit of space to work in given QPR were chasing the game, but he didn't put a foot wrong in the final third, and took his goal very well.

I think the game against Cambridge United could be a good opportunity to see what he can do playing through the middle. Would be nice to see Januzaj get a start too. While I think our real problems start further back, our lack of dynamism and pace up front is hardly ideal, and these two youngsters have those attributes in spades. Would love to see them getting more games.

Would also love to see us playing with a bloody back four. I think the argument of 3 at the back giving us more cover is moot, because we look defensively shaky regardless of the system. At least with a 4-4-2 diamond (or, you know, whatever it is) we create chances.

Well that was another underwhelming win against a very poor QPR side. I feel like Evans getting injured and being FORCED to revert to a 4-4-2 was the only reason we won the game. The longer LVG persists with this 3-5-2 nonsense the longer we will struggle. De Gea was great again and Rojo was brilliant but other than that I thought everyone else was average at best. We're playing a 65M winger out of position, baffling.

Fuck that

Wow, I'd bite their hands off. Valdes is a great keeper and De Gea won't stick around forever - he wants a bigger club.

In any case it won't happen, swaps never do in this country. (Cue someone tedious listing a couple of swaps from 18 years ago)

Yes he is.

I thought Phil Neville's criticism of Januzaj was a bit uncalled-for. He's not tearing it up, but he's been one of our brighter attacking players. Making the point that he's out of sorts and low on confidence and then picking out a couple of bits of indecision seems unfair and certainly isn't going to help the poor lad.

It's like a typical mismatched Ultimate Team game. Cambridge full of Bronze players, but with a good chemistry. United full of TotW Gold rares, but the manager hasn't got a clue how to use them. I expect Utd will fluke a goal from a freak keeper error or something, if the analogy holds true.

Minimum of 3 minutes injury time. Cambridge keeper wastes 20 seconds of time. Ref blows at exactly 3mins when Man Utd were on a good attack with an extra man. Pfft.

Although we could've played for another 90 mins and still it scored.

Cambridge played really well, fought for everything, and fully deserve their result. their players get something they can tell their grandkids about, and the club will get a huge payday from the replay at Old Trafford. you can't begrudge them it at all. that save their keeper made from Falcao was pretty special too.

the result doesn't really hurt United. we can cope with a replay, as we've not got a congested fixture-list, and we've got a huge squad now most of the players are fit. amid the general worries over a lack of creativity, i thought Januzaj showed a few flashes that he might yet return to the player he was last season. we seem to need that guy now. the skill in the last minute to create that chance (another great save) was fantastic. he did dither on the ball at times, but it was better than his last few appearances, for sure. Phil Jones was very good too, although the sight of him taking corners was alarming.

it was frustrating to watch, but in the end it's one of those nice cup stories, and in a way i prefer this result to if we'd ended up scrambling a 1-0 win. this generosity will be rescinded if we lose the replay though.

It's really sad watching Falcao not even able to occupy a Cambridge defence, Three years ago he looked like the best number nine on the planet and his performance in the Uefa Super Cup was incredible. That knee injury has just killed his natural game.

Don't look too much into it, it wasn't a normal football game (80/20 possession) which would be end to end and suit United's style of play with counter attacks. Cambridge did really well to nullify that.

It's incredibly difficult to play against 11 men on the end of the box and it showed, see also West Ham v Chelsea last season.

Yes they needed some great saves and a slice of luck with RVP missing a sitter but that's football and at the end of the day it's 11 men on each side, anything can happen and that's why we love the game.

Now let's hope Boro beat City tomorrow at the Etihad :D

I feel sorry for Falcao. He runs his socks off and makes great runs in the box but just isn't getting any service. If we could get early balls into the box like we did in the Ruud era, Falcao would be smashing them in.

Yep, just like the last few weeks when he did have clear chances and scored loads.

I think fans have fell in love with the image and idea of Falcao, his performances for us have in no way been good enough.

It's undeniable that we are devoid of playing with any form of pace, spontaneity or creativity but this is not the reason his first touch is horrendous. Continuously he will lose the ball through failing to control it, he has absolutely no pace. If Falcao was running around all game with no touches I think you'd have a point, but he's always just behind any pass because he simply can't reach it for pace anymore.

These issues aren't going away. He shouldn't be starting games and I see zero point in signing him. Big signing are supposed to give a buzz and reinvigorate the team. Any re-energising from the initial loan signing has long since gone, he just isn't the player he was and coupled with playing in a very ordinary side the deal isn't working out for either party. The guys issues are bigger than formation and service.
