The old Man Utd Thread

Sorry to quote myself but here's what I said back in October when Valdes was training with us.

Rumblings that he could sign with us. Would be ideal imo. Lindegaard is good but came to the club expecting to play, and I can't see him extending his contract. Valdes, on the other hand, moved on from Barcelona because he's won everything there and wanted a lower-pressure environment. So he'd be happy with a role as backup / mentor to our main keeper, presumably.

Still think that makes sense. I think Lindegaard is on his way out, most likely during this transfer window. I think if the club thought signing Valdes could unsettle De Gea at all, there's no chance they would've done it. Valdes himself has made it very clear that his new role will be to support De Gea.

I think an offer will come in from Madrid at some point regardless, because they have a habit of breaking the bank to offer ludicrous amounts of money for the world's best players, which he is undoubtedly one of. I think our ability to resist that offer will depend on the progress the team has made, and whether we can offer De Gea a platform to win the biggest trophies and cement his position in the national side. It may also have something to do with money. Won't be about signing Valdez, at any rate.

Southampton deserve the win. Excellent defence, they completely stopped us creating anything. They look a better team than us, for all our big names and all our money spent.

We were dreadful. I think the formation is a problem. No creativity, defensive confusion, the wide players get isolated, we have no easy outlet passes so end up trying to thread balls through a crowded midfield and giving it away.

So the game went like this, pretty much:

  • Nothing much happens
  • Southampton score
  • Nothing much happens

It looks like when a team comes and defends as well as Southampton did, there's nothing we can do to break the deadlock. Fair play to the Saints but we shouldn't be playing 90 minutes at home and not getting a shot on target. I don't think going into hoofball mode helped much either.

Good performance from Southampton, kept Carrick shackled which always hinders us. Had to laugh at Tadic though, he whips off his shirt when he scores to flex his muscles and show how strong he is then runs into Jones at the end and goes down like hes been gutshot!!

Di Maria should've been playing deeper, he wasn't involved enough. Rooney is not really a central midfielder, he's been getting results lately as a sort of striker who arrives from deep. He wasn't able to achieve this while Schniederlin and Wanyama were mopping up in front of their defence. They were both out of position and would've been better off in each other's roles.

Nice to have pretty much everyone fit, I think only Rafael was out? Maybe now we can just play everyone in their actual roles.

21 games in and to be tracking almost exactly Moyes's stats at this point - in particular precisely the same number of points earned in the PL - can't be exactly what was hoped for from LvG. It was by now that DM's head was starting to be widely demanded, wasn't it? Clearly the quality and style of play was a large part of the issue - the slightly desperate stuff towards the end against Southampton being more the norm under DM - and I suppose the league must generally be a bit weaker/closer if you're in the CL spots with the same points but still, the handling of Moyes seems ever harsher. Sociedad's gain I suppose (maybe). They mentioned on MOTD that the figures were put to LvG in the press conference but not how he responded to it.

BTW, where's Januzaj these days? He was one of the few bright spots last season but now seems to have disappeared. A quick Google suggested a loan to Villa was a possibility - what the hell'd he do to LvG to deserve that?

I have no idea why I've been negged for slating Blackett. Look at their goal last night, he's all over the place. Soon after that he has the ball in defence with no one pressuring him and plays a 40 yard pass straight to a Southampton player. I've watched him all season, right now he's not good enough to play for Man Utd. He needs to go out on loan. Now is not the time to be bedding in youngsters in an already shaky defence. We need to buy a quality CB in this window because we simply can't afford not to finish in the top 4 again this season.

Team's out:

De Gea, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Valencia, Carrick, Mata, Blind, Rooney, Di Maria, Falcao

Could be a 4-3-3 with Rojo at left back, but more likely a 3-5-2 with Blind at wingback, and Mata and Rooney in attacking midfield. Boo, I say, boo. We do not need three at the back for QPR ffs. Also Shaw isn't even on the bench, so I guess we're sort of fullbackless once more.
