The old Man Utd Thread

At least both Chelsea and City drew, so although we failed to make up ground we haven't lost any. One less game left to the end of the season though.

I'd love us to get a bit closer, even though I don't really see us challenging for the title this season. It'd make a great end to an interesting campaign and show the confidence is returning.

Tough game today against Stoke; Diouf and Crouch will give our back three a game. Thankfully, no Bojan for Stoke though.

United XI: De Gea, Young, Jones, Smalling, Evans, Shaw, Carrick, Mata, Rooney, van Persie, Falcao #mufcliv

Attacking line-up from LVG again, liking this team. Hopefully we can find the net today.

So, another day, another chance to potentially get embarassed by a league one side! I expect Van Gaal to name a completely changed side with many players rested, as he did against MK Dons. His ideas have had some time to bed in now though, even among the squad players, so the team should have some clue what they're doing regardless of the shape we start with. Also, Yeovil are at the opposite end of the table to the Dons, so there is that. Powell has returned from his loan spell at Leciester (where apparently he didn't make a very good account of himself) so I suppose he could feature, Lingard is fit again apparently, and I feel Herrera needs a game too. Think we'll see something like

Wilson

Januzaj Lingard

Herrera Powell

Fletcher

Shaw Rafael

Blackett McNair

De Gea

A pretty insipid first half, it's almost as if they don't recognise each other...

PS you weren't far out with the starting team selection Liamness ^_^

Although I'd have been very shocked if Powell even made the bench

Fletch looked quite poor. It's strange because he seems to be able to last 90 minutes quite easily, and while he seems a touch slower than he was, it's not like he ever seemed to be struggling physically. It looks like mental sharpness is the issue, as he just doesn't pick out a pass or notice danger as quickly as he used to. Understandable as he just hasn't played a great deal of football over the past four years. It's probably best that he finds a club that will give him a run of games, that's the only way he's going to find form again.

Herrera and Di Maria were both fab in the second half. Really hope they can stay fit.

Good signing that. Now we need to get De Gea signed up ASAP. If Real Madrid want him we must ensure we get maximum value for him, he's easily worth 30M+.

I think we should make a cheeky 1M bid for Ron Vlaar, he would be a good addition to the backline and he always impresses me when I see Villa play. This would allow us to send Blackett and Mcnair out on loan for more first team experience. I think he'd probably start for us too, Evans and Jones are having horrible seasons and always look like they've got a mistake in them.

Valdes joining is fucking odd. His wages must be high and he won't have joined to be 2nd choice. Maybe he's decided he's had enough of football and will just take the paycheque, but why'd you choose to live in Manchester if that was the case. It could already be decided that De Gea is off, but there hasn't been anything solid to suggest that's going to happen in the near future. Odd for only an 18 month deal if he's the long term replacement for DDG.

perhaps he just needed a club. he's been training with United as part of his recovery from the anterior cruciate injury he had. perhaps the idea is to continue with that, but sign him up so he can play a few games as well if needed. it seems to benefit both sides in a way. maybe no-one else was keen to take a risk on his fitness.

on the other hand, the DDG to Real rumours have been getting more and more persistent. it makes sense - Real need a decent keeper, and the two clubs seem to deal with each other an awful lot. plus, any Spanish player would be likely to have their head turned if Real came in for them. the final and most damning thing is that "senior club sources" have said that they are "relaxed" about him signing a new deal. that pretty much stinks of an Ed Woodward cockup in the making, doesn't it? i get the feeling that the people at the top don't realise how important DDG is to United. he's our best player.
