The old Man Utd Thread

Wilson gets his start today, both Herrera and Falcao on the bench.

The starting eleven for this fixture were all at the club last season, so hope we get a better performance than last time out - not that I'm getting to watch owing to my daughters 4th birthday party.

I'm finding it hard to get much joy out of this United team. Despite our winning streak it feels like we've made some kind of pact with the devil to consistently play as badly as possible and then win with our only shots on target.

I mean, are we really playing any better than we did under Moyes? Really?

As a Liverpool fan I'd gladly accept that pact.

I think the only person that said anything like that about DDG was Fox, an Arsenal fan. He had a good game but we hardly made life that hard for him with most of our attempts.

Also, in comparison to Jones anyone was going to look pretty good!

There's no denying that De Gea is a great keeper but a lot of today's saves was down to how shit our finishing is. The save from the Balotelli shot was great mind.

RVP saying he did get the touch so put it down as an assist for him  Cheeky wee bastard <_<

The Liverpool thread is full of exasperation, misery, recriminations, and claims that DDG isn't a good keeper - he just keeps getting in the way of shots. In here it's just me talking to myself. What's up with that?

Tbh most of us are shocked after watching that we kept a clean sheet, after let's be honest not a great performance, the sooner we have defenders back the better; which means Carrick back in midfield shielding the back 3/4/5 (also Daley Blind)

Plus Angel Di Maria to add to our attacking options ^_^

Just as shocking as how far offside Mata was, was how little the Liverpool players appealed. Only Skrtel seemed to raise his hand. This seasons liverpool don't seem to have any belief or fight about them.

as i was saying to myself earlier, i really enjoyed today's match. United didn't look great for the first ten minutes, and we shipped an awful lot of chances, but there were some real positive signs, compared to last season and even last week. you can see what Van Gaal is trying to get them to do. it's all about intricate passing out of defence, clever triangles in dangerous areas. this does mean that we might give it away at times, like we did last week, and this happened again today on occasion. the third goal encapsulated what Van Gaal is trying to achieve, playing out of trouble then counter-attacking effectively. for this reason, i think Carrick should probably stay in the defence if we play a back three - he's the best player we have at that sort of thing. he seems able to pass his way out of any situation, and he can launch attacks with a clever pass out of defence.

going forward, RVP looks a real force again, and Mata played better than he has for a while. even Fellaini looked really good, after i had called for him to be subbed after five minutes (he started with a misplaced pass and a crazy booking.) he kept winning the ball cleanly, without committing a foul, and then passing it neatly. i liked Valencia's new-found commitment to getting his head up when he's charging down the wing and picking a pass rather than twatting it out for a throw-in on the far side. Rooney looks a good midfielder, finally. i just wish Falcao had got a goal. i'm starting to worry about him. he can't get a game ahead of a youth team player (albeit a very good one) and looks lost when he does come on. is his knee permanently fucked? time is certainly running out for him if he wants to stay at United after the loan period is up. i hope he does pick it up. we look like a team that has goals in it, even if we don't create a ton of chances. they're all going in at the moment.

however, we did rely heavily on De Gea again. having the best goalkeeper in the world in your team is a bit of a luxury! it's an odd game to judge the team on because as good as we were in some ways, we could easily have shipped seven goals. i think poor old Balotelli will be having nightmares about DDG tonight. his performance could only have been improved if, after the fifth excellent save to deny "super" Mario he had lifted his shirt to reveal a t-shirt bearing the message, "why are you always shit?" there was a moment that summed up Balotelli in the second half. he received the ball on the right wing with Young defending in front of him and immediately went into pose mode. he stood still, hands on hips a la Rooney all those years ago, then began waving his right leg over the ball in a vague approximation of a couple of dummies before passing the ball backwards ten yards. he then received a return ball and hit his cross straight at Young. this at 2-0 down.

Liverpool were not good, a potent combination of defensive mistakes and ineffective finishing, and confused by a system that allowed Moreno to play right up the pitch leaving Joe Allen to end up filling in at left-back and struggling to contain Valencia. their goalkeeper was terrible. he inexplicably dived the wrong way for Rooney's goal (which was always going in that corner) and hopped around committing himself far too early for the third. the reason De Gea made the saves he did was down to being in the perfect position, being properly balanced, and not panicking. i do find the talk of Rodgers losing his job sad though, not because i want him to stay there for the same reasons Liverpool fans wanted Moyes to stay at Old Trafford - i really don't wish them any ill-will - but because it would be really unfair on the guy considering the job he did last season, and the circumstances that have surrounded and lead to this season's disastrous form. any team would struggle if they lost Saurez. to lose him and Sturridge (80% of their goals) at the same time must be extraordinarily tough. add to this a number of new signings trying to bed in, Gerrard's decline, the added matches the Champions League brings, and the general hangover of last season's slip from grace, and it was always going to be a tough season for them. he's made some baffling signings (Balotelli, Markovic, Mignolet) but can't be blamed for the fact that Lovren is unrecognisable from the player he was last season. Lallana is starting to show signs that he might be a good player for them though. i just don't think you can sack a guy who six months ago took a middling team to within two games of winning the league. football has gone crazy if they sack him.

not that we care, of course. 3-0!:omg:

Great stuff. The win, that is. Our performance wasn't the perfect display but who the fuck cares. Everyone looks happy and eager, Valencia is beating his man, Jones got straight back into it and van Persie and Wilson look great - hoping they understand each other better soon, because they could be deadly over the next couple of years.

I'm not too familiar with this thread so can't tell if you are joking or not. He's admittedly a great keeper, but best in the world? Not even best in the Premier League.

He's not the best in the world as he still has some work to do on commanding his area. I'm not sure who is the best at the moment though as all the brilliant goalies of yesteryear are now retired or past it: schmeichel, Khan, cassilas, valdes, cech, Buffon...

Courtois must be pretty good as he's knocked Cech down the pecking order at Chelsea. I'm not a big fan of Jo Hart or Fraser Forster. Ben Foster isn't world class. Lloris has had a shaky season. Tim Howard should be the best with that beard

Worldwide who've we got? Claudio Bravo, Manuel Neuer? Anyone else?
