The old Man Utd Thread

Blind looked like a younger, more mobile Carrick. Much better having him protecting a back four than playing with a back three, because he is obviously a much better passer than any of our defenders. Rafael showed us just how much we missed him, made a great clearance in the first half, would've probably been a goal if Valencia, Lingard or someone or other was playing right wingback.

Di Maria was just having a laugh out there. I'm looking forward to watching him enjoy his football many more times.

Not getting ahead of myself but that was a lot of FUN!

Di Maria was incredible. What a player we have. Still worried about the defence though. I think we'll get a few beatings this season, Arsenal style. Blackett does not convince me at all.

3pts at Leicester and then we can get some momentum going!

Ronaldo will have to move to City. The red no.7 shirt is taken.

Mata was back to his Chelsea form today and Rooney put in a captain's shift. Which just leaves RVP and Falcao to battle it out for the final place in attack. It's like the last 12 months of misery never really happened.

On RVP, he was basically anonymous today wasn't he? And when he got the chance (that fabulous pass from Di Maria) he fluffed it. On his left foot! Pretty disappointed with him today, but everyone else put in a good shift. Blind and Herrera worked tirelessly, and the difference in quality they make to our midfield is night and day. Promising signs :)

Di Maria's best moment of the game, for me. Picks up the ball in the left back position, next player who touches it is Rooney in the box.

Van Persie did not look quite sharp, still. Van Gaal seems decided that he's part of our best XI though, aside from Swansea (where Hernandez was a stand-in) he's started every game so far in the league, along with Rooney and Mata playing just behind. That's remarkably consistent considering all the other changes that have gone on. Even with the three outstanding forwards we have though, I would like to see us switch to a single striker system. The 4-4-2 we used today lacks real width, relying too much on Di Maria and Herrera to motor out to the wings. The 3-5-2 leaves the wingbacks isolated and asks a great deal of running from them and the central midfielders. Very few top sides are playing with two strikers these days, you have to pay for it in some other area of the pitch.

I agree actually, but who to drop is the problem, especially with Falcao now in contention too. Van Persie and Rooney just have no partnership or interplay to speak of and never have done. Playing them both up top just seems like a waste of a player further back to me. There's also the issue that they're both quite slow too.

Anyway I know it's only QPR but I really enjoyed today's match. It's the most I've enjoyed watching United for quite a long time now. It's kind of irrelevant in the grand scheme of things because we won't get too many easier games than home to QPR but some of the quick, sharp one-touch passing and some of the movement in midfield from Herrera and Blind has been absent for far too long. It was good to see it back. You'd have to say Carrick may well not be considered a practically automatic starter when he comes back from injury.

Di Maria was wonderful, of course. Looked every inch a 60 million pound player.

yeah, that was fantastic. Rooney deserves credit for a very intelligent bit of running off the ball, too. his change of direction to run inside, parallel with the goal, opened QPR up.

i think we need to give RVP a bit more time. he's looked out of sorts all season, and hasn't played well since the Netherlands beat Spain, really. when he is on form though, he's as good as anyone in the world, and we can't forget that. the question is, why is he so bad at the moment? is he injured? he's denied that. is he fading? have his previous injuries across his career caught up with him? i thought he improved as the game went on, and he did set up a decent chance for Januzaj. Falcao is probably worth a start against Leicester, but i wouldn't condemn RVP to the role of backup yet.

talking of Januzaj, i worry for him. he's the brightest talent we've produced for years, probably since the class of 92, but he's going to struggle to get any game time. when he came on, he was played out of position, and looked like a player trying to do too much himself, trying to force his way back into the team. kind of like how Nani played on his rare appearances last season. where would he play in this system though? i don't think he's a number ten yet, and i don't think he has Di Maria's tactical intelligence, flexibility, or the engine required in order to play his role.

Rio confirming what we'd all suspected, Moyes was out of his depth at United.

Haven't enjoyed a United match in a long time up until yesterday's fixture. Fair enough, QPR were abject, but it was nice to some of the one-touch passing, quick movement again. Not a single, ploddy zombie pass in sight.

Blind will have more testing days, but I thought he was superb yesterday; a younger Carrick, will be interesting to see if he can find a place back in the first team when he returns.

Rojo did okay, he was tenacious and his understanding with Di Maria down the left will prove fruitful for us I believe.

It's easy to blame QPR for their abject performance but it's been far too long since we saw a Man Utd team perform like that at Old Trafford. By no means perfect but its a good start and great to see Blind and Rojo slotting in without much effort. Di Maria is another level obviously. Herrera stood out for me too, I love his style of play. A true box to box midfielder.

Have to say, I was very pleased when I saw we weren't lining up with 3 at the back.

I thought Van Persie was decent too. Not his usual standards but bear in mind he's had pretty much no preseason to speak so its a few weeks behind the rest of them

Can't be nice paying over £50 to go and see a very poor United team.

yeah sounds well shit going to see a team with a few new world class signings muller another team at the start of an exciting new period in the clubs history.

Not a utd fan btw.
