The old Man Utd Thread

I'm sure Mata will get games although his performances so far this season don't warrant a place in the team.

Putting money on Mata to Valencia by next summer at the latest. He always was an odd signing for Utd; he's not effective in central midfield or wide, but competes with the club captain if you use a No10 behind RVP/Falcao.

WIth that being said, I'd rather have Mata in that number 10 role instead of our club captain.

It's not going to be simple for LvG I think.

I think if you're playing a No10 behind two strikers, you need someone who gets more involved in the build up play than Mata. He's deadly in front of goal in terms of finishing touches, but compared to Fabregas, Silva or (on form) Ozil his involvement in deeper positions or wide areas is ponderous and generally lacking. This was pretty apparent against Burnley when he was having to drop off and get involved in the centre more, and looked pretty clueless. It's basically the main reason Mourinho sold him in the first place.

Of course Rooney doesn't solve that issue either, but he's the captain and is on ridiculous money so unless he's playing like utter shit and Mata is killing it every time he plays, Rooney is going to get the nod in that position.

Everyone looked clueless bar Di Maria against Burnley!

I still think we sold our best number 10 in Kagawa but thats besides the point. The one thing we need is our midfield to get Mata in good areas where he can score and create and thats what we haven't done. Now with the new signings I'm hopeful that will change.

Rooney as a number 10 is kinda depressing so I really hope we don't see him there that often.

Just want to point out that I'm talking from the opinion that we're sticking with a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2 diamond as I feel that LvG will still want two strikers. Personally I'd much rather have a 4-3-3 and Mata wouldn't get into that team as first choice for me.

Sad for the player, but if serious, thank goodness, as we got done after Hargreaves, so I'm glad that the club were concerned enough not to take on another player who could spend more time on the treatment table than the football pitch...

At least one or 2 of the new boys will be benched I'd assume...It's crazy though, when you look at that team 7 weren't even at the club this time last year. I'd expect a 4-3-3 given our defensive woes, something like:

De GeaRafael Evans Blackett Rojo Fletcher Blind Mata Rooney Di Maria Falcao
We can't possibly have 3 at the back seeing as our ONLY fit central defenders are all left sided! I think this could also lead to Blackett being found out more. I don't rate him from what I've seen, may be one for the future, but we need him for the now!

Chin, I'd say the same except switch Rooney and Di Maria, move Rojo to centre back and start Shaw instead of Blackett. If Herrera is fit I'd like to see him start instead of Blind, who could potentially come on for Fletcher at some point (just to slightly reduce the number of debuts we'd be giving from the start). I think that's the general shape we should be going for from now, I don't see 3-5-2 getting the best out of our players, particularly Di Maria and Januzaj.

Blind is doing well. He's constantly involved, always available for a pass. Rafael looks our most dangerous attacking player, he's making me realise how much we've missed him.

I like the fact that Blackett and Evans are playing. They said on the Football Ramble that it's apparently been decades since United fielded a team without any players who have come through the youth system and it's good to see that continuing.

He's just wiry. That goal wasn't a fluke; if it hit a head, it would've gone in. It didn't, but the keeper couldn't react in time and it went in anyway, cos it was on target. Very smart.

De Gea making a mistake? WTF

...and another close call. Looks like we're still shaky at the back then.

Van Persie needlessly scythes down a player. HE'S BACK
