The old Man Utd Thread

I heard it was a number of squad players that LVG was looking to let go. Welbeck is a strange choice as he undoubtedly adds something to any squad and could become a great player if given a stretch in a first team. I don't think it's ideal for united to be weakening their squad. I read it as LVG needing to sell to raise more transfer funds.

He's probably looking at Wilson, who continues to look a damn fine prospect: He did the same with Muller at Bayern when they were struggling in his first season.

Under 21s but you get the drift after his two goals against Hull.. If Wilson can kick on from his superb goalscoring record at youth level, we may have a gem. Although I'd prefer Welbeck over Hernandez. I love Chicarito but he's a throwback to the Inzaghi era, it doesn't work too much in the modern era.

Ancelotti is seemingly still trying to play down the fact that Di Maria didn't play in yesterday's game, and obviously wants him to stay. Khedira on the other hand, he has said is free to leave. This is good shit. I think Bayern and maybe Arsenal may also be in for him, we need to go over to Madrid with a truckload of money ASAP.

Valencia will not be fit for Sunday apparently, but Rafael might be? I hope one of them is available at least. Maybe it would be better to go with a makeshift right back again, we don't want to get into a cycle of trying to rush players back, and them getting injured again.

Reading that interview, I wouldn't be surprised if we weren't in for Khedira or Di Maria. It sounds like LvG has decided 3-5-2 it the system he'll implement at United and will buy to enhance that formation. I do think we definitely need another centre back and a holding midfielder to make it viable though. But with LvG most likely waiting til January for Strootman, I think there'll be a lot of irate United fans come 2nd Sept after no big names come in. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Also, just imagine if LvG had taken over before Pogba left...

I am not sure Di Maria is really the right player for the 3-5-2, he'd probably end up playing a very advanced role alongside one of the other forwards, and doesn't really have the goal threat to play there. You could play him behind the two strikers, but we're already stacked there. For me he would be a signing for a 4-3-3, where he'd play as a wide forward. That would fuck Mata over though, and mean only one of Van Persie and Rooney could play (unless you shifted the now club captain out onto the left). Also we don't have enough central midfielders to play that system. I think for the money he would cost, there would be too many issues with integrating him into the squad. Van Gaal has already said the squad is lop-sided, with too many attackers and not enough midfielders and defenders.

Khedira was in Leipzig yesterday, ostensibly to watch his brother's team. But oo-err. He is obviously available, I just hope it isn't the case that another club has moved faster than us, yet again. There is no noise on our side, I'd be completely baffled if we weren't interested.

Actually....

@GuillemBalague

Things finally moving about di María: meetings (agents, clubs) will take place early nxt wk. He has chosen United

Cristiano told di María United is the club to go. Mendes is returning to Europe from Singapur to finalise deal. All very very close.

:omg:

hes undoubtedly a quality footballer, and younger than i thought at just 26. with Di Maria in the squad and most likely adding a Strootman in the winter, things wouldn't be sooo bad.

But saying that If LVG has concerns about Vidals fitness after injury, and he's banking on Strootman to be his man, (who's also out with injury) it surely the same thing, only who is the better footballer and in this case LVG must think strootman is. hmmm

I sincerely doubt Roma will even entertain selling Strootman in January.

Early word is that Blind and Nigel de Jong are the other two targets we're expecting to sign next week. Signing de Jong for a pittance would be a good signing for us in the interim. If we get Di Maria, I don't see the Vidal thing happening.

Speaking of which, I suspect there's probably been a brief about Di Maria, since many outlets started reporting it shortly after Ballague came out with the news and many tend to use their own sources as well. I hope this deal doesn't go the way of the Ronaldinho one which looked to be nailed on...

Interestingly, the Independent are reporting Barcelona are the other club in for Di Maria, but I sincerely doubt Real would sell to their rivals.

Fingers crossed.

I thought every player at a Spanish club has release fee?

As far as I'm aware everybody in Spain has the legal right to buy their own contract out, footballer or not. A third party cannot buy the contract out, so if they want to pay the fee (like a purchasing club in a football transfer) then they have to give the money to the player first. Obviously this money is then subject to tax as it's considered to be an income by the taxman. I don't follow Spanish transfer fees especially closely but apparently that's why so few players move for the 'release clause' in their contact, buyer, seller and player would rather avoid giving 20%+ of the money up in tax if at all possible.

According to the BBC, Di Maria is going to cost us £75 million. Is he that good? Is it really worth spending that kind of money for a player that we don't really need? And why would we spend that much for a player that plays in a position that doesn't really work with van Gaal's preferred system?

He played in a midfield three last season. He'd fit.

He would be no less makeshift playing in the central midfield of a 3-4-1-2 (think that's more accurate than 3-5-2) than say Kagawa or Rooney. He would also be wasted as a wingback. I think he could play in any of the main front three positions, but seeing as he is more of a creator than a goalscorer, probably the playmaker role suits him best. When you say he played as a midfielder last season, yeah he did but as an attacking midfielder. Nonetheless he would inject pace into our attack, and greatly improve our counter attacking capability. I don't necessarily have a problem with him signing him, as long as it doesn't prevent us strengthening weaker areas of the squad.

Valencia has looked good. He makes more sense as a wingback than he ever did as an attacking winger, or a fullback. Blackett looks to be growing into his role too.
