It's refreshing to see Van Gaal's attitude - if the press try and turn on him it doesn't matter, he doesn't give a fuck. Yep, Valencia and Young were started as wing backs, Young is getting stuck in with tackles too, actually making the fella look like a decent player now with some improved crossing.

Shame because I think he would've slotted into a back three very nicely. Of our current defenders only Evans looks truly comfortable with the change. He's better at bringing the ball out than anyone we have too.

Having said that £15m looks like good business for Arsenal.

we've been optimistically linked with Hummels, but that's not going to happen. Mehdi Benatia, who i don't know a lot about, and who Chelsea are interested in, and Marcus Rojo who i'm not sure would be much of an upgrade, and the speculation with him seems to be based on him following Wayne Rooney and Adnan Januzaj on Twitter or something. that area is looking like a problem. we have three front line central defenders - Jones, Evans, and Smalling. none of them are particularly well-suited to the system. if one gets injured (and they're all injury-prone) we'll have Michael Keane playing every game. i'm sure he's decent, but that could be a worry.

Evans is fine, the others.. who knows really. Rojo would be okay cover but honestly, he's nothing special - despite his World Cup credentials now. We need someone else - they haven't promoted anyone else for centre back that I've seen so we need someone along the lines of Vlaar to shore up for cover.

Vlaar basically played in the world cup as a stopper, I think Jones or Smalling could learn that rule quite quickly. What is going to take longer is for them to learn how to play as one of the side centre backs. We need cover generally speaking, but ideally someone who is comfortable tracking players high up the pitch or into wide areas, and supporting the midfield when we don't have the ball.

I'm getting a bit worried that we're still missing at least one good central midfielder and defensive cover. I know we've already spent about £60 million this summer but I am starting to wonder if all that talk about a huge warchest was hot air and we're going to have to offload some players before we're allowed to buy more.

I can't really remember anything specific he did at the world cup but Argentina did put in some highly impressive defensive performances (probably had more to do with Mascherano though). From what I can tell he would not really be an upgrade on the players we have, but we need cover badly. He would be about the same price as Vermalen and has a better injury record (Barcelona have already announced the Belgian is injured and they can't be sure when he'll play), also he's four years younger.
