The old Man Utd Thread

Looking forward to playing Liverpool in the final. Even though it's technically only a pre season friendly, it's a final and it's against Liverpool. Therefore I hope both clubs put out a strong team and we can see if we've closed the gap on them since last season when they spanked us.

Moyes really ought to have got a new job ASAP based on that.

IDGI.

Edit: Oh, do you mean because the success Louis is having with these players is showing Moyes to be an even worse manager than anyone thought, rather than it being down to the players being a bit shit?

Im sorry but he hasnt had any sucess with these players yet. Nothing pre season is real.

So you don't see the pre season as being a success? Players look to be interested, more motivated and playing attractive football all the while playing a totally new system.

Encouraging signs certainly.

The pre season is completely and totally irelevant

Not completely and totally. This was a club and squad in need of a confidence boost and the pre season has done its job. The results aren't as important as the evidence that the players have remembered how to pass to each other and look interested.

Yeah, while the results don't really mean anything the performances will shape the tactics and squad for the rest of the season so I can't agree that the entire thing is irrelevent.

I've only caught a few bits here and there but it seems to have gone well overall. Our frontline playing in their best positions (Zaha aside), the yet-to-be-proven-but-seemingly-successful conversion of Young to wing back and Fletcher back and fit. The number of penalties conceded by the defence is a bit concerning though, even if they've been largely effective in limiting opposition chances (I assume, Van Gaal has mentioned it a few times). I'm pretty confident we'll recruit at least one experienced center half though.

Is Young playing left wing-back then? (I'm an Arsenal fan, so I've not seen any of your preseason.) That seems an odd choice to me, but I do think Valencia (if he gets a bit of form back) and Shaw are well suited to the wing-back positions, and would be inclined to trust van Gaal (who can seem insane, but with a method to the madness) if I was of a United persuasion anyway.

In fact, from my own personal point of view, I actually think van Gaal's presence actually makes you more interesting (and even likeable) than you have been for seemingly ages, and I'm interested to see how, how well, and with who you line up with and play in the coming seaon. Also wondering how long it'll be before he does something the media takes offence at/deems insane (when at present he seems to be flavour of the month).

(Also, if you can excuse the occasional reminder it's written by an American, this is a good read - http://grantland.com/features/louis-van-gaal-manchester-united-netherlands-barclays-premier-league-2014/ )

On the preseason thing; it's vitally important, and it's only the scorelines in the friendlies that are borderline irrelevant. Not only that, but United's preseason this year seems more important than most, and while I'm still paying some attention to Arsenal's preseason this year (and went to the Emirates Cup on Saturday), I'd be paying just as much attention as many of you appear to be if I was a United fan. You have a new coach, seemingly a new system, and the potential for massive turnover on the playing personnel front. Interesting times indeed.
