The old Man Utd Thread

According to reports from Spanish newspaper Sport, German World Cup winner Mats Hummels is on his way to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund. The 25-year-old is supposedly heading to Old Trafford in a $28 million deal.

The towering German defender is a man in demand, as United are said to have beaten Barcelona in securing Hummels signature with Louis van Gaal aiming to strengthen his central defensive options. With Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera signing on this summer so far, more new players are needed with less than a month to go before the new season. Especially in defense.

I've not seen it but his post-match interview sounded pretty interesting. Apparently he said that he sees 3-5-2 as our main formation with 4-3-3 as a backup (so long 4-4-2!) and that we have an unbalanced squad with too many number tens. Which is true but it's interesting to hear him say it so forthrightly after about a week in the job.

By all accounts Herrera was the MOTM which is quite exciting. I know it was only LA Galaxy but still....he has to be an improvement on Cleverly and co

I think we need at least 1 if we're going with that system for the coming season, Michael Keane is with the squad for this tour so he might force his way into contention.

I'm not totally sold on the 3-5-2 but I'm happy we're trying something different. He also mentioned we can easily change into a 4-3-3 if need be. The good thing is he didn't mention a 4-4-2. Looking forward to watching the rerun on MUTV later day when I get home.

Interesting stuff, Van Gaal seems to be really shaking things up, which is exactly what we needed after 20 years of one guy's ideas, followed by one year of directionless fannying about. The formations he's talking about look a good fit for the strengths of the squad, a lot better than 4-4-2 anyway. He's right about us having too many number 10s, (who's the fourth one? Rooney, Mata, Kagawa, Januzaj?) and too many strikers to play 4-3-3. This looks like being bad news for Hernandez or Welbeck, and probably Kagawa.

Who's this Reece James lad? Did he look like being a possibility as LB/LWB cover?

I think its interesting but I'm still not sold on the system yet.

I think Hernandez days are numbered unfortunately, I can see him leaving this summer. Kagawa could flourish behind two strikers I'm sure but there's so much competition for places there (Mata, Januzaj and Herrera even) that he'll likely move for regular first team football. I hope this means we see the end of Rooney as a number 10 too. He's much more effective further forward in the box.

I don't think Welbeck will be sold though. He's got pace that RvP and Rooney don't have so he's a good option to have. Plus it means we won't be seeing him stuck wide left in a 4-4-2 so thats good. He just needs to take his chances when they come.

Reece James was released by Preston as a 18 year old surprisingly but I think regular viewers of reserve football rate quite highly. I'm sure he's there on tour (along with Blackett) to challenge for the left back spot/provide cover.

Matty James is his brother, who was with us but is now at Birmingham or Leicester. I forget which.

I think Hernandez will be off too, shame in a way but if we're being honest he hasn't really kicked on (his first touch is still awful at times) and he doesn't offer the all round threat that are other strikers can.
Not sure about Kagawa, I think he'll be given until January at least.

Herrera was incredible last night.. really turned up for his first game and played balls everywhere, got stuck in and was fantastic to see. I understand now why we were so persistent with him - great things to come I feel from this lad. Alongside Januzaj, Mata and the rest, we're in for a fun season I reckon.

yeah, i've watched some highlights, and his passes for both of Ashley Young's goals were excellent.

there were problems with the formation, as we kept getting caught out by straightforward balls from the centre circle out to the right wing, behind our left wingback and outside of our left centreback.
