The old Man Utd Thread

The deal is so high because adidas get all the profits - Utd are only getting a fixed amount with no extras, which isn't how most kit deals are structured. So on the face of it Utd are getting more than double what Real Madrid get from adidas, but in reality the difference is nowhere near that great.

I think is correct but the announcement states a minimum of £750m over 10 years, so that means it must be able to go up I think.

Anyway, everyone excited to hear LvG's first press conference today?

This was also the case under Nike, they owned the giant Megastore built on the ground. Nearly all that revenue was there's.although United did get a share of the profits. Last season it was worth 9M ontop of the standard 25M shirt production deal. Does that represent a good deal for United or Nike? I'd suggest it started off well for United, when the deal was struck 13 years ago. Looking at the amount adidas are now paying I'd suggest the nine million must have only been a tiny percentage of the profit Nike took and why the new deal is over double the old.

What I do know is United led the way on commercial deals prior to the adidas announcement. That particular arm is the envy of world football. Barca and Madrid had a higher turnover the past years though if United could organise it's own TV deals it would probably be well ahead of either. The renewed Premiership deal and new kit will bring closer parity for sure. Domestically the club was miles ahead of everybody and the new deal only strengthens that.

Ultimately though it's rather irrelevant beyond willy waving comparing Utd to Madrid. Due to many factors United will never be able to compete with either Spanish side for the signing of a top foreign player. Be it weather and culture, or simply the guy has dreamt of playing for Madrid all his life there really is no competition for signings.

Well, that and the money in the past went on interest, bond buybacks and "attractive" share offerings with it set to go on dividends and bonuses in the future whereas Madrid seemingly buy 80M players every other season.

Looking forward to hearing King Louis and massively excited for the new season.

It's been building since Moyes got the boot, but it's like the world has realigned and all is well now. It started with Moyes out, then slips and Demba Ba being topped off by Dwight Gayle. We appointed a proper manager and signed a central midfielder!

Everybody has bigged the manager up due to his World Cup but what I took from it was he'll bring many things. Firstly, a real team desire and attitude that was absent last year. We have a manager who won't take any messing from star names, who is brave enough to do what the hell he wants. Be it the constant formation changes, the subbing of RVP, playing Kuyt as a FB or fucking about with the oppositions heads on a penalty shoot out he isn't afraid to make decisions.

The total opposite to Mr I want to make it hard for the opposition. Mr I won't sub Persie for fear of the fans reaction. Mr I hope things will change. That has gone and we have a real guy in charge. Gone is the downbeat playing down of expectations and the lip service paid to trying hard and making it difficult for the opponents.

That he's won everything, has a history of managing big names, bringing players though and getting the best from more limited players has left me so excited for the new season. Totally different to last time and it's genuinely the most excited I've been for United for years.

So how does the Kroos to Real for £20m work out. We were surely going to offer much more than that, is it simply a case of Kroos saying he only wants to go to Madrid and they got to fork out fuck all for one of the worlds best midfielders? Surely Bayern would want more from that deal?

Exactly that bowser. I wasn't keen on Moyes from the off, mainly due to seeing his negative tactics with Everton over the years. But with van Gaal, I think we've got a manager with the pedigree and personality we need to steer us back to glory.

Winning the league in his first season might be a push, but I'm pretty confident we'll be back in the Champions League this time next year, and it'll be an entertaining season no matter the outcome.

He only had 1 year left on his contract.

He only had 1 year left on his contract.

But still, couldn't Bayern have played hard ball with him and Real knowing that another club (us) would potentially want to pay much more? I know they'd be risking losing him for nothing in a year, but it would also unsettle him and he might just go to that other team if his only other option was to stay at Bayern who have pissed him off by blocking his Real move. Would have at least made Real up their offer. It's just scandalous he went for so cheap.

With 1 year on his contract teams aren't going to pay much more than the £20m really. Not to mention the players doesn't HAVE to leave he could have just ran his contract down and gone for nothing. Why would Bayern do that and miss out on a potential £20m just in the hope they might get a few more million.

Anyway, Carrick being out isn't the best start to the pre season (10 weeks apparently). If it is indeed a serious injury then another midfielder is a necessity really.

Why would Man Utd pay much more than that? Also player power is so high these days, if he wants to go to Real and not Man Utd then thats what will happen, as long as the free is reasonable (which I think it is for a player with 1yr left on his contract). If he's dead set on going Real then its a simple case of them going "Ok fair enough if you don't want £20m now, we'll have him for free next summer".

Carrick is out for about 12 weeks, but sounds like it could be more. So out midfield situation is (assuming Van Gaal can get more out of some players than they offered last season):

No issues - Fellaini, Cleverley, Herrera

Fitness issues - Fletcher, Carrick

Let's not go there - Anderson

We should go ask Madrid if they're still using Khedira.

Why would they sell now of all times? They're getting record revenues in so it makes absolutely no sense.

If their intention was to grow the business and sell it on at a profit, they would want to do that when the balance sheet looks at its best. If a company is making higher profits, it is more valuable. However even as I'm typing this, I realise that an even better time would be when we are back in the champions league. They haven't reinvested much of the profits back into the business, instead using it to prop up their other ventures, or servicing the debt. The growth has instead come from maximising the use of the United brand. Trying to increase profits by optimising existing revenue sources is fairly typical strategy when trying to turn a business over for a profit in the short to medium term.

So we've basically got one midfielder.

I'm also not sure about waiting 3 or 4 weeks for him to assess our current squad before deciding who we need to ship out and who we should get in. Won't that be leaving things a bit late?

He has to say he'll be giving players a chance really though, clean slate an all. He also said he's seen the players play before now, but not seen them the play the way he wants them to in his philosophy. If the players can adapt and fit in then they'll be fine, if not then expect changes. I think thats fair.

That being said, I'd still be surprised if we don't get any more central midfielders in now. Pretty thin in that department, more so with Carricks injury.

(Un ignored now for the new season Jon, lets see if we can play nice :))

It will be a too late (ideally) for new signings really but not so much for any outgoing players who are likely to be lower value players who can be easily shipped out. Looking forward to the next couple of weeks either way!

'Lets not go there' really made me laugh :D

Good lad. Even if we don't see eye to eye on occasion, I'd rather us all stick together in here. We do all want the same thing for the club at the end of the day, and I reckon with King Louis in charge, we're in for an entertaining season that we all should be part of.

Never mind that. It looks like we've finally managed to replace the Tevez/Park/Evra bromance with Shaw & Smalling

How dare you suggest Shaw and Smalling as a replacement for those guys. Not even in the same league of footballer friendships.
