£31.5m? Sweet cha ching.

Let's spend it all on that Mexican keeper, half the Costa Rica team and your man from Ecuador who scored a couple!

Crazy money for a teenage fullback but if he fufils his potential and stays at United for the next 10 years it'll be seen as good business.

Also, two centre backs? Is that due to the injury proneness of Jones and Evans or because you don't rate them? I think one other central defender, with experience if possible would be wise. I don't see an need for two though.

Varela? I haven't seen anything of him in the reserves but he could be alright - we'll have to see. I know he played a few times so if he and Keane come in we should be okay, leaving space to sign someone else. Sadly we offered a new contract to Valencia so right-wing isn't up for grabs I suppose, Nani sticking around with his fairly recent deal also.

So now we have

GK

De Gea

Lindegaard

Amos?

RB

Rafael

LB

Shaw

Evra

CB

Evans

Smalling

Jones

CM

Herrera

Carrick

Fellaini

Anderson

Cleverly

Fletcher

AM/Wingers

Nani

Young

Valencia

Mata

Januzaj

Kagawa

FW

Van Persie

Rooney

Welbeck

Hernandez

Rooney and Welbeck will presumably play more as AM/Wingers and Smalling, Jones and Valencia (lol) can all cover at RB when desperate. Plus we have young players like of Powell, Henriquez, Keane, Zaha, Varela and Bebe! Back from loan and potentially being able to step up into the first team, although I don't really know how good any of those actually are.

I think most of us are in agreement that we need at least 1 CB and proper RB cover for Rafael.

Seems like a pretty big squad at the moment for a team who won't have the extra European games to play. Ideally I'd quite like to see another CM brought in and then Fellaini, Anderson, Cleverly, Fletcher (maybe), Nani, Young and Valencia all moved on but I can't see us selling that many players all in one go.

Luke Shaw confirmed.. interesting! I guess him and Evra will be constantly rotated? Would be strange to sign Shaw fo so much then just to sideline him City-style.

Next: two centre backs.

He can be rotated in when the Carling Cup games are on. ;)

re: spork's 'who would you like to see go' post.

Everything I've read about Fletcher suggests his surgery was a genuine success, and it was niggling injuries (unsurprising after such a long time out) that meant he didn't play more often last season. When he did play, he looked good, better than our other midfield options anyway. I hope he can get a good pre-season in an make a better contribution this season. I wouldn't want to see him playing anywhere else, and I think the club should stick by him anyway, at least for the year he has left on his contract. If he isn't playing regular football by then, he can decide for himself if he wants to play elsewhere, or maybe move into coaching (he's already had a role with the reserves).

I'd be wary of moving any central midfielders on tbh (besides Anderson) as we are so thin there. Same for Young and Nani, unless we sign a winger / wide forward. Some people in the press seem to think we'll be making 4 / 5 big signings this summer, but this is already the best summer we've had in a while. If we sign a centreback for cover and go for Strootman in January, I would be very contented. Would mean we wouldn't be trying to integrate loads of new signings, and means Van Gaal will get a chance to evaluate what we already have (some players certainly can't continue to play as badly as they did under Moyes).

Insane price for Shaw. The Swans Left Back had a pretty much identical season to Shaw in terms of key stats and Spurs have apparently bid £8m for him. Davies is 21 and had a much better first season in the Prem than Shaw and whilst he was below par last season he was still very good

English player tax baffles me

Young and Nani are disposable, we have Januzaj, Valencia, Zaha and Mata who have been used in those positions, Rooney can also play there.

Get rid, along with Anderson - we have Carrick, Cleverley, Herrera and Fletcher all vying for the same spot as it is.

I'm not sure if Zaha will play again for us. Valencia I think will be used more as a midfielder / fullback / utility man by Van Gaal, he's neither creative enough nor enough of a goal threat to play in attack. Sooo... that would leave Januzaj / Kagawa as the only attackers with much in the way of pace. Say what you will about Young and Nani, but they are both quick and they can both score. I think we will still need them, even if only as squad players.

Especially given Welsh players count towards the homegrown quota as well!

It's not that hard to see why 'English' players have a premium. Part of it isn't really being English but being a PL player which should mean a player settles in very quickly and the other side is that English (or British) players don't tend to leave the top clubs when they get there. The price for Shaw is no more mental that what United paid for Ferdinand 10 (or so) years ago which in hindsight was excellent value. On the flip side it could be a very expensive mistake but that is the risk you take with any transfer.

Well I think thats the point isn't it. You don't take that risk with any transfer, only ones that are very expensive.

But United are almost up against it in the transfer market, other teams know they are rich, know they need to make big improvements from last season and also don't have the "Champions League/certain league challenger" advantage since last season. So you probably didn't have much choice. But at Man U he's got every chance to succeed.

Whilst all the things may lead to Shaw being a fabulous player, he's still very raw and inexperienced. Contrast that to Ferdinand, who was already a very experienced and proven Premier League player by the time you guys bought him, with over 200 league games under his belt and an established international. I don't think they are comparable situations at all.
