Apparently we have agreed terms in principle with Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal. Just need to agree a price with the Gunners. Hmmm... on one hand, its a signing of an experienced Premier League CB with european experience. On the hand, its another injury prone CB to go along with the ones we already have. At least it's a signing though! :)

Vermaelen is a weird signing. he was terrible last year, his positioning is awful, he leaves all kind of space behind by charging forward, either with the ball or into tackles in areas he shouldn't be in. then again, he was excellent the year before, and he seems to have a good attitude. plus, he's cheap. is this another example of our leech owners pushing the cheap, crap option over spending 20-30m on the quality of player we actually need?

the fact that we appear to be going for Blind too suggests to me that we are refusing to pay what Saints want for Luke Shaw. i don't know much about Blind. he played well for the Netherlands the other night. Shaw's excellent though, a real future star.

wasn't this supposed to be a transfer window where money was no object, and we recognised the need to compete with the likes of Chelsea and City on spending terms in order to get ourselves back up towards their level on the pitch. we seem to be going for second tier players again, "bargain" hunting.

god i'm negative!

I posted this in the Arsenal thread when we were linked with Daley Blind a while back. http://goonersphere.com/team-lineup/bergkamp-flick/5765-in-the-land-of-the-blind-daley-is-king

I know Wenger is a fan but I don't think he'll move for him. I suspect he's going try and wring another season out of Arteta.

As for Vermaelen...um. Evans plays LCB doesn't he? So you're switching Evans to RCB to accomodate him, or playing him with Jones/Smalling which would actually be hilarious. Please buy him.

You're right, Jones and Vermaelon together would be something to see. Both flying forward to snuff out some "danger" leaving a bewildered striker in behind them, probably being played onside by Evra.

Blind is still a weird one. Would we be buying him as a fullback, a midfielder, or a utility fill-in man? The new John O'Shea? LVG plays him at LB but that article says his best position is CDM.

He's playing as a wing back though, different role to a full back in a four. I posted yesterday about how Lichsteiner seemed to be struggling with the different positional requirements. Blind primarily plays CDM for Ajax, but maybe Van Gaal wants to switch to 3-5-2?

And also what about Rooney? If we went 4-3-3 then surely RVP would be the centre of the front 3, and we all know how much Rooney likes playing out on the left.... although I'm not convinced that's the sole problem with Rooney. He played out left for a season successfully when we had a front three of Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez.

I think Rooney would find it easier playing wide in a 4-3-3 compared to a 4-2-3-1. Also in that Ronaldo/Tevez/Rooney formation there was a fair bit of positional rotation IIRC.

Mata though I don't think really works wide in either formation.

There was an article the other day about Giggs recommending giving Kagawa and Mata starring roles - if you want RVP and Rooney on the pitch too, that's pretty much the only formation that'd work. They'll all drift wider at times and you'll have Januzaj on the bench if that's not enough. I don't really think you need massive amounts of width or pace for RVP though, you just need accurate passes.

Fellaini's a cunt. First game in this World Cup for Belgium and he scores a good header, just had another one saved and is putting in crosses, good passes, alll sorts. Where the fuck was all this for THE ENTIRE SEASON?!

Buttner clearly has a high opinion of himself.

http://www.football365.com/news/21554/9353245/Butt-I-m-Brilliant-Louis...

The Dutch full-back has spent the last two years at Old Trafford, having been snapped up as cover for the experienced Patrice Evra in August 2012.

He has had to make do with sporadic outings in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, making a total of 28 appearances.

It appears as though his situation is unlikely to change any time soon, with incoming coach van Gaal a man who has consistently overlooked him while in charge of the Netherlands national side.

Buttner is reluctant to spend another year sat in the shadows and believes he has made the right decision in agreeing to take on a new challenge in Russia – with a medical having already been arranged.

The 25-year-old told De Telegraaf: “Van Gaal never gave me the chance in the Dutch national team, despite being voted man of the match 14 times at Manchester United.

“Apparently, he is not very confident about me. So I think this is the right moment to leave.”

Buttner’s agent Alexander Bursac has echoed those sentiments, telling Voetbal International: “Dinamo Moscow have big plans. Staying at Manchester United was never an option this summer.

“In the last two years van Gaal has ignored him again and again. What kind of outlook is that for him?”

Should Buttner complete a switch to Dinamo, he will be joining a side that could only muster a fourth-place finish in 2013/14 and will have to make do with Europa League football next term.

The former Vitesse Arnhem defender is, however, remaining upbeat, adding: “I am convinced that the club can now challenge for the championship and then move into the Champions League.”
