The old Man Utd Thread

I was worried last week after van Gaal's appointment, that nothing was happening. I would have thought that a few swift buys as a statement of intent would have been priority.

I never thought I'd read we are considering offloading Mata. Especially with the amount of dead wood we've got at the club.

I'm hoping that a lot of what we're hearing is rumour, but my alarm bells are starting to ring. And we all know what happened last time I had one of my prophecies, don't we spork?

I kind of doubt this Mata to Barca thing is very likely. Where did the rumour come from? As far as I can tell it was first reported in the Daily Express, not exactly a reliable source. The article seems to be based on the assumption that Rooney will be Van Gaal's preferred number 10! Doubtful, as Van Gaal seems to know a bit about football. The same page has links that claim we're buying Falcao, and Tottenham are buying Cech.

I'm crossing my fingers, but it looks like summer transfer speculative nonsense.

Lots of stories about he was part of the success. None focussing on the £400 million debt the club is now saddled with.

Or the 700 million already spent servicing it to date in bond buybacks, interest repayments and PIK loans at 15%. Add the two amounts together and we could have spent like City or Madrid had we wanted.

If Glazer was part of the success, was he part of last season too? Of course a more competent manager would have done better than Moyes, but last season was a culmination of years of under investment and other issues all coming together due to the loss of the one guy holding it together.

I think the success of the last 10 years had very little to do with the owners and everything to do with a legendary, wizard of a manager who was able to motivate year after year players who'd already won everything yet hungered for more. Their job was to shut up and let Ferguson get on with it and not interfere like some owners do.

The parasites legacy is one of massive amounts squandered so rich people can become richer with the net result of Uniteds existence being put in danger. Throw in a divided fan base that is irreparably damaged and splintered, who are now treated solely as customers and I have no idea what the people you mention are talking about.

In fairness the owners have done wonders on the commercial front in terms of increasing revenue but that was only possible because Utd are Utd. The two other big deals, media and match day, have nothing to do with the owners unless you want to class compulsory league cup tickets as a positive. They chose United because of the untapped potential they saw for marketing, not because they're final geniuses who could have done the same at say Bolton or replicated the deals at pretty much any other English league club.

Yeah, it's astonishing that anyone could put a positive spin on what Malcolm Glazier did to United. Even all these years later it boggles the mind that what he did was even legal. How can you "buy" a football club and magically transfer the debt of the purchase onto the club itself? We went from being the richest club in the world into the most in debt in one go, without the club itself having anything to show for it. It's like Glazier took the club, without paying anything for it. The club had to pay for his purchase itself, a couple of times over if you factor in the interest and all the other shenanigans that have gone into servicing that black hole.

I don't care about the unwritten rule of not speaking I'll of the dead - he fucked the club badly, and his offspring still are. As Bowser says, it is pretty clear that Fergie was the only thing holding the situation together.

Ok spork, 5 days later, since my last post, and only two weeks until the World Cup kicks off, yet no concrete deals or even definitive rumours...

What's going on man? Am I being impatient? I'm sure feltmonkey advised me that we'd be making serious moves before the World Cup, but I don't see anything positive happening.

I'm still chilled though. There's no way we can fuck this up two summers running, right? RIGHT?

Considering no one else has bought any one I'm bit going to worry too much just yet.

When we end up giving Everton another 27 million for Fellaini on the last day of the window, that's when LVG out can begin!

It's not like anyone else has announced much either, unless you're super jealous over the signing of Rickie Lambert?

The transfer window isn't open. Many deals will wait until after the World Cup is finished (when we'll actually have a manager). Bloody hell Jon.

I think it's hard to see us solving all our problems in one window. I hope we get Strootman, Shaw and Reus, in terms of the big signings, and that is most of £100m right there. Ideally we would also get another midfielder, a creative / deep lying playmaker type. I'm not sure there is someone like that available though. We also need cover at right back and centre back. I think ultimately we will have to hope our new manager can get more out of the players we have, which I imagine will be the case.

Mate, I'm originally from Rochdale and they're my second team, so I'm obviously a huge fan of Lambert!

i think that's the plan, isn't it? there seems to be an intention to get any business done early. Kroos and Shaw would certainly be a good start, but i don't know what to believe at the moment. something about the Kroos reports makes me suspicious that there's nothing of substance behind it. i hope i'm wrong, as he seems to be a good player. if you look at the reports of "imminent" signings that are floating around, only the Shaw one seems really likely. everything else seems to be based on either a previous rumour from last january, or even last summer (Kroos, Vidal, Fabregas) or just a list of Dutch players Van Gaal is apparently bringing with him. i really hope we're not going to sign Robben, by the way. i don't think i could ever warm to him. it'd be like us signing Darth Vader, Joseph Fritzl, or Luis Saurez.

Just to bring this up again... Well, it seems like the intention to get any business done early is either well and truly out of the window because we've hit massive stumbling blocks or it was never the intention in the first place.

I'm hoping it's the latter and things are going to move quickly once the World Cup is over.

Even the gossip columns have gone quiet lately though.

Please don't let it turn out to be a season like last.

In all seriousness though, having heard Van Persie talk up his excellent working relationship with Van Gaal, it was very exciting to see it bear fruit against top-class opposition. Injuries and a lack of clear direction from Moyes may have caused his form to suffer for us, but he was enjoying his football yesterday.
