The old Man Utd Thread

Was there any good reason why he wasn't allowed a more dignified exit? Despite him coming across as a bit of a fool at times, he was an excellent player over a long period, both for you and England. Wonder where he'll go, if anywhere? He's got quite a few other interests, hasn't he - doesn't he own a record label?

The story is that Woodward informed him in the changing rooms after the Southampton game; a pretty shitty thing to do if it's true.

Ouch! Positive-PR is a thing that just exists outside of Old Trafford these days, it seems.

Anyway, Chris Woods still looks like he could be playing, doesn't he?

Neville I'm not fussed about leaving, Woods was doing a good job with De Gea though. But, assuming Van Gaal comes in (which I think is a matter of when rather than if at this point, given the sweeping changes), then he'd most likely bring Frans Hoek with him, whose coached Van Der Sar and Victor Valdes amongst others.

He's more commanding of his box now and he's catching it as well, a massive improvement. Only has a couple years left on his current deal though, so I'm hoping we tie him down. Given we've now lost two senior CBs, the best the club has seen IMO, we need to try and replace one or both. That won't come cheap.

I'd like to see Rene back in the fold. Despite his shortcomings as a manager, his coaching credentials cannot be argued with.

This is exactly the issue I have with Mignolet - he doesn't command the box well and prefers to punch even when he could easily catch. I've likened him to David James when he was at us - a great shot-stopper but just lacks an authority in the area, which does affect the defenders around him. I'm hoping he's following de Gea's path - shaky first season, much improved second.

I think the litmus test for keepers are against the likes of Stoke and West Ham, teams who will throw crosses into the box as a constant. Certainly, Dave getting a battering from Andy Carroll at West Ham in the 12/13 season was a turning point I think, he stood up well in that game and since then he's come on leaps and bounds.

Park Park wherever you may be....

He was one of my favourites. Total unsung hero. Never brilliant but always happy to just 'do a job'.

I know I'm probably being impatient but... I was kind of hoping they'd have announced a new manager by now, and maybe even signed a player. You'd think they'd try and get all their business done before the World Cup rollercoaster starts.

Y'know how we talk about Utd's shite title defence, we'll have you seen what happened to Leeds Utd's title defence in the first premier league season? They finished 17th!

Ed Woodward, Executive Vice Chairman commented, We once again generated record revenues and EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) as all of our businesses delivered impressive year over year growth. This puts us in a healthy financial position to continue to invest in the squad. Everyone at the Club is working hard to ensure the team is back challenging for the title and trophies next season.

They will lose £35m from no Champions league next year. Not sure if that is just group stage qualification?

I should imagine that's the total amount should you reach the final.

..from wiki

Prize money[edit]

As of 2012–13, UEFA awards €2.1 million to each team in the play-off round. For reaching the group stage, UEFA awards a base fee of €8.6 million. A win in the group is awarded €1 million and a draw is worth €500,000. In addition, UEFA pays teams reaching the first knockout round €3.5 million, each quarter-finalist €3.9 million, €4.9 million for each semi-finalist, €6.5 million for the runners-up and €10.5 million for the winners.[55]

  • Playoffs: €2,100,000
  • Base fee for group stage: €8,600,000
  • Group match victory: €1,000,000
  • Group match draw: €500,000
  • Round of 16: €3,500,000
  • Quarter-finals: €3,900,000
  • Semi-finals: €4,900,000
  • Losing finalist: €6,500,000
  • Winning the Final: €10,500,000

A large part of the distributed revenue from the UEFA Champions League is linked to the "market pool", the distribution of which is determined by the value of the television market in each country. For the 2012–13 season, Juventus, who were eliminated in the quarter-finals, earned nearly €65.3 million in total, of which €20.5 million was prize money, compared with the €55.0 million earned by Bayern Munich, who won the tournament and were awarded €35.9 million in prize money.[56]
