The old Man Utd Thread

Spurs are already 3 up against Villa, so it seems regardless of whether we get back into this game, no Europa league for us! Could yet be a blessing in disguise, we won't need as big a squad next season, and could have a real clear out. I could see a number of players on big salaries go (Ferdinand, Evra, Hernandez, Young, Nani, Anderson) and we could sign three or four top quality players. Plus Van Gaal wouldn't have to rotate as much, and hopefully would therefore have an easier time finding his best XI. Moyes picked a different side every game and look how that turned out.

Yes, for his age he is absolutely ridiculous. His positioning and decision making, compared to Evra, would give us much more security at the back. I think he would be a slight step down from Evra in terms of his attacking contribution, but obviously could improve in that regard. He's English, a proven performer in the top flight, and has a long term contract so that seems about right.

Lovely goal by Mata yesterday. Peach of a free kick.

Still, season done with and can be forgotten with a new manager announced this week according to Giggs. Glad that we seem to be making real efforts to sort out deals early this time round, transfer deadline muppetry should be left to other clubs.

But I'd rather sign someone else for that money, someone we need in midfield or central defence.

I'd rather we sign him, the CB you mention and two CMs all in the same window. The club has the money to do this and has stated it will make several signings. For too long the club has been forced to make do and years of under investment have caught up. Evra has needed replacing for several seasons.

People quibble about the price tag and it's lots for a left back... I think he's one of the best around and it's not just potential, he's at that status right now. Is he better than what we have? Yes, vastly superior. Is he a quality player? Undoubtedly. Low balling proved so successful last year and in years prior to that, just pay what they want and get it sorted now.

The price seems about right considering his youth - he could sort out that position for us for the next ten years or more. He's a quality player.

The problem is, who's deciding which players we're buying? We have no manager. How can this rebuilding process be overseen by Woodward? Is Fergie choosing which players we go for? Is it David Moyes' shopping list? Or is Van Gaal being consulted before he's even signed a contract? It's a bit worrying.

I think Van Gaal is already manager and has been consulted, probably extensively and before they even sacked Moyes. All the talk was a clause in Moyes contract about the ability to sack with a limited payoff should we fail to reach the CL, it was surely no coincidence the Everton defeat which rubber stamped that outcome saw him sacked 48 hours later.

Giggs has said there'll be a decision this week, I think it's a formality he's the man. I also think it's a no brainer of a transfer and there isn't a manager who wouldn't want Shaw, nor could it be feasible that anybody can still rate Evra.

If it was a more contentious signing (say buying a new striker and the effect that'd have on established players) I'd understand the worry but it's such an obvious move.

Completely agree, it's a no brainer for United. Recent reports have all said that the club wants to get transfers finalised early so it will be good to see who else the club is going for, and who is leaving.

While the signing of Shaw, if indeed it does happen, is a no-brainer, I don't share your view that Van Gaal has been set in stone as our new manager for as long as you think. Yes, Moyes was always going to be sacked as soon as CL qualification was mathematically impossible, I don't think they would have been talking to another manager about signings. You might be letting your distaste for the upper echelons of the club colour your reading of the situation.

If indeed Van Gaal isn't already doing the job in some kind of clandestine way instead of actually preparing for the world cup, then we're sailing into tricky waters. It could end up in a situation where the new manager is handed a number of new signings he doesn't want, a Spurs-up waiting to happen. Shaw is okay because it's an obvious signing, but will the next one be Fabregas? Another body to clog up that already crowded number ten position?

Gutted for Carrick. Missed out at Euro 2012, too. Cleverley too, to a lesser extent. Played in the majority if the qualifiers and did a decent job. Obviously had a terrible season but there's a player in him somewhere. Hope van Gaal can bring it out of him.

I don't feel bad for Carrick I'm not sure he assisted one goal all season. Cleverley should be miles from the squad. I'd rather have Nolan, Noble, Huddlestone, Johnson god probably even Joey Barton...

Being reported tonight that Rio's contract won't be extended past 30 June. Expected to leave. Statement due apparently.

Sad to see him go, but he's given us great service and was certainly one of the all-time best centre-backs at United. Him, Van Der Sar and Vidic, a world-class partnership in their pomp.

"I have thought long and hard over the last few months about my future, and after 12 fantastic years playing, for what I regard as the best club in the world, I have decided the time is right for me to move on."

"I joined Man United in the hope of winning trophies, and never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined how successful we would be during my time here. There have been so many highlights, playing alongside some great players who have become good friends, winning my first Premier League title and also that fantastic night in Moscow are memories that I will cherish forever."

"Circumstances didn't allow for me to say goodbye the way I would have liked but I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my team-mates, staff, the club & the fans for an unbelievable 12 yrs that I’ll never forget."

Thanks for everything, Rio! a shame he didn't get to say goodbye at OT last week. Not for the first time either this season that the club have handled something pretty appallingly. :(

It's really the end of an era. :(
