The old Man Utd Thread

I thought we only looked properly threatening in the second half, possibly because Norwich were coming forward more. It was nice to see us countering with pace, taking risks with the ball and players gambling with their runs. A bit more like United, but where were these levels of effort and commitment all season?

It looked like Giggs was wearing the same getup the players sometimes wear for media appearances. Looked a bit naff tbh, he might as well have been wearing a tracksuit. Perhaps he's contractually obliged to wear it as he's still technically a player?

He must own his own suits though. I was hoping to see something a bit more stylish. Fergie could get away with it because he's 70 and men of that generation don't get judged much on their dress sense anyway. But Giggs is up against this lot:

Needs to go shopping.

I'm surprised the Liverpool fans didn't sponsor a "Giggs out" banner.

Lol as a Liverpool fan id love to see Giggs be your permanent manager next season. The guy is not ready for that job, he'd flounder.

Not an insult as it's a fucking difficult job.

I love the pose. And the fact his drink has just dropped out of his hand.

Just saw this, stats for our three central midfielders with the most league appearances this season.

If you added a column for 'goals' it would read 0 1 1. As dreadful as I knew our midfield had been this season, that really is a surprisingly pitiful attacking contribution.

I wonder what's going to happen with Fellaini. It's obvious he isn't good enough to play for us, and we'll never get anywhere near the ridiculous amount we paid for him. But do you think the board/new manager will be willing to offload him so soon?

The quicker we erase everything about Moyes, the better.

I think / hope Jon was referring to the style of play against the other sides in the top six, where we were somewhat pedestrian and appeared devoid of ideas.

Juan Mata is a definite one in the plus column. He has scored and created chances this season.

the Fellaini thing is weird. he looked a good player at Everton - good on the deck as well as in the air. for us he's looked unbelievably bad, possibly the worst i've ever seen in a United shirt!

Taibi & Prunier were pretty bad

yeah, pretty terrible, but both were shit over a short period of time. they played six games between them. oddly, Prunier did okay on his debut. i remember him hitting the bar. his second game was a disaster, of course. Taibi was man of the match on his debut against Liverpool, before the Southampton debacle. he went on to prove he was actually a pretty good keeper after he left us, but he couldn't cope with playing for United. perhaps if he'd stayed he might have recovered and been ok for us.

Fellaini has played a whole season, albeit one disrupted by injury and never looked better than intermittently competent. he's had games where he can't pass the ball four yards, and has committed a foul with every challenge he's gone in for. he's looked brainless in his positioning, and seems even to have lost the ability to head the ball. as i said, he was good at Everton. it's got to be psychological. perhaps he's a confidence player. if that's the case, he's unlikely to work as a squad player, as he would need to feel he was important to the team every time he played. the best thing for the club and the player might be for him to move on. like Moyes, he's a guy that just doesn't fit with the club.

Worse than David Bellion?

Or Anderson?!

Which reminds me, is someone going to buy Anderson this summer?

He does look worse than Anderson! At least he could come on and string some passes together, win back balls - even make some forward runs! His main problems are his fitness and terrible shooting. I'm not saying Anderson is good enough to stay, he's stayed at the club far longer than he should have, but Fellaini has been a whole next level of shite. Expensive shite!

As fun as the discussion about whether Fellaini is the worst United player ever is, I should probably backtrack a bit. I don't think he's actually the worst player I've seen wear the shirt. I don't think he's a bad player at all, in fact. He's just been very bad for us. He's put in two or three of the most inept performances I've seen from a United player. It's not mistakes that are the problem - anyone can make mistakes. It's the way he's sometimes appeared unable to do the most basic things.

Bellion was a mediocre striker that carried no real threat. Reasonable at a lower level but not good enough for a team looking to win the league. Anderson is a sad story really. He looked a genuine prospect at first, but a general inability to get properly fit has scuppered his career. I can't remember - was it a serious injury that kicked off his problems or has it always been a series of extended niggles with him?

Edit - I looked it up. Knee cruciate ligament injury. They've fucked many a career.

He had a broken leg before he joined us and had only played a few comeback games too IIRC. If you watch a video of him prior to the leg break he looked lighting quick so both injuries have caused problems by the looks of it.
