The old Man Utd Thread

He didn't look like he belonged in that sort of company.

Has this always been something with him, that he has games when he can't find a teammate with a pass? You maybe wouldn't have noticed it at Everton due to his role in the team. He was looking a bit better recently (apart from the City game) but if he's going to be THIS bad in the big games, I wonder if we should just accept that he's not good enough and get shot of him.

It's obvious he's going through a massive confidence crisis at the moment. He's fully aware of the criticism he's been receiving and he's probably full of self-doubt right now. A couple of goals and he could well start dominating in the air and looking as strong as an ox again. So many opportunities to get something happening last night which he would have eaten up at his best. Either that or we have another Torres/Carroll situation and he needs to move to restart.

As people have said Valencia actually came off worse off from the challenge with Boateng, saying he was nowhere near the ball is quite a stretch, probably a free kick, not a yellow card. I wouldn't say Rooney dived, but he did feign injury, which is nearly worse in my eyes. It was a free kick out and a late challenge from Schwiensteiger, not sure if it justified a second yellow but he shouldn't have taken that risk. He WAS nowhere near the ball.

Still can't fathom Welbeck's disallowed goal. He raised his foot barely above hip height. If that is a free out then UEFA/FIFA need to have some serious talks. No one was in danger. If he was maybe swinging at it with some force, and not just taking it down, MAYBE it was a foul. But a ridiculous decision as it stands. Welbeck trying to chip the modern day Schmeichel was another ridiculous decision. Idiot.

If Welbeck could finish he'd be absolutely amazing. He can do it just seems he makes the wrong decisions, when he has to rely on instinct he seems to do well, but give him time to think he'll end up doing what he did last night. It was good keeping by Neuer though, didn't go down etc

Yeah, if you play Hernandez then it's up front or nothing and his first touch (or any touch that isn't directed at goal) is often very poor. Overall Welbeck's hold up play and passing are considerably better and means he can be deployed wide, something you couldn't do in a million years with Hernandez. I would have liked to see him come on a bit sooner though as there was definitely space to be exploited.

Welbeck offers more in terms of his overall game I think; control, pace, hold-up play etc. Hernandez can finish, but often his first touch is terrible.

Hernandez is without a doubt quicker than welbeck.

So Van Persie, then?

Welbeck's basically Henry without the finishing. If he sorted that...

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Maybe Karl Henry, not Thierry Henry.

This made me chuckle.

Yeah, Hernandez is quicker sorry although it's of no use except when he's through on goal. Harsh on Van Persie, his first touch is generally excellent and has only looked poor this year due to him playing most of the games completely and utterly isolated.

Yeah but Van Persie in the past couple of years has just been a finisher. He hasn't really got much else to his game but amazing finishing.

You mean just this year? He was involved in a lot of build up play last year imo.

Nice to see us actually dominating a game! Kagawa, Chicharito, Januzaj are all quite direct players, which is proving a good foil for Mata as their presence is giving him a bit more space to work in, and he's really been able to show his class.
